Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver 2 Expected For WEC 38
Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber (21-2) is likely to rematch Jens Pulver (21-10-1) at WEC 38 on January 25th in San Diego, California.
Sources close to the fight have confirmed the likely matchup with MMAWeekly.com, though official agreements have not yet been signed for the bout.
Despite losing in convincing fashion to Mike Brown at WEC 36 earlier this month via first-round TKO, Faber was likely to receive an immediate opportunity to reclaim his title. However, torn rib cartilage has sidelined Brown from defending his newly-claimed title at the promotion’s January event and Faber will instead battle Pulver for the second time.
Faber and Pulver previously met at WEC 34 in June with Faber getting the best of the former UFC lightweight champion in an exciting five-round unanimous decision victory.
Prior to his loss to Brown, Faber had won 13-straight fights, including title defenses over notables Jeff Curran and Pulver. His loss at WEC 36 was just the second of his career, the other coming to notable lightweight Tyson Griffin back in 2005.
Pulver has lost four of his last five fights, though he’s faced some stiff competition in Faber, BJ Penn, Joe Lauzon, and Leonard Garcia. His lone victory over the span was a first-round submission of Cub Swanson in his WEC debut.
WEC 38 is headlined by a lightweight championship fight as WEC 155-pound title-holder Jamie Varner takes on challenger Donald Cerrone in the evening’s main event.

Update: Faber was originally in discussions to face Jose Aldo (12-1) at WEC 38 but will instead rematch Pulver after negotiations with Aldo fell apart in recent days.

i heard its gonna be pulver who fights faber on that card
Faber beat Pulver pretty easily in that fight, would like to see Faber fight Aldo and see if he is back on track. And going to go on a limb and say The Cowboy beats Varner.
@ Del, I just saw that on mmaweekly. They state that this fight fell through and Faber and Pulver both agreed to the rematch. I would love to see Lil Evil take it this time, but he got rocked by Garcia. I don’t see the benefit to Faber in taking a rematch against Pulver. Fight Aldo and if he gets the win, then the winner between Brown/Garcia.
Faber v Jens II would be great to see, perhaps another L for LiL Evil but their first fight was rather entertaining I enjoyed every moment of it… Aldo would be a good fight for Faber too
Cerrone will beat Varner imo
who gives a s**t.
what about L. Garcia.. dont he get a shot…
pulver is the most overrated fighter of all time
Really JohnBoy why might that be?
I agree Johnboy, when you have been a Pro MMA fighter for almost 10 years, have a Pro record of 22-10-1, was the 1st UFC lightweight champion, have beat some of the top names in MMA history, helped pave the road for where MMA is today, I would say he is overrated too.
I don’t think this is necessarily a smart move for Faber to fight Pulver now, but on the other hand their first meeting was one of the most profitable for the WEC, so another bout between them, if it brings in the same kind of ratings, would be good for every fighter in the WEC…and I’ll definitely enjoy watching it, so why not?
Willy D nicely done
Faber v LiL Evil I in Sac was quite enjoyable and it should be rather good again… Profitable as well ofcourse for WEC, its a dangerous propisition for both but so be it….
Does this put Garcia v Brown when he gets healthy?
pull ur tounge out of jens ass will u guys, the guy sucks ass, i dont understand why people like him so much, ok he was the 1st ever ufc lighweight champ, but there was no1 round at that time who’s become a legand in the sport, except for bj who yeah jens beat but please, thats was one of the biggest upsets in history, pulver has rode on that win his whole fighting career, and now we are seeing what hes really made of, pure an utter sh!t. he’s only 33 he should still be a good fighter but guess what, hes not. who did he beat in the wec yeah thats it a nobody, faber kicked his ass, garcia made him look like a b!tch and now they want him to fight faber again, jens is guna get hurt in this fight, he was ok back in day against nobodys but now theres some proper talent in the mma world he sucks and imo he always has.
top names willy d explain to me? bj penn thats all. joe daddy fair egnough but how old would he of been then 16/17 now he would get sh!t on, gomi beat him, jens is nothing but a keith jardine not exactley an legend in the sport, buts hes just done enuf to stay around
if jens loses i wonder if he’ll go down to bantamweight or retire
Justin I agree totally with you.
I like Pulver. I definetely don’t think this is a good move for him. But you have to respect the fact that if he’s offered a fight he takes it and puts on a show like a man.
Johnboy, relax lil fella. I’m not tryin to toss Lil Evil’s salad! Compared to most Jens has a great background story, great personality and entertaining fighter. He’s by no means in his prime and I don’t think he’ll win. He’s not got a fantastic record with big names. He’s also not super well rounded.
But, I guess us old guys gotta stick together man. At least he goes out there, prepares the best he can, sticks it out there and isn’t scared to get it chopped off. He gives the rest of us old guys the motivation to keep goin out there every night to get our asses kicked by you young lil fellas.
I think as long as he continues to take any fight any where the WEC will be more than happy to have him and I’d be more than happy to watch.
i don’t think anyone except brown on a good night can beat faber
i’m not even sure if he was in ufc if bj could beat faber
@ russiandoeboi…huh???
Bullsh1t,
Faber needs to face Garcia and the winner of that fight then gets the shot at Brown. They need to make THAT happen.
I agree Surfking5, gotta stick with the 30+ year old fighters. And at Johnboy, guessing you are just a UFC fan and really don’t watch or have watched other MMA organizations. Pulver, win, lose, or draw has fought some of the toughest around AT THAT TIME. You can’t say a guy that has been in MMA for 10 years sucks, hell I doubt you would last the first minute with any of the guys he has fought. And to name just a few:
Caol Uno
BJ Penn x2
Joe Stevenson
Joe Lauzon
Urijah Faber
Hayato Sakurai
Takanori Gomi
Duane Ludwig
Cub Swanson
Leonard Garcia
ide prob kill them all at once lol im not doubting hes a good fighter ok maybe it came out sightley wrong, all im saying is that imo he is overated, he’s not as good as all u guys make him out to be, but hey thats my opinion. lets look at his last 8 fights only 3 wins against guys ive never heared of, (kenji arai? cole escovedo? club swanson?) i dont no any of these guys. 4 losses out his last 5 fights! maybe hes getting old or maybe hes overated!
No worries johnboy, everyone has an opinion! Very true he has not done very well in his last few fights, but outside of Arai, all his opponents are tough and have a good record:
Arai: 13-12-3
Escovedo- 11-4
Lauzon- 17-4
Swanson- 12-2 (Would be a good match-up with Faber)
Faber- 21-2 (21-1 at the time of fight)
Garcia- 12-3
All these fights were over the age of 30, the guy is getting old and IMO, the Miletich camp just ain’t what it used to be. Pulver has never back down from a challenge and has fought for damn near every organization, so again IMO, I think he is damn good fighter and a MMA Hall of Famer.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! WTF
faber dominated pulver - it was an awesome fight but it’s a long shot foranyone but brown or penn at catch weight
Faber will destroy pulver just like last time. he wants and soon will get his belt back.
who would win in bj vs faber at catch weight?
It will be good to see jens fight. Just cuz he’s lost a few fights you can’t
Put him down. All the fighters he’s fought have been top notch fighters.
You can’t blam him for losing. Somebody has to lose. That doesn’t make him a bad
Fighter just a fighter that is on a losing streak. Don’t count him out just
yet.
russian,
Right now it would be tough for BJ at catch weight (say 150) but he would still win. At 155 no contest, BJ by domination.
