Danzig vs. Neer, Sadollah vs. Catone Added to UFC Fight Night 17

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Nov 24, 2008

Mac DanzigThe UFC Fight Night 17 card has begun to take shape as Mac Danzig vs. Josh Neer and Amir Sadollah vs. Nick Catone have been added to the lineup for the Spike TV-broadcast event which will take place at The Pearl at The Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Danzig, the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 6 welterweight tournament who has since dropped to the 155-pound lightweight division, opened his UFC career with back-to-back victories over Tommy Speer and Mark Bocek, but was defeated by Clay Guida at UFC Fight Night 15 in December. Neer, who holds a 3-3 record in the UFC, was also last in action at UFN 15, losing to Nate Diaz via split decision in the night’s main event.

Sadollah, the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 7 middleweight tournament, was originally slated to face Catone on the UFC 91 main card earlier this month but the bout was postponed due to a leg infection suffered by Sadollah. Prior to appearing on the reality series Sadollah had no professional experience, but advanced to the finals where he defeated CB Dollaway via first-round submission in his pro debut to claim the title. Catone is an undefeated Ring of Combat veteran who has earned first-round TKOs in his last three fights.

  3. Mikew says:

I like Amir’s game, he’s got the strikes for sure and a no quit attitude, exciting kid. I dont understand how so many fighters get leg infections, is it the conditions in training? How bad is it to end up in Hospital? Enlighten me please.

If the mats these guys roll on aren’t dried effectively and sanitized regularly, bacteria will grow. If a guy with a tiny cut or other surface flaw in the skin (matburn, cut, etc…) comes in contact with an infected area, you have an infection. The contact that these fighters have on a (more or less) daily basis makes transmission pretty easy. Depending on the specific strain of bacteria, it may or may not be a big deal. Sometimes, it is a simple skin infection, then other times it might be something like what Diego Sanchez (correct me if I’m wrong, someone) where he had a fight and the next day, had a giant bacterial hole in his leg.

In MMA, due to the close proximity of the fighters, any kind of infectious skin condition, be it bacterial or viral (as in the case of Paul Bradley) has to be taken seriously.

bsbiz- Thanks for the info, i just cant believe these infections are so prevalent, they should invent “MMA Mat Spray”, for safe unprotected grappling.
