M-1 Ready To Pit Fedor Against Lesnar

By: Eric Shapiro | Nov 19, 2008

Brock Lesnar UFC 91 Weigh-InYou just knew it would take half a second for people to start talking about Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar. Wasting little time, M-1 Vice President Jerry Millen has already issued a formal statement, which challenges the UFC yet again to co-promote a meeting between their boy Fedor and the newly crowned UFC heavyweight champion.

“While M-1 and Fedor remain interested in a match against Couture, we would also like to publicly state for the record that we would welcome a superfight between Fedor and Lesnar that would be held as a co-promoted event between the UFC, M-1, and Affliction Entertainment…

It is the position of M-1 that the UFC has adopted an anti-Fedor policy because multiple attempts to sign him have not been fruitful. For a company that has tried to market itself as the number one promotion in the world, they are unable to accept the fact that the number one fighter in the world does not reside on its roster of contracted fighters…

While Brock Lesnar is an accomplished athlete and a talented fighter, we do not consider him to be the number one heavyweight in the world. Until someone beats him, we strongly believe that Fedor should continue to be recognized as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. In a match between Fedor and Lesnar, we do not feel that at this stage Lesnar would be able to make it out of the first round.”

Gee M-1, thems fightin’ words. Seriously though, Jerry Millen’s statement is a lovely little read and all, but its nothing new if you’ve been following MMA since PRIDE collapsed and left Fedor up to the highest bidder. Of course M-1 would let Fedor fight Lesnar, it’s no big secret that Fedor would probably mop the floor with Lesnar at this stage in the game. Even if that weren’t the case, I can’t believe that other organizations haven’t learned by now that Dana White doesn’t do co-promotions . Ever. Call it pigheaded, call it a lousy business decision, but the man won’t budge. So issue all of the blood boilin’ statements you like M-1, but the only way any UFC fighter will ever fight Fedor is if they leave the UFC, and lord knows that’s not bloody likely to happen to any of the relevant heavyweights under contract.

I didn’t realize Fedor was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world…

  2. Purgatory Perez says:

All the potential hype that Fedor Vs. Couture has dwindled. Now that Couture lost & Fedor lost in Sambo. It can still happen BUT won’t have the HYPE or bulid up like it had before they BOTH lost this past weekend. In my opinion it’s still a dream fight. Both fighters are freakin awesome. It’s something that needs to happen sooner than freakin later!!
P.S. Fedor would make Lesnar his B!TX(H!!!

  3. Chris says:

Anything to see Lesnar get his undeserving ****in ass whooped.

  4. justin says:

I don’t think its necessarily a bad business decision to not co-promote. Especially since the last time Dana did anything resembling that, his golden boy (at that time) got beat by Rampage in the semi-finals of the Pride GP.

  5. bsbiz says:

Yeah, he beat his meat for the title last year.

And broke his hand doing it.

  6. Eye-Rhyme says:

man…brock would have his hands full!
i would hope brock would destroy fedor…just because i am a huge ufc fan and im going to back their product!
this fight would rake in some mean feria!
would they be able to arrange this fight in the ufc???
or would it have to be elsewhere???

  7. fixxxer says:

Actually Eric…..The UFC indeed does have the number one fighter in the world. :)

I would still rather see Coture vs Fedor. Fedor would man handle Lesnar.

  8. bsbiz says:

    Eye:

would they be able to arrange this fight in the ufc???
or would it have to be elsewhere???

It wouldn’t happen in the UFC. Due to Dana’s stubbornness or unwillingness to co-promote (as Shapiro pointed out), it would probably only happen over his cold, dead body as long as Lesnar is under contract to the UFC.

  9. Eye-Rhyme says:

    bsbiz…

    thanks man!
    so basically this all hype?
man fedor needs to come over…i do not see why they are not able to negotiate a deal? can anyone speak on that??

    • rifraf says:

Fedor does not want to be owned by Dana White. His current agrement with Affliction still allows him to fight sambo in Russia. UFC would not allow that. UFC could not come to an agreement with Fedor , so they are promoting the hell out of Brock Lesnar.Lets all hope they can co-promote a fight or hope that Affliction becomes as big and popular as UFC

  10. Eric Shapiro says:

FixXeR- I never said they didn’t.

  11. Ryan in NY says:

Seems kind of cute that Fedor and M-1 call out two UFC fighters in one announcement. I personally see this as an admission that they realize Fedor’s legacy is tainted because he’s not fighting in the UFC (or high quality fighters… you can debate amongst yourself if high quality fighters = UFC). Lesnar’s been king for … 3 days before they’re humping his leg???

I see Dana responding with “If you want this fight to happen… sign a UFC contract or suck it.”. It’s not like the UFC loses anything if this fight doesn’t happen.

Personally I’m tired of Fedor. He’s the fat kid on the sideline bragging about how he can beat everyone in the game. Get in there and prove it or shut up and stop sending out these lame announcements.

  12. T3chn3tnium says:

    talks cheap..

  13. Eye-Rhyme says:

    ryan!
i agree man…that kid on the sideline comment hit it on the spot!

  14. Ryan in NY says:

I don’t think it has anything to do with Dana White being stubborn either (not saying he isn’t). I just think it’s a good business decision. He has some serious negotiating leverage now that Pride is dead and he’s not going to drop his pants just cuz Fedor’s camp sends out this letter.

  15. dbiz says:

Fedor won’t come over because he wants a million a fight plus the right to fight anywhere else he wants. At least that was the last sticking point I heard. He hates exclusive contracts.

  16. bsbiz says:

This sounds like M-1 trying to needle Dana and the UFC. M-1 exists for the sole purpose of promoting Fedor and Affliction is paying him more money than anyone else. He knows he can make more by fighting with Affliction than Dana is offering, plus he can keep fighting sambo. Dana wouldn’t let him do that either. It’s a lot of hot air until 1) Fedor signs with the UFC or 2) Lesnar is no longer under contract. Your guess is as good as mine which one will happen first.

  17. Tim says:

A lot of Dana White nuthuggers I see. Fedor not going to the UFC does not “taint” his legace. UFC’s current heavyweight champion is Noguiera, who Fedor beat TWICE. Noguiera will also go on to beat Mir and Lesnar. Also, Fedor didn’t want a million per fight, he simply wants to compete in Sambo competitions which are a matter of national pride for him. If anything, Fedor was not willing to sell out to the UFC. When the UFC is willing to have the #1 fighter in the world, then maybe they’ll need to offer him a contract that doesn’t treat Fedor with the respect he deserves and grant him some flexibility.

  18. justin says:

    fixxer,
who are you implying is number one?

  19. T3chn3tnium says:

contract negotiations with dana/UFC is crap. he makes alot more money than what he pays the fighters. if i was fedor i wouldn’t sign with the UFC. that would be stupid on his part. he wouldn’t get a fourth of what he is getting now.

  20. B W says:

Ya know, I have always loved to watch Fedor and always believed he was the best HW in the world. But I am starting to get sick of this ****. If you want to fight UFC fighters and know the only way it will happen, is in the octagon. Then stop issuing challenges that will never happen, just to make yourself feel better, and get in the cage. I hope more than ever that AA knocks fedor out in the 1st round, just so he and Monty can get over themselves, and I don’t have to read about this useless crap anymore

  21. dbiz says:

Yeah. Fighting once a year makes you an undisputed champion. He’s getting so much more from his one Affliction fight per year.

I’m gonna say this to really kick off the flame war. If he keeps running from the UFC it just shows that he’s pussing out. Yeah, I said it. He is scared to fight the best in the world so he won’t sign unless it’s a co-promotion and likely under M-1’s rules. Preferably in Russia.

Man up, Fedor. Put up or shut the hell up.

  22. justin says:

    DBiz,
I’m going to venture to say that you would say that to his face…

  23. ose says:

Fedor would destory Lesnar pretty easily. Lesnar is just MMA noob and couldn’t even finish Herring and won via Lay n Pray. Fedor is so much better in every aspect of MMA except pure wrestling that it’s laughable. Nogueira will sub Lesnar pretty easily too, so it’s not like Lesnar will be champ for long time. After that Lesnar can keep fighting other B-level UFC HW’s or maybe rematch against the most overrated MA fighter ever in Randy Couture. Fedor is the undefeated, undisputed greatest MMA fighter ever and there’s no need to waste his time with noobs like Lesnar. He’s fighting Arlovski next, then Barnett most likely and after that, there’s plenty of great top10 HW’s from Fedor outside the UFC.

  24. Craig says:

As much of a lesnar mark as I am, fedors only competition
    Is Josh Barnett

  25. dbiz says:

ose, his record is 29-1-1 (with the no contest on HIS HEADBUTT OF NOGUEIRA). That doesn’t look undefeated. And since he won’t fight in the UFC, he’s not the undisputed anything.

  26. Jazzkok says:

Has anyone stopped to think about why M1 has jumped at the chance to put this fight together right away, yet ithas taken years to MAYBE have the couture vs fedor fight? That’s cuz they KNOW that fedor would DESTROY lesnar. Fedor would have killed randy but they are SO SURE he would kill lesnar that they have made an official offer.

If Dana’s smart, he’ll make up an excuse, and not have his newly crowned HW champ fight fedor. Like him or not, BROCK brings marketable and brings a lot of attention to the HW division. He’s made it more excting than it’s been in a long time. If he we’re to lose to another organzations hw, then the UFC’s hw division would once again seem like a joke. Brock can make more interesting fights and as the champ brings more “prestige” to the belt so it’s better that he doesn’t get his ass handed to him by fedor.

  27. Jazzkok says:

    *brock is marketable

  28. justin says:

    Jazzkok,
Read the article, you will see that Dana doesn’t have to make up an excuse, he just has to stay consistent on the precedent he’s already set regarding cross promotion.

  29. johnboy says:

fedor is a ****, he’s not the best fighter im the world and the reason being, he’s not fighting the best fighters in the world, WHY i hear u all ask, its because fedor is running scared of real compation, all he’s doing is fighting ufc rejects, man i hope the pitbull kicks his russion ass all the way back home, people who still kiss fedor’s ass need to wake up and smell the coffie, the guys a big fish in a little pond and thats not guna change unless he grows a pair of balls and comes and fight in the ufc, im sure dana would love to match lesnar/randy/a-silva vs fedor, but no fedor likes to fight bums, he’s a yellow belly twat who wants an easy ride!!

  30. T3chn3tnium says:

DBiz, fedor has fought all the pride HWs.. i dunno if i could say in their prime, but you can say they were younger. his one loss was stopped after a cut that he suffered in the opening seconds. people who have not seen the pride fights live, not on youtube, and are all pro ufc i can understand riding Dana’s Dick on what he has to say about fedor. don’t get me wrong UFC is by far the best MMA venue around and will continue to be so. but until proven otherwise fedor is top HW, if not #1 hes #2 no if, ands, or buts.

can you really say fedor is backing down from anyone? come on. its the stupid russian agents and danas big fat bald head that can’t swallow his pride for one fight and do a co-event. none of these MMA fighters are scared of anyone. its the greed that is not letting this fedor vs. UFC/legitimate fighters and so on. however, this is my opinion. :)
