Rua Injures Knee, Withdraws From Main Event Bout Against Liddell [UFC 85]

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Mar 5, 2008 at 12:16 am ET73 Comments

UFC.com’s Thomas Gerbasi on Tuesday announced that Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, the long-rumored main event opponent for Chuck Liddell at UFC 85 in London, has been forced to withdraw from the bout after suffering a ruptured ACL.

Here’s an excerpt from the UFC.com announcement:

Scheduled to make his return to the Octagon this June against Chuck Liddell at UFC 85 in London, light heavyweight star Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has instead been forced to withdraw from the bout due to a ruptured ACL in his left knee, the same injury he had surgery on to repair last October after his UFC 76 fight with Forrest Griffin.

Surgery on the injured knee will be scheduled shortly, and there is no word on when Rua will be cleared to return to the Octagon.

A replacement opponent for Liddell is expected to be announced shortly.

  • gary says:

Thiago Silva should be the fighter that fights Chuck Liddell next.I love Chuck but I am sorry to say THiago is the real deal, he will be the champ in the 205lb division. He is going to tear up that division and nobody is going to stop him.

  • johnboy says:

im rlt pissed off now thats a fight i wanted to see!! cant think of any1 to face chuck now as im aware all the top 10 LHW have matches sorted out already?

mmmmm silva could step up and fight him??

  • jpm says:

your telling me johnboy, pissed off is the understatement of the year, this time last week I thought we’d be seeing shogan, liddell, lesnar & couldn’t wait to see who else. A few days later (after shelling out over £300 for a ticket)i’m left wondering, I just hope dana finds some mouth watering matchups for us to see. I went to manchester for ufc70 & london for ufc75 & the fight cards were amazing & so was the atmosphere but when I went to Newcastle for ufc80 the card was a little dull (BJ vs Joe Daddy aside of course) & so was the vibe, I hope ufc85 isn’t the same.

  • johnboy says:

im still guna get tickets to this event because the iceman will be there but like u say jpm hope dana makes some exciting fights

  • Rand O says:

Totally agree I am really pissed.

I was looking fowards to 2 great fights and now we don’t have any.

The tickets are too overpriced…£300 – is crazy.

Who is there for Lidell to fight??
Why did they take Lesnar away from this fight.

ALL ufc cards need 2 headlining fights….otherwise this is what happens. What is Lidell get’s injured next.

  • Patrick Engeleiter- Patrick21 says:

the card will be exciting if you replace michael bisbing. I have never seen a more boring fighter than bisbing and if he ever fights anyone with talent he will get his ass handed to him. He lost that fight with Hamill and got the home judges decision. He never won that fight.

  • scott says:

I dunno who is gonna replace shogun. Possibly silva Moves up or they scratch tito vs. machida And have tito’s Last Fight against chuck.

  • johnboy says:

patrick get over the hamill fight bisping is a quality fighter whos been fighting at the wrong weight with only 1 loss so that proves hes got class, and in my opinion he beat rashard we will see alot more knockouts now the count is at 185.

  • jpm says:

Bisping isn’t fighting in London Patrick as he’s on he card at ufc83, you wouldn’t happen to be a bitter yank would you? With the 10 point must system a fighter could easily win a fight after edging 2 very close rounds even if he has his “ass handed to him” in the other. Move on pal, the Bisping/Hamill fight was over 6 months ago, everybody including yourself is entitled to their own opinion but opinion is that yours is heavily biased. He did win that fight, the 3 judges said so!!!!

  • Foz says:

It should be interesting to see who ends up fighting the Iceman. To johnboy’s initial point, who is left that is worthy of a Headline fight against him?

  • Dale says:

I say give Henderson a shot. Although, Dana babies Chuck…so this won’t happen. Henderson would present some issues for Chuck. Hendo – hasn’t been knocked out vs. Chuck (although I don’t know how I could see this fight helping Chuck. What do you guys think??

  • johnboy says:

dale you coulda hit the nail on the head with that it would be a great fight! dana wants dan at 185 tho so dont no if he would make this match i cant think of any1 else, come on people lets here what u are thinking

  • DrBdan says:

“Although, Dana babies Chuck…so this won’t happen. ”

How does Dana baby Chuck? His last 3 fights were Rampage, Jardine and Wanderlei. The only “easy” fight of those could be Jardine, which wasn’t a cakewalk.

I do agree though that Henderson would be a tough match-up as he has never been KO’ed. I also think he might have the wrestling/clinch ability to take Chuck down and do some damage. Actually, for that reason I think it would be a good fight.

  • Timosh says:

If Rua is out…Why don’t give the fans what they want to see.Put Lidell and Rampage back in the cage,I mean Randy isn’t fighting till late in the fall anyways.Make it a non title fight,Iam sure all chicks is to fight like everyone see him do agaisnt Wand.If thats no good Get Vera to drop down. That would be an war as well.

  • The Apple says:

Firstly to Patrick, out of the 3 judges only 1 of them was British! And how can you not think Rashad is a talented fighter, unless your watching fights through Stevie Wonders glasses.

As much as the hendo vs chuck match up sounds good I doubt that they wanna keep using henderson like a jack in a box keep going up and down weight. A hendo vs rich franklin fight interests me as I think theyre styles could match up well.

With all the other top light heavyweights in the UFC already scheduled to fight why not look towards someone like Ricardo Arona

  • jpm says:

I completely stumped johnboy, perhaps they should set up weighing scales at the event & select an opponent on the night. Joking aside though I have no clue whatsoever of who might step up.

  • Thumper says:

Considering everyone that is already committed to fight and injuries the name that jumps out is Rashad Evans. There is really no other quality competitor that the UFC can bring in for a main event fight.

  • johnboy says:

hey thumper rashad is fighting silva next so hes out of the picture, bring kimbo in to fight him haha

  • Jason N. says:

Here is a list I think should be considered -

Houston Alexander (even though he fights next month, that would still give him 2 months..I’m sure he wouldnt say no to the opportunity!)

Sokoudjou, Silva or Evans – I know all are on the 84 card but Dana needs a big name to replace Shogun, so I wouldnt be surprised if he asks one of them to step up – I know Rashad would – those reality guys, at times, seem hungrier to step up than others…

And finally…why not PAULO FILHO? He is fighting this month, so that will give him 3 months rest – I say its time to move him up to the big show…

  • FixXeR says:

Filho is overrated in my opinion so that would be awsome for Chucky to get an easy one!

  • Dale says:

Paulo Filho fights at 185 my friend, nice idea…but I’d like to see him with the weaker UFC middleweight division

  • zac says:

I like the Paulo Filho idea…how about Rich Franklin goes up? He obviously cant get passed Anderson Silva, so why not move to 205 and take on Chuck?

  • Foz says:

Doubt that they will have someone move up a weight class for Chuck to fight. Especially if the 185 class is kinda bare. I agree that Evans would probably definitely take the fight. Maybe another Liddell vs Babalu? Or the winner of Hamill vs. Bonnar?

  • DrBdan says:

In regards to Filho, I’ve read that Filho actually has trouble cutting to 185 and has made comments saying that he would be more comfortable at 205. I can’t see him fighting at 205 though, since he’s only 5′8 or 5′9. He would always have a reach disadvantage. They should bring him into the UFC in the middleweight division so we can see how good he really is. I don’t think he’s overrated, more untested in my eyes.

  • gary says:

Thiago Silva fighting Chuck or Thiago fighting Anderson Silva is a fight I would pay to see.

  • Sean says:

since tito only has one fight left they should scrap the tito machida fight and put machida against chuck since he still has a little longevity left in him..

  • MMAN says:

Franklin would get destroyed by Chuck! He is also fighting in april and wont have time to train and feel comfortable at 205. I would like to see Chuck and Thiago Silva. It makes sense, and its time for Thiago to put up or shut up being 11-0 in MMA. Good matchup!

  • gary says:

    Tito is washed up!!!

  • JAI says:

Liddell-vs-Henderson is probably the best high profile fight available. Unless they cancil Franklin’s fight with Lutter in April putting him in a fight with Liddell for June would be fair or feasible. Vero moving down is a possibility, but he has already scheduled to fight Werdum here shortly. Rampage is out of the question as Griffin is next in line for him. Neither Rashad Evans, Thiago Silva and/or Sokodjou have “official” fights lined up yet only “rumored” ones. This should free one of these guys up to fight Liddell. I’m sure Rashad would be game…I agree it’s time to test Thiago….and Sokodjou is a banger which would make for an interesting fight. Other than having Liddell fight Hendersen, bringing Arona in would be the best move at this point. This way the UFC doesn’t have to cancel or re-work any of their prior planned fights. Although I’m sure Chuck would more than welcome another shot at Jardine if it could somehow be worked out. Of course that would leave Wanderlei without an oponent. Machida deserves a shot at a big name as well. Doesn’t really get much bigger than Chuck Liddel. It could make for an interesting match up against to potent counter-punchers. how about this as an idea, Chuck Liddel-vs-Anderson Silva!! Anderson said he is willing to move up to 205lb if the UFC wanted him to in order to make a big fight. You all would have to agree that this would be HUGE!!!!!

  • JAI says:

I agree, Paulo Filho is very overated. He has “top of the food chain” type skills in Ju-Jit-Su, but his stand up is very suspect at best as well as the rest of his skill set. Sonnen was picking him apart during their first fight. There’s no way he would last against the Iceman. Plus he is just to darn short! He would get KO’d quick against Liddell.

  • gary says:

    Andersom Silva would destroy Chuck

  • johnboy says:

    HAHAHA good joke gary

  • YZFOXRACING says:

it would be a good figh i think but it won’t happen. dana wouldn’t just let him into LHW without an easy fight first to get the feel of what a punch feels like. but i would be interesting. i don’t see any fighters going down only because it’s harder to cut weight then it is to gain weight. and if anderson “THE SPYDER” sylva is such a bad ass he should move up. i can’t stand the guy. one because he is so good lol and 2 becuase he cant speak english or decent english

  • FixXeR says:

Anderson Silva would put up a good fight against chuck but he hasnt fought anyone with Chucks power before either. Hendo is a tough mofo but does not hit as hard as Chuck. I dont think to many if anyone hits harder than Chuck in the UFC. And his takedown defense is great….you wouldnt see Chuck getting choked out b silva. As unlikley as it would happen….I would really enjoy that matchup.

  • D says:

HE SHOULD FIGHT THE AFRICAN ASSASSIAN.

  • MMAN says:

Hendo Knocked out Silva in Pride a year ago, Chuck went three rounds with Silva and Said he gave him everything he had and still couldnt knock him out. Silva is in a class of his own. Chuck and Silva will most likely meet at some point since Silva has expressed intrest in fighting at 205.

  • D says:

Chuck should fight Rameau Sokoudjou “The African Assassin” thats the only dude i could see thats not fighting in the months to come.chuck would beat him tho

  • gary says:

Which Silva are you refering to?

  • D says:

thiago silva is already fighting rashad evans so he cant fight chuck but he is gonna drag evans

  • MMAN says:

I know that all seems confusing, the knock out by Hendo was Wanderlei Silva and the best pound for pound fighter in all of MMA is Anderson Silva.

  • gary says:

p4p Anderson yes but BJ is right there

  • MMAN says:

I could not agree more, Penn is my favorite fighter in all of MMA. All this talk of GSP vs Silva is nonsense and will never happen. GSP real concern should be what BJ decides to do when he woops up on Sherk. BJ has stated that he wants a GSP rematch and my money is on Penn.

  • gary says:

Bj is my favourite fighter also now that he is in the best shape of his life no one will stop him. There is alot of hype about Urijah Faber who is exciting fighter to watch. I would like to see BJ wipe him up and put him in a cab and send him home.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

BJ AND GSP WOULD BE AN AWSOME FIGHT. NO JOKE. AND THIS IS A BUNCH OF BULL ****. PEOPLE TALK LIKE IF GSP IS GONNA MOVE UP TO MW. IF ANYTHING SPIDER WILL DROP. WHICH I DOUBT. SYLVA IS GONNA STAY PUT. HE’S JUST GONNA ENJOY DOMINATING. BUT I CAN’T WAIT TILL SOMEONE KNOCKS HIM OUT I CAN’T STAND HIM

  • zac says:

my dream match would actually be Chuck vs. Mike Goldberg…man i hate that douchebag.

  • johnboy says:

well said yzfoxracing silva is a smug twat and i can’t wait till he gets knocked out, and if history tells us owt its that people who we rate as unstopable get knock out example arloski an gsp and u could put chuck in there too, cant wait for that moment to come i will have a big smile on my face :)

  • romez says:

when is wesley snipes and joe rogan gonna fight?

  • YZFOXRACING says:

OF COURSE I CAN’T STAND FIGHTERS WHO WALK AROUND LIKE BAD ASSES AND CAN’T SAY A WORD OF ENGLISH

  • johnboy says:

lol well put, ive been thinking about who chuck could fight now for a long time and the only solution i can come up with is let jardine fight chuck and move wandi down for the next shot at silva only person we will be upsetting there is jardine but hes not that good to be honest and int rly in a position to argue, plus if he beats chuck again i would say that he gets the next title shot, but people will say well if jardine beats wandi he will get a shot but chuck has just beaten him so a rematch makes perfect sence to me, wat u guys think of that maybe dana should get me on board ;)

  • YZFOXRACING says:

THAT ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE. WANDERLEI SYLVA SHOULD GO DOWN THAT WOULD BE TIGHT. BUT I’M FROM NEW MEXICO AND HOUR AWAY FROM JACKSON CAMP I GOTTA ROOT FOR JARDINE BUT CHUCK IS THE MAN. HE NEVER DOES THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE I THINK HE’S GONNA GET THE TITLE BACK. I CAN’T STAND RAMPAGE EITHER C**** LITTLE F*****. I WANT GRIFFIN TO WIN

  • Doug says:

Stephan Bonnar vs. Chuck Liddell. I would pay to see that fight.

  • belly says:

why is it people always hate the best?? anderson silva is best at the moment.he doesnt have to move out of his division to prove it hes beaten top guys already. i enjoy watching quality and thats what he is. everyone gets beat sometime and silva will as well but if he stays at mw its gonna take something special.

  • Jason N. says:

Ok, how about the winner of Brian Stann vs Doug Marshall move up to take on Chuck? I think that would be a good fight…they all are bangers…

My dream fight I would pay to see now is GSP vs Anderson Silva – I may be the only one who thinks GSP would win…but I have a feeling he would win.. besides that…maybe a Houston Alexander vs Chuck or maybe a Corture vs Rampage … but regardless, im not too worried – I know Dana wont disappoint us – he will find a good replacement for Shogun

  • MMAN says:

He doesnt have to move to another division to prove anything. There is no competition in the 185 weight class for him and he suggested the move to 205 if he got past Hendo. He did and now he will most likely fight in both divisions.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

I KNOW HE’S THE BEST IN THE DIVISION. I JUST LOVE TO SEE A FIGHT AND EVERY FIGHT WITH ANDERSON HER DOMINATES I HATE PAYING FOR **** WHEN HE ENDS IT RIGHT AWAY. BUT I JUST CAN’T SEEM TO MISS A UFC.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

I HAVEN’T HEARD ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THE WANDERLEI SYLVA VS KEITH JARDINE FIGHT. WHO’S GONNA… I THINK JARDING WITH ANOTHER BIG BIG UPSET…

  • Foz says:

I like the Goldberg vs Chuck Idea for the PPV. Maybe throw in a Rogan Vs. Mencia, too. Hell – I think (sorry I forgot your ID) got it right when they said that some of the matches are not officially set. Only the next few PPV’s are actually set. I forgot Bonnar got hurt, too. Chuck would destroy the Hamill-Botch winner…… I have no idea who to have him fight. Maybe a not-yet-signed fighter? Any other Chuck Vs. Non-UFC dream matches out there?

And why the hell is Ken Shamrock still listed on the UFC’s roster on their website? I thought he was planning to fight elsewhere..

  • MMAN says:

I am pulling for Wanderlei over Jardine. He needs this and if he can pull his game togeher he has Jardine beat. I can’t stand Jardine and look forward to a rematch with Chuckie

  • YZFOXRACING says:

SEE I LIKE KEITH I GUESS BECAUSE HE FIGHTS WITH GREG JACKSON CAMP AND I LIVE AN HOUR FROM THERE I THINK HE LOOKS INTEMIDATING.

  • MMAN says:

Lol. I thought the Jardine/Alexander looked like a prison fight! Jardine does have good skill, but I feel the outcome will be different when he meats with Chuck and forest again.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

OH YEAH OF COURSE CHUCK NEVER MAKES THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE AND FOREST AS DONE NOTHING BUT GET BETTER ALL AROUND.

  • MMAN says:

He does have a great chance with Silva but I just want to see that gut win again. Three losses in a row for him; Cro Cop, Hendo, and Chuck.

  • MMAN says:

But if you have to lose then you really coul not pick better fighters to do so against.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

YEAH I GUESS THATS TRUE. EVERYONE HERE IN NEW MEXICO HATES DIEGO SANCHEZ. HE LEFT JACKSONS CAMP AND HE JUST THINKS HE IS THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO NEW MEXICO. HE F***** EMBARRESED NEW MEXICO WITH THE WAY HE TRAINS LIKE HE DID IN THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER. WHAT A DORK

  • MMAN says:

Wow you must have talked to my girl cuz she hears the same comments at home all the time. It must be the Southwest mentality since I’m your neighbor to the south in Arizona.

  • Thumper says:

I say bring on Evans, even though ALves would be a better fight; let’s see how much heart Rashad really has and have Wilson Gouveia step in and fight Alves.

  • schmidty81 says:

every top dog is signed to fight in the upcoming months and will not have time to fight. Either the Liddell fight will get pushed to MN in August where it would open up a deeper list of guys that would be ready to face him…last I checked, it will take longer than 6 months to re-hab from a serious injury like Rua’s so dont look for this fight to happen for a while. Throw Kurt Angle to Chuck and lets see another “entertainment star” go down hard…Liddell and Griffin would be a fight I’d pay to see…I honestly cant see Chuck (although he’s my favorite) beating rampage…Go Forrest!!

  • Tim D. says:

why is it hard for everyone to give credit to a guy. seems weird two fighters get beat buy a guy and both are somehow flukes. by the way why should jardine rematch chuck, he should already be ranked ahead of chuck. his last 4 fights he has lost one chuck has lost 2. by the way how can you not respect a man thats been done the way he’s been done. he beat griffin and chuck yet he is behind both, and you guys keep saying he’s not that good or talk like he hasn’t beat anyone. if you talk him down then you also put down griffin and chuck since he did whip both.

  • Chuck says:

    Chuck VS Arlovski……..simple.

  • The Apple says:

Rashad Evans has been moved from the UFC 84 fight card to now fight Chuck Liddell in London, England on June the 7th.

This light heavyweight bout came together shortly after the UFC announced the injury to Shogun Rua. Evans was thought to have signed on a deal to fight Thiago Silva but the UFC has the power to change fights for their better at the drop of a hat and that was that.

A source close to Evans says the agreement has been made but the deal has not yet been signed by both fighters.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

THATS A GOOD FIGHT FOR RASHAD. BUT I DON’T SEE RASHAD WINNING THIS ONE. GO CHUCK.

  • schmidty81 says:

Liddell by KO…4 minutes or less
