Jon Fitch Next In Line For Welterweight Title Shot

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Mar 4, 2008 at 12:00 am ET26 Comments

UFC President Dana White revealed during the post-UFC 82 press conference that Jon Fitch is next in line for a welterweight title shot:

“[Jon Fitch] will fight anybody, anywhere. Realistically, he is in line, right now, for a title shot once the whole Serra-St-Pierre thing is figured out. He still took the fight tonight. He could have said ‘I’ll wait’. He’s a tough kid. He’s definitely paid his dues. He is in line for the title.”

Fitch became the second fighter in UFC history to win eight-straight fights in the Octagon with his win over Chris Wilson on Saturday night, trying Royce Gracie’s win streak from the early days of the promotion.

Matt Serra and Georges St. Pierre are set to fight on April 19th at UFC 83.

  • Here comes the pain says:

I think that St-Pierre will beat Serra but I think that people don;t give Serra the respect he deserves. He is a top welterweight and has fought the best and done well. For Matt Hughes to say that Serra isn;t even in the top 10, is direspectful to a guy who had wars with BJ penn, the heat parysian ..etc, won TUF comeback and then knocked out St-Pierre. Why doesn’t Hughes stay at the farm for a while and try to get that stick removed from his arse.

As for Fitch, keep aiming for that title shot because thats all your gonna get is a shot. St-Pierre is gonna rip you a new one and then down at the bottom you go head first.

I want St-pierre vs Silva and for all you people that think Silva would destroy him….think again and wakeup !

    About F-ing time!

  • FixXeR says:

Eh….Fitch’s last persormance was kinda weak but he definenlty deserves a title shot. I think GSP will tear him a new A-hole..but Fitch should get the shot. Haha, I love it how everyone already knows GSP will beat Serra.

  • JAI says:

GREAT NEWS!!! If anyone derserves a shot, it Jon Fitch! He has beaten all of the top contenders accept Koscheck and Parysian which he hasn’t faced as yet. Winning eight fights in a row since being in the UFC and I think like 14 or 15 fights in row in his MMA career is quite a feet and I am glad that UFC is giving him a shot. I hope GSP wins the fight against Serra, as I think a GSP-vs-Fitch would be the best possible match, plus I want to see Serra-vs-Hughes if Serra looses. Two great potential match ups!!!

  • Method Man says:

    What about Karo Parisyan?

  • J-Money says:

Karo will be pissed, but if still has to win his fight in April. He will probably end up fighting the title holder at the end of the year. Unless Dana and company feel that GSP assuming he is still the champion would take on Anderson Silva to determine the best P4P fighter in the UFC and probably the world.

  • belly says:

fitch does deserve his shot tho i agree with fixxer that if its gsp he fights hes gonna get hurt!!! but 8 wins in a row is an acheivement that deserves a shot.

  • Dale says:

What ABOUT Karo? He ducks fights

  • jim danniels says:

He don’t deserve a title shot. He needs a fight against a Parisyan or Koscheck first. Than a win could get him in with GSP. After GSP hopefully doesn’t kill Matt Serra, I think he’s more in line to fight BJ or give some added time to bulk up and fight Silva. Not Fitch. Remember, Fitch had trouble wrestling Wilson Saturday. GSP in his last two fights have made Kos & Hughes look like they never put wrestling shoes on before, there better wrestlers than Fitch.

  • Dale says:

I would like to see BJ and GSP again…especially now that it appears BJ may be in his groove again

  • Dummy says:

UFC screwed up ! Putting a guy like Fitch in a position to win 8 straight and there is still debate about him getting a shot……. STUPID !

Now hes being grouped in the same category as a legend like Gracie, common UFC … WAKEY WAKEY KEVIN BAKEY !!!!!

  • DrBdan says:

Fitch doesn’t need to fight Karo. Fitch can fight the winner of GSP/Serra and then the winner of that can fight Karo later in the year. The way it’s setup now the UFC has #1 contenders lined up for the rest of the year. If Fitch and Karo fought it would really eliminate one as a #1 contender. In the meantime some of the lower guys (Koscheck, Sanchez, Davis etc) can have a few fights and sort themselves out.

  • acemcnasty says:

Fitch sure asked for it and looks like he’s gonna get it. I’m almost sure GSP will wipe out Serra, so I’m stoked after Fitch called GSP out and saying “he’s scared to get KO’d” well us fans get to find out. If Fitch couldn’t handle Wilson on the ground he’s in serious trouble, GSP can take the fight anywhere and finish it. After those comments expect a sharper striking GSP the the one in Hughes 2. I can’t freakin wait.

  • acemcnasty says:

    *”handle Wilson’s striking”

Damn I’m so amped up I can’t think straight. I like Fitch but after that press conference he made quite a bold statement. I just don’t see an area Fitch can dominate GSP in. And why do so many fighters take shots at Pierre? The guys a class act man, jealousy maybe, IDK.

  • johnboy says:

fitch is the man about time he gets a shot, and im just going to upset people abit an say gsp isn’t going to have his own way with serra u guys r talking like serra is just guna lay there and take it **** u guys r in for a shock wen that time come, just remember it only takes one punch and look what happend last time, its going to be an intresting fight

  • sal says:

this guy beat no names and hes got a title shot thats its nuts he wouldnt last with peirre i bet diego now can beat him this guy sucks and hes gonna lose b list fighter for the rest of his career

  • pecker says:

I’m reading these posts and almost everyone has moved past the GSP v Serra fight….. oh, GSP is fighting Fitch…. no one gave him a shot last time, (he is holding the belt)I have to think that Serra knows he is expected to loose. If I was expected to loose I would want to prove everyone wrong and shock the world again.
Fitch has plenty of time to train for his next match up. I agree, as GSP would say “I am not impressed by your performance”.
I don’t think Karo will ever get a title shot. and Koscheck is no longer under contract. SIGN KOS! Besides is he going to fight his training/business partner?

  • theMAN says:

st. pierre will beat serra but serra deserves more respect than ppl give him. hes a natural 155 pounder for christs sake! and he cracks me up.
i think its about time fitch got title shot, but i doubt he can beat st. pierre, its not very likely.

  • Kris says:

Serra seems like a pretty decent guy to be honest. I think his actions specifically on TUF caused a lot of people to not like him plus some people just don’t like people from NY (don’t ask me why). I bumped into him at 87 and he seemed alright to me.

  • MMAN says:

GSP will beat Serra this time out. Fitch does deserve a title shot but he is out classed by GSP and will fall in the third round. As far as GSP fighting Silva; it will not happen. Silva will fight light heaveyweight and have that title sinched up by the end of the year. GSP is outstanding but is no match for Silva. Silva has no equal in MMA and is pound for pound the best fighter in the sport.

  • theoneandonly says:

Realistically, GSP is the closest p4p fighter to Silva.(weight wise) I dont see Silva really beating any of the top lhw… Rampage is the one I am really talking about. Silva will not fluster Rampage like Dan did… Just wont happen and Silva would all in all get knocked out by Rampage.

  • MMAN says:

WATCH THE PRIDE FIGHT WITH SHOGUN AND RAMPAGE. IF ANDERSON SILVA WERE TO FIGHT RAMPAGE WE WOULD SEE A SIMILAR OUTCOME. I KNOW JACKSON HAS EVOLVED SINCE THEN BUT HIS STYLE ISNT A GOOD MATCH FOR A GREAT MUA TAI FIGHTER.

  • Rush666 says:

“”"like serra is just gona lay there”"” Johnboy?? I guess you gave Serra a little to much credit, cause that is exactly what happened(although he was FORCED to “lay there”!) GSP has fought much better opposition then Fitch. End also GSP’s fight are usually a total domination… They seem to have the same kinda game plan, they like to take a fight to the ground and pound on there opponents..but id say with confidence that GSP’s superior in most if not all aspect of MMA!

  • Ian says:

People talk about Silva like he is god, Silva has had his ass handed to him in the past, he lost to Ryo chonan, dude, ryo chonan..ya it was a sick heel hook but he still lost…GSP vs Silva, I say they superfight at 178lbs….GSP is too good for Silva, all Silva is is a striker, GSP takes him down and pounds him out…think about it

  • Animal says:

Well considering GSP is goin to fight BJ after this, i wouldnt even sweat a matchup with Fitch. He hasnt fought top level guys yet and GSP is THE TOP LEVEL. He’s the most well rounded fighter in the world right now so i think it’ll be a tko in round one or two against fitch, a win against BJ and if they can choose a weight to meet at, a win against Anderson Silva if he can take him down fast and keep out of the clinch.
