Werdum Wants To Fight For Affliction

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Nov 25, 2008

Fabricio WerdumAfter initially denying his widely-reported release from the UFC, former heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum is now acknowledging, in an interview with Tatame, that he is in fact a free agent and has his sights set on fighting for Affliction, Sengoku, or Dream:

“When I first heard the rumours, I didn’t know anything. I had four more fights left with them on my contract, which ran to 2010. But they demanded to renegotiate my exiting contract by cutting my pay in half,” said Werdum. “It’s a pity I would have liked to continue with the UFC but now we forge ahead. I still plan to go to the United States with my family. I’m open to negotiations with Affliction, Sengoku and Dream. I‘m a free agent now. One of the advantages of leaving the UFC is the freedom of contract, which allows fighters to work with more than one event without any problems. That’s very beneficial.

“There are several possibilities now including fighting in multiple organizations. Affliction, Sengoku and Dream are big events, but I think the possibility of fighting for Affliction in particular will give me the best chance to fight the best in the world, Fedor, in addition to (Andrei) Arlovski, Josh Barnett and several other big names …That would be a great opportunity for me.”

I know he lost his last fight but it still seems like an odd move.

  2. justin says:

It does seem like an odd move. I also think that Werdum will get pounded by the likes of Barnett, Fedor, and AA.

    Dietrich,
You what was that book you recommended to me a while back? I was looking for it yesterday and realized I had forgotten.

  3. dbiz says:

    And now, the correct translation….

“I relish the chance to show just how mediocre I am. I didn’t like winning anyway.”

  4. justin says:

    hahaha….

  5. DR.DOOM says:

He’s a good fighter …. it was a bad loss for him … but so was faber’s KO and he will be back .Not saying werdum is anywhere near Faber’s talent , but he does matchup with top fighters . Never heard about him ducking or refusing an opponent either

  6. Us And Chuck says:

Seems a foolish move by Dana but saying that he wasn’t the most exciting fighter and he did look fat LOL.
If he signs for Affliction please don’t do a rematch with Andrei Arlovski….please !

  7. nev-o says:

haha that is a joke if he thinks he is the best in the world….i dunno maybe he is still messed up from getting knocked out by dos santos

  8. Fr702 says:

Werdum getting cut is what it is, also him sayin that he wants to sign with Affliction, DREAM ect is not a suprise who else would he sign with M1?
He didn’t come into his last fight serious didn’t get in shape and got ko’d, its not like the guy is one of the all time greats in the HW division, he’s good when he wants to be imo

If he does sign with Affliction I would like to see him and Barnett fight perhaps he can become serious for that fight

  9. Us And Chuck says:

Talking of Affliction it seems that Margarito vs Shane The Real Sugar Mosley is a done deal on the same day of Day of Reckoning this seems very suicidal and from with in the company as well Dana must be laughing is arse off :)

  10. WM says:

I can’t figure out who the “several” other notable heavyweights are that Werdum is referring to.

  11. Mikew says:

I think the way Werdum lost and the obvious lack of conditioning sealed his fate. You cant cruise in any fights on skill without condition, boring fights dont sell.

  12. 2girls2cups says:

honestly i’m still a little surprised by this cuz imo, it seems like there’s plenty of other fighters who’ve messed up in the past. BJ used to be notorious for bad conditioning, gsp was mentally prepped when he fought serra, chris leben is constantly getting into trouble, rampage… Don’t get me wrong, I like all these guys and I’m glad their still in the UFC, just seems like a blatant use of favoritism cuz werdum was supposedly next in line for a title shot till he lost. 1 LOSS!!! and he’s out? seems a bit extreme, especially given the current status of the HW division. i get that he didn’t take the fight serious but c’mon, how many guys have we seen pull that move and come back better fighters for it?

  13. kouch says:

Let him go fight for the t-shirt guys……it won’t be long before he realizes it was not the best career move and he will still be on bad terms with the UFC/mother ship.

  14. ufcmanz says:

If Werdum is going to fight in Affliction, Thats a big step up in Heavy Weight opponents, he has to get in shape and take all his fights a little more seriousily. Interesting that the UFC is stacking Affliction with Heavy Weight Talent. Its also funny that the UFC has the confidence to put Couture Vs. Fedor / and Lesnar Vs. Couture , yet not Lesnar Vs. Fedor

  15. surfingk5 says:

No loss. He has worse love handles and man tits than my grandpa. These HWs need to change their attitudes.

  16. russiandoeboi says:

they got rid of him and big timmy because they expose lesnar

he beat overeem, gonzaga, aleks, vera,
    i think he’d beat most ufc top 10 HW’s

  17. Fr702 says:

Name the top ten UFC HW’s that Werdum would beat?

He is talented yes, and he has beaten some high calieber opponents (aleks AA) but its no big loss he wasn’t that entertaining to most and with the “big punchers” coming up into the division and him complaining about not getting his shot then getting ko’d he got cut time to go and fight the other Heavys in Affliction no biggie really

  18. Fr702 says:

Ok I’m on my CrackBerry and my screen name is coming up as my first name? Not FR702 just wondering why? Everything is set up to come up as FR702 yet my name comes up??? It may have some confusion with the other justin (what up pimpin) just stating this that’s all….

  19. bsbiz says:

The Gooner badge gives away your true identity… Have no fear…

  20. surfingk5 says:

fr, I think there are a couple people who’s names have changed for some reason.

Fortunately surfingk5’s identity has remained a priority secret which will allow me to continue my duties as an awesome super hero.

  21. bsbiz says:

    *cough*bullsh1t*cough*

  22. justin says:

Yeah, it seems that a lot of people’s real names have showed up…mine is showing with the capital J, rather than j like before…apparently there’s three of us on here.

  23. Fr702 says:

The Gunner badge does give it aways bsbiz no

Ehh soo be it I guess thx guys

  24. Jazzkok says:

Werdum is gay and HELLA overrated. I’m glad the UFC got rid of his @$$. He thought he was the top guy @ hw, especially after his “win” over vera, then BOOM!!!!! Here comes that young brazillian dude and makes my day.

  25. Dietrich says:

    Justin,
Just logged back on and saw your post… The Bjj book was Complete Guide to BJJ by Rodrigo Gracie…
Borders Central Raleigh…They also have Saulo’s new book and Anderson Silva’s but I had about 3 minutes to look through them so I can’t say too much about them. I like Victory Belt’s work but sometimes you just want a subject finished and it looks like they are planning on stringing out titles forever….
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
    Dietrich

  26. justin says:

    Dietrich,
Thanks for getting back to me about that. I’m out of town currently and was looking in a local B&N and they had Roylers book on submission grappling, and Helio/Rickson’s book on BJJ and BJ’s book on MMA, but I didn’t think any of them was it. I’m prolly gonna look in to that when I get back in town. Thanks.

  27. russiandoeboi says:

werdum was removed because he’d be too hard for brock
