Shane Carwin (8-0, 0-0 UFC) will make his UFC debut against Christian Wellisch (8-3, 2-1 UFC) at UFC 84 “Ill Will” on May 24th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The heavyweight bout will be part of the untelevised preliminary card.
The televised card for the pay-per-view event includes a main event lightweight championship bout between title-holder BJ Penn and former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk. Wanderlei Silva versus Keith Jardine, Wilson Gouveia versus Goran Reljic, Tito Ortiz versus Lyoto Machida, and Thiago Silva versus Antonio Mendes will also be featured on the pay-per-view broadcast.
Carwin is undefeated in his brief MMA career, which began in late-2005, and has done so in impressive fashion. He has yet to have a fight enter the second round, knocking out three of his opponents and submitting the remaining five. In his last fight he scored a one-minute, forty-one-second TKO victory over Sherman Pendergarst at Ring of Fire 31 in late-December.
Wellisch started his career with a mild, 6-3 professional MMA record including a UFC-debut loss to Cheick Kongo at UFC 62 in late-2006. Following the loss, Wellisch secured back-to-back victories inside the octagon over Anthony Perosh and Scott Junk.
