Jake Shields Expects To Sign With The UFC, Wants To Fight GSP

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Nov 18, 2008

Jake ShieldsEliteXC welterweight title-holder Jake Shields, in a recent interview with Newsday, revealed his intention to sign with the UFC and challenge UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre for the title:

Shields is also upbeat about his future. He predicts he’ll land with the UFC, whose president Dana White has shown interest in him.

“For me, I’m looking for top competition,” Shields said. “I want to prove I’m the best fighter in the world. Georges St. Pierre, it’s an opportunity to fight him and show I’m the best.”

And joining the UFC would give Shields the opportunity to add another championship belt to his collection.

“I think I’m gonna be the top 170-pounder there. I wanna be the best. I wanna go there and take the belt,” Shields said. “I wouldn’t be happy with anything less.”

He has to get out from under Elite first…but that would be fun. Dana would probably make him fight someone else first before he got to fight GSP, though.

  2. Turk says:

This guy has got to be kidding. Him beating GSP not a cold day in hell. He would be lucky to beat Serra!!!!!

  3. Myke D says:

GSP WOULD TOUCH HIM IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES.

  4. brock says:

    GSP Will kill him

  5. mburtoni says:

He should have to at least get through Fitch and/or Sanchez first. GSP is booked for awhile; if he beats Penn, he has to defend against Alves before anyone else gets a shot.

  6. gunslinger says:

ooo wheres KOuch….im sure he is going to be very happy i say put hum against karo for his first fight or fitch

  7. gunslinger says:

wow u guys underestimate shields he beat diego in a grappling match in under a minute…he could beat gsp easily…..if he came in he would be the best jiu jitsu practitioner in the ww division…he could sub gsp easily….gsp is good at jits but not shields good….i could shields see catching him especially if gsp tries to take him down…on the ground gsp would be done….comparing gsp’s jits to shields is as pointless as comparing sherks conditioning to josh haynes

  8. Mikew says:

I thought Shields was great until his last fight.

  9. Mikew says:

Against Daley i thought he looked fairly average but his striking is what made me think this guy is a long way away from the fighter he thinks he is.

  10. huertarogerhuerta says:

if gsp is dumb enough to take it to the ground he deserves to get subbed but gsp will stand and trade and shields wont b able to take him down resultin in a gsp (T)KO. and y r we talking bout grappling matches? last i checked this was an mma fight which is pretty far off from a grappling match

  11. gunslinger says:

not by much…if shields can sub diego in a grappling match he can do it in mma

  12. Fr702 says:

Sheilds I really really good no doubt, GSP would win in a match against Sheilds imo, I like the idea of have Sheilds fight Fitch or McLovin but nevertheless if/when Dana signs Jake that will mix~up the 170lbs division

  13. huertarogerhuerta says:

not from wat i saw against daily. and besides that he needs to get him into a position to sub him. and with his stand up being as crappy as it is i think the top 5 wws in the ufc would b smart enough to keep it on the feet.so unless gsp, fitch, alves, kos, or sanchez try to take it to the ground its not goin there so for shields to sub anyone of those 5 hed need to pull off something spectacular like a flying armbar

  14. Oh please let him fight GSP… Shields has not fought in an MMA anybody of real significance, and his striking is lightyears behind top competition. He is a great BJJ submission expert but do you really see him as more dominant than Penn? If we use the ever so utilized but really useless who fought who categories, Fitch dominated Sanchez, despite what the blind judges saw in their fight and GSP dominated Fitch. Shields is a great WW, and maybe even a top 10 guy. But until I see him fight guys at the level of Koshcheck, Karo, Alves, Fitch and GSP, then I’m still in doubt of him being the best in the world… But PLEASE let him fight GSP so he can get destroyed and then go back to his WEC belt for support.

  15. Jake sure is begging to be eating through a straw for a while. I don’t think people realize the jump in competition. Thiago, Fitch, I just watch the UFC and I think I could beat Shields.

Really is a smart approach though, talk talk talk… I wish him the best of luck, but I really don’t even see him beating Kampman. After he loeses to GSP and is rushed to the hospital the only thing he will be winning in the WW division is a wheel chair race with Burkman.

  16. johnboy says:

i haven’t really seen jake fight, all i no about him is what a read on this site, but i think alot of people on here are “ufc natzis” as KOuch likes to say, so most people just write a fighter off straight away even before they have signed. anyway he should be saying he wants to fight BJ if he wants the belt cos penn is guna kick gsp ass all the way back to mmmmmm france??? canada??? who no’s, in the words on BJ PENN “gsp your dead”

  17. Nico says:

he could beat gsp easily? he could sub gsp easily? IF ANYONE THINKS SHEILDS COULD EVEN GET GSP TO THE GROUND THEY CLEARLY HAVE NOT SEEN GSP IN ACTION OR SHEILDS LAST FIGHT WITH DAILY. FAR TO EXPLOSIVE AND QUICK FOR SHEILDS AND PLUSE HIS TAKEDOWN DEFENSE IS SECOND TO NONE. I WILL BE SUPRISED IF BJ TAKES HIM DOWN. gunslinger PASS THE GOOD STUFF BECAUSE YOU ARE ON CLOUD NINE… THIS IS MMA NOT A JIU JITSU COMPOTITION.

GSP’S MMA SKILLS ARE THE BEST RIGHT NOW AND I WOULD SAY GOOD ENOUGH TO FIGHT SHEILDS AND WIN ANY DAY, EVEN IF IT GOES TO THE GROUND.

  18. Josh V says:

    John Fitch
    Thiago Alves
    Josh Koschek
    Matt Hughes
    Karo Parisyan
    An Octagon Girl
    Joe Rogan

Shields, if you’re reading, please know that every single person on this list will hand you a huge loss, much less GSP

  19. Jazzkok says:

I hesrd he was getting Diego Sanchez.

He wants my boy GSP??? Dude he’s DREAMING!!!

The WEC WW div. isn’t anything like it is in the UFC so i don’t care if he was the champ. He’s got to prove himself, first.

GSP would make him ugglier then how he left fitch.

  20. jiujitsuMAN says:

ya poor shields will need just that, a big honkin huge sheild to protect him from “the rush”

position before submission is my dojo’s no1 rule when it comes to ground game… and unless you can get your position and hold it you wont have the chance to submit…

its the same arguement time and time again… anything can and will happen in the oct, but flat out saying sheilds can beat GSP is far-fetched…

so what if his jiujitsu is a skill point below sheilds, he makes up for that small difference in one aspect of skill with, conditioning, stand-up, and ground work, GSP trains with the Canadian national wrestling team and shows them up… he trains what 5 days a week or more… i dont see sheidls beating him… not even on paper

  21. T3chn3tnium says:

i would lose to an octagon girl.. :)

  22. kouch says:

    Gunslinger,

Hello old friend. I’ve been busy as hell lately and feel like I am going crazy. However, Shields news I have.

Shield’s recently sparred(boxing) with a close asscoiate of mine who is a pro boxer.(sorry I cannot mention names) Anyway, around the boxing circle of gyms I have relationships with the word is that Shield’s boxes like a “little kid throwing haymakers with his head down.” What I tried explaining to these boxers was that Jake is a JJ guy working on his stand up. I also pointed out that he could likely go three rds boxing and stay concious against many boxers oppose to going 3 rds MMA/JJ where Jake would submit the boxers in a minute or two. F-ING boxing/MMA arguments! I am so sick of it. People from the world of boxing are jealous as hell of the uprise of MMA and make uneducated remarks due to lack of knowldge and arogance. Boxing is not the only skilled style of fighting. If anything it is one of the most boring at the present time. We all know Jake needs to work on his stand up and he is doing exactly that. Ragardless, this is not boxing….it’s MMA. Fighters do not NEED supreme power in their striking. Of course it is a good thing to have in one’s arsenal but the point is…..the bottom line is…..the fact remains the same…..this is MMA. All different fighting styles are involved and matched against each other. Hmmmmmm…..Royce Gracie comes to mind right now for some crazy reason. Shields belongs in the UFC because his JJ is f-ing sick! HE is badass. Do I think he could beat GSP? Standing NO F-ing way. If it goes to the ground…….UPSET waiting to happen yet again to GSP. Jake belongs in the UFC but needs to fight the #10, 7, 5 guy and then get a UFC review. I feel Jake is very under rated by the masses.

  23. Josh V says:

    kouch

I agree with you on this issue. I believe Shields cannot box, period. If he is calling out GSP, someone needs to seriously give that boy a piece of reality:

    1. First, you have to GET GSP down
    2. Then you have to KEEP him down
    3. Next, you have to position yourslef for a submission
    4. Execute submission

Shields can do none of those things against any top welterweights (Fitch, Kos, Pitbull), less the king of all welterweights.

  24. kouch says:

    Josh,

My friend……my dear Josh……little Joshua……my dear friend……friend Josh….dear josh friend….Jake has done that to Fitch in the past. Diego Sanchez too. Yes he can do that. I believe 100% he would beat GSP on the ground as well. Jake’s JJ is what makes him special. Not just a good fighter or great fighter….a special fighter. Above average dear Josh.

  25. Fr702 says:

KOuch, good to see you back in all of your splender, seriously dude u going Friday?

  26. gunslinger says:

people underestimate shields and dont understand who he has beat in my opinion he is at least #3 or #4 in the world…just because he isnt from the ufc doesnt mean he sucks and incase some people didnt know shields has beaten the following very talented fighters- jeremy jackson, sakurai, misaki, dave menne, yushin okami, carlos condit, pyle, thimpson, and daly…not to mention fitch and diego in grappling in which he destroyed them…and how come everyone is saying he has to take gsp down…hello theres the old fashion trick called “PULLING GUARD” …duh!….and ya im pretty sure if hughes can catch gsp then i know shields would turn gsp into a canadian pretzel and wash that pretzel down with a nice canada dry ginger ale!..and no im actually not that big of a shields fan heck i used to make fun of Kouch about him but I do believe he is highly underrated and that is only because he wasnt in the ufc….everyone needs to learn there is more mma out there besides the ufc…heck most people here didnt even know who anderson silva was before he fought leben and would have lol’d at someone if they would have said he would eventually turn franklin and henderson into dust

  27. Fr702 says:

There is other MMA than the UFC get outta here

But seriously Gun, I stand by the statement that most people don’t realize how talented Sheilds is… Hell even if GSP just shot in on Sheilds and he had to work to be in gaurd he is dangerous but he won’t fight GSP first well maybe when St.Pierre loses to BJ “Motherfuccking” Penn then they have their match I see it now Sheilds v St.Pierre May of 2009 in Toronto (sorry I had too..)

  28. Nico says:

I do belive sheilds is a great fighter and would be a very great addition to the UFC but no way as good as GSP, The Pit Bull, Fitch, or BJ right now. I would say Diego would be a great fight for him. Maybe Kos but it might be a problem getting him to the floor. Also how do you pull guard with a defense like GSP’s. get real. Sheilds would be lucky to even clinch with GSP if he decides to even get close.
