An Expensive New Year For MMA Fans
I knew I would jinx it, I just knew it. MMARated.com reports that despite high hopes, both UFC 93 (Dublin) and UFC 95 (London) will definitely not be broadcast for free on SpikeTV due to concerns over the production budget. What does this mean? Well, as Fightlinker and CagePotato have already pointed out, you, the consumer, now get the opportunity to shell out cold hard cash for three UFC pay-per-views within about a 40 day period. Actually, it’s more like four pay-per-views if you want to see Arlovski and Fedor square off at Affliction on January 24th. Now I’m no math whiz, but if one were to order all of the mentioned shows at $44.95 a piece, that comes to roughly $179.80. Ouch.
The decision to charge for UFC 93 and 95 piques my interest for a few different reasons. The obvious being that since overseas events have historically been on the house, I feel like the UFC should continue such acts of good will into the new year and keep their loyal fans complacent. Secondly, UFC 95 could just as easily not feature Liddell vs. Silva, as an official announcement has yet to be made regarding the highly anticipated match up. Suffice to say that without Chuck and The Spyder in tow, the card would have to be pretty darn fantastic to constitute another pay-per-view purchase.
And lastly, it is no secret that the American economy isn’t exactly booming at the moment, nor does it look to rebound any time soon. In fact, I am still looking for a new full time job after being laid off nearly two months ago. And now the MMA world wants me to cough up 179 precious bucks? Looks like someone will be hitting the bar and the bootleg sites.

yeppers… i’ll be watching online! i wont be paying 44.95 on a saturday night for something that happened roughly seven hours earlier!
People like us are the reason the UFC has got this far. I mean, UFC 100 is coming up soon. We’ve bought the bad ppv’s, endured the boring fights, ****ed about the bad refereeing, and still bought the next ppv. I think that the UFC owes a lot more to the fans, especially when they have Spike TV at their disposal.
i agree with regoillin but as the true ufc fan i probably will watch all 3 and maybe the fourth for fedor and arlovski
u should come live in the uk we get all the events for free on setanta, well is £13 pound a month, but u get all the live football rugby tuf boxing etc great value. feel sorry for u guys tho plus $44.95 seems pritty high for an ppv, example ricky hatton fight this sat is £14.95, whats the min hourly rate in the usa ours is £5.60 so its like 3 hours work to order the fight, which isn’t that bad when u think about it.
Yeah 45 bucks is absurd. You gotta rob two 7-11’s for that kind of cash.
Minimum wage at the national level? $6.55, I believe.
I will be at Buffalo Wild Wings to see these fights. They usually show them at 3pm. They get the live feed.
so one ppv is like a days wage to the min wage guy that sucks!
Us uk viewers are ok due to us having it on a subcribe monthly package called setanta that also shows all boxing, football n other sports for only £10 per month, there no wa americans can get package buys for all the ufc’s tht year?
F’ that…..you will be paying for a fight that already happended….so what are they going to do, only air it at 3pm and not free at 9pm…
most the people making minimum wage arent doing many ppv’s and the new year wont be that expensive if most have a group of buddies that are WILLING to chip in.. hell you can share duties of ordering the ppv’s between three guys and only be out 45 if that is what u wish to do.. as far as going and seeing them in a bar that to can be aprox the same cost as a ppv, you could always watch them on the computer but really thats just not as fun as seeing it on your tv…. it just doesnt have to cost you 150 in that month if you become creative with it…
this is why you get a few buds together and make a night of it, then it only costs you maybe 15bucks for the night rather than 45$(90 uk lb)
last ppv before lesnar couture, we had 10 people grouped up the whole night cost a total of about 150, thats beer, buds, munchies, and the ppv… so really its not that expesive
the national wage in the USA is around 6.50, and in Canada the minimum its 8.00, but the converstion rates from NA to the UK are about double, so 1 lb = 2$ or more… or, a 45$ ppv here is like 20-25lb where you are, so even then we are paying more just based on the exchange rate… thought that might clear some currency confusion up for ya johnboy
but our fuel is cheaper as is most everything else
Now that all depends how all-out you go at your resident B-Dubs. This last weekend was expensive, but I felt compelled to tip the waitress well for her superb charm defense and we were there a couple extra hours, so a few extras were consumed. I could get away with only spending $25 for one ppv if I eat ahead of time. That’s not so bad for one night of entertainment.
More like $45 if the beer goes down as easy as last weekend….
HERE IN SANTA FE NEW MEXICO MININUM WAGE IS 10.50
thats some gud min wage there YZ,
CHEERS jitsuMAN very well explained
joe bucked again *sigh*
I’m sorry, but I have no interest in Hendo vs Ace. Sure, it will be a good fight, but it has no major impact on the UFC title landscape. I don’t see Rich ever being a champ at 205, and the only way he will at 185 os if Spider retires. Hendo might get a rematch with Spider someday, but I see the same outcome as the first match. Defintly not worthy of 44 dollars imo. I might go to the bar and buy a couple beers and watch it, but that’s about it.
Absolutely no way I pay for a taped fight. sorry.
Damn it, that sucks, and my wife will be pissed when she see the cable bill. Looks like i need to turn of paper bill and start the online notifications.
I’m just sick of all the “brought to you by _______” voice ads throughout a PPV I paid $45 for. I pay for cable. I pay extra for the PPV. STOP F***ING ADVERTISING TO ME!
haha that is the most annoying thing about the usa u always advertise something, i mean if just before the footie game the ref said this game is brought to u by bud ice the diffrence is drink abality, he would prob get a coin straight in his head, plus i was watching the WWE the other day and they advertised skittles an snickers haha wat the f*ck is that all about,
Have to find a good bar showing the ppv and dig into the couch for beer money…or beanbag chair
45 is expensive…but am i the only one paying 10 dollars extra for each event in sparkling HD
How do you pull that off, south?
Looks liek its time to spend.. hey look $179.. on that converter that gets me all those PPV fights free of charge right on my TV. Thanks Dana.
