Gilbert Yvel To Fight Josh Barnett at Affliction: Day of Reckoning
M-1 Global has announced that heavyweights Gilbert Yvel and Josh Barnett will fight at Affliction: Day of Reckoning on January 24th in Anaheim, California:
M-1 Global is pleased to announce that Gilbert Yvel, one of its top heavyweight competitors, has agreed to terms on a three-fight contract with Affliction Entertainment.
Yvel will make his Affliction debut against former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett on January 24 in Anaheim, California at the Honda Center during “Day of Reckoning,” to be presented by Affliction, M-1 Global, and Golden Boy Promotions.
Despite being veterans of the now-defunct PRIDE Fighting Championships in Japan, Yvel and Barnett have never fought before with “Day of Reckoning” serving as the first-ever meeting between the two.
Yvel, 33-12-1, who is known for the strong Muay Thai skills he developed while training in his home country of Holland, has been competing in mixed martial arts since 1997. Over the years, the veteran fighter has recorded notable victories over K-1 standout Semmy Schilt, current UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo, and former PRIDE and UFC veteran Tsuyoshi Kohsaka.
Yvel’s involvement serves to increase M-1’s contributions to the event, as M-1 contracted fighters Fedor Emelianenko and Kirill Sidelnikov are already scheduled to compete.
Fedor will be featured during the show’s main event when he defends his WAMMA heavyweight title against former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski.
Meanwhile, the 19-year old fighting prodigy Sidelnikov, nicknamed “Baby Fedor,” will be making his United States debut against former UFC heavyweight title challenger Paul Buentello in an undercard bout to be televised on HDNet.
Additionally, the M-1 Challenge broadcast team of play-by-play announcer Sean Wheelock and color commentator Jimmy Smith will be calling the action during Affliction’s pay-per-view telecast. Wheelock and Smith can be seen and heard in the U.S. every Friday at 8 p.m. ET during airings of the M-1 Challenge on HDNet.

he wont get CSAC clearance imo
Wow, 4 minutes and still no Justin?
Tough debut.

haha
hahaha. Sorry I was eating and then watching the end of The Unit from Sunday.
Noticed they mentioned “former UFC …” 5 times in that piece, think they’re trying to ride those coat tails a little bit?
as they all seem to do que no?
current UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo??? info a lil wrong…
True. That reminds me of a blog I wanted to write for my blog on here ,which I haven’t done much (read anything) with.
Which I just realized Kris disabled…drat.
You might have some trouble accessing your blog now anyways
I’m in the process of revamping them and hoping to have them back online over the weekend.
Kongo’s a current UFC heavyweight.
Sokoudjou was the one released. And Justin said Unit… ha ha ha… uhhh…
bye.
They said “former UFC…” four times and “current UFC…” once, mentioning the UFC a total of five times.
Is that better?
And yes I said Unit, but its a good show.
Justin check your e~mail
House > The Unit
Terrible matchmaking, a waste of Josh’s time to be fighting Yvel. I’d rather have seen Barnett fight Brett Rogers instead. Not that Rogers is some great matchup but Yvel is never going to be a top fighter and I don’t like the idea of a fighter as dirty as Yvel getting such a high profile fight.
Josh Barnett, gonna tko or submit him, as he sees fit. When he’s done putting on a show. Then, he will cut a promo on any mofo who thinks they can hang with him
actually gilbert isnt that bad of a fighter…..brett rogers vs josh barnett are u kidding me brett rogers needs a win over a top 25 hw and a top ten hw before he earns a fight against someone of the likes of barnett…now yvel isnt half the fighter he used to be but he has beaten good fighters…rogers hasnt! oh and the to the HOCKEY SUCKS guy….I happen to like hockey, its a great sport id watch nhl over the nba anyday…..college and high school basketball is more enjoyable than the nba
I don’t think Rogers was ready for Barnett, I think this will be a good fight.
Also, I’m on board with you gunslinger, hockey is a good sport, too bad the Hurricanes are idiots and just fired the coach that one the Stanley Cup and then rehired the coach they fired before hiring the guy they just fired.
They have black guys in Holland???
Too bad he’s not in the UFC…they’d have their quote filled.
Thanks for pointing that out, Al.
I am hoping for good memories and a lil sense of humor.
Haha
Affliction + M-1 Global + Golden Boy….man, they really want to gang up on the UFC, don’t they?
it doesnt matter who affliction bans together with they will never bring down the ufc….ya affliction can pay fighters but they dont have the marketability that the ufc does……Its kinda like how lebron james is gonna eventually leave the cavs for new york, not because he needs more money but because new york has more marketability for a player his caliber than cleveland does…..but back to a real sport(I hate the nba, love basketball hate nba)…Ya justin Im from ohio so im a blue jacket…Its kinda sad and hurts a little when i say that because columbus just sucks..but any ways dont expect affliction to be around much longer…..donald trump/oscar de lay hoya will both be off the band wagon once they see that day of reckoning wont even get half the ppv buys that affliction banned did!…..and wec being on that night will hurt it even more…..varner vs cerrone!
Well WEC won’t be on the same night, it’ll be on the following night but your point still stands.
I don’t like the matchup. I’d rather see Barnet fight Aleksander Emelianenko, but if that’s not possible, why choose Yvel? No disrespect to him, but as other said, I think it’s honestly a waste of talent.
