14,272 Attend UFC 91 For $4.8 Million Live Gate

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Nov 17, 2008

MGM Grand Garden ArenaA near-sellout crowd of 14,272 fans packed the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night for UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar, which was highlighted by Brock Lesnar’s second-round TKO of former title-holder Randy Couture in the evening’s main event.

The event recorded a live gate of $4.8 million, which is good for the third most lucrative UFC event ever in Nevada behind UFC 66, which was headlined by Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz, and UFC 79, which featured Georges St-Pierre vs. Matt Hughes and Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva.

UFC President Dana White announced both figures at the post-UFC 91 press conference.

    CORRECT ME IF WRONG GUYS…

I HATE KIMBO I DON’T LIKE ANYTHING IN HIS GAME. BUT TECHNICALLY HE HAS THE SAME EXPERIENCE AS BROCK IF NOT MORE ONLY CUZ YOU HAS BE IN FIGHTING FULL CONTACT AND NOT THE FAKE **** LIKE BROCK AND I KNOW HE IS A LEGIT WRESTLER BUT COME ON… SO IM ALWAYS HEARING DANA WHITE SAY HOW PATHETIC KIMBO IS AND THIS AND THAT AND HOW HES GARBAGE BUT ITS HERITATING BECAUSE DANA BROUGHT IN BROCK WICH IS WORSE I THINK BECAUSE HE CAME FOR FAKE ****… DOES ANYONE AGREE WITH ME

*I KNOW I MISSPELLED BUT THIS IS NOT A SPELLING BEE…. GET OVER IT

  2. PuppyNutter says:

No your right bro. its the same both guy got main event cause their famusness, got easy fights and make more money than they worth.

  3. dauminator says:

In terms of experience Brock and Kimbo’s situation is similar, but there’s really no comparison. While Brock wouldn’t have been in any main event yet, he definately would have been hired by the UFC even if he wasn’t in WWE, considering his size/athleticism/NCAA title. Kimbo wouldn’t even be looked at if not for his internet days.

You could make that comparison only if Brock got completely dominated by Mir and Herring, yet still managed to get into the main event of a big show, which wouldn’t have happened.

  4. justin says:

Brock came from legit wrestling before he went into fake wrestling. So he had already competed in real sanction competition as a wrestler prior to coming to MMA, and had been runner-up and champion in the NCAA tournament as a Heavy Weight. Kimbo came from non-legit, unsanctioned street fighting into MMA. Also, its been shown for a long time in MMA that a decorated wrestling background makes a very good base for a mixed martial artist. Street fighting, not so much. Lesnar already had a ground game, and stand up is a little easier to learn than a ground game (only a little). Kimbo’s only attribute was his stand up, which obviously isn’t that great either. Lesnar also fought real, decorated opponents. Not has beens and never weres.

  5. yzfoxracing says:

YEAH I GUESS YOUR RIGHT.. I ENJOY THE BASHING FROM DANA ABOUT KIMBO BUT AFTER THE BROCK/RANDY FIGHT IT JUST DIDN’T FEEL RIGHT CUZ I DON’T FEEL LIKE BROCK DESERVED THE CHANCE… BUT DO GOTTA CONGRATULATE HIM ON THE VICTORY…

  6. huertarogerhuerta says:

u made peoples point against u. brock originally came from an ncaa backround where as kfergie comes from a backround of backyard shenanigins. i dont even see the comparison. brock real sport in his college wrestling he then took that to entertainment then to football then to mma. kfergie went from knocking out bums off the street to… well knockin out bums off the street. if u had the size and success in college that brock did and the wwf or e or wateva the hell its called anymore offered u a mil to b one of there entertainers ud take it. and also remember the things a college wrestler can do compitition wise r extremly limited especially back then when mma was still an underground thing. A. coach college wrestling B. try to get on an olympic squad C. join the wwf. those were ur options. o and another thing that seperates brock and kfergie is brocks lost to a top heavyweight and beat a top heavyweight something kfergie cant say unless he goes back in time and fights james thompson circa 2005

  7. yzfoxracing says:

WELL I KINDA MEANT MORE SO ABOUT BEING ENTERTAINERS…

  8. huertarogerhuerta says:

and as for brocks deserving of the shot hes not plain and simple but this was probably a fight randy wanted and mayb possibly even asked for randy wants tough fights doesnt care bout the belt he just loves compitition and he wants to fight the biggest and the baddest fighters out there so in all likly hood randy wanted this fight

  9. justin says:

Why Brock Lesnar is different from K-Ferg:
“Lesnar finished his amateur career as a two-time NJCAA All-American, two-time NCAA All-American, two-time Big Ten Conference Champion, and the 2000 NCAA heavyweight champion with a record of 106-5 overall in four years of college.”

  10. justin says:

    huertarogerhuerat,
Granted its arguable that, Lesnar didn’t “pay his dues” and “earn” his title shot. But the fact that he won when he got the shot, means he deserved it, and if he successfully defends against Mir/Nog will further prove that point.

  11. huertarogerhuerta says:

o yea i totally agree my thing is people r lookin at his record and experiance in mma and sayin he doesnt deserve it and by that logic there right but im still under the assumption that randy wanted this fight which makes him deserving cuz randy asked for him.

  12. Ryan in NY says:

Yeah I don’t think you can compare those two guys at all. Simply put… Lesnar beat Couture and Herring. Kimbo got KO’ed by a relatively unknown. That settles it as far as I’m concerned.

I agree though that Brock still needs to prove himself a bit and I think he’ll do that if he defends the title against Nog / Mir. Isn’t there a saying that you’re not the Champ until you defend the title? Couldn’t apply more for Brock.

Lastly… no matter how good / bad you think he is right now, it’s very apparent that once he gets some decent MMA / BJJ training he’ll be very difficult to beat.

  13. huertarogerhuerta says:

he needs submission defenses and hell b a human wrecking machine.

  14. yzfoxracing says:

I AM WITH YOU GUYS DONT’ GET ME WRONG HE REALLY IS PROVING HIMSELF. BUT WHAT IM SAYING IS THAT DANA WAS GIVING ELITEXC ALL KINDS OF SH1T ABOUT GETTING KIMBO BUT DANA TOOK THE SAME CHANCE WITH BROCK… AND IM NOT HATING ON BROCK WHO WOULDN’T TAKE THE CHANCE IF IT WAS GIVEN TO THEM…

  15. justin says:

    YZF,
Dana did take a chance on signing Brock, but Brock came to Dana, and this is my guess at what he said, “I want real competition, you can give it to me, and I can give you WWE fans buying your PPVs, lets make a deal.”
So, Dana decided “Ok, I’ll give you a former champion, if you beat him, good for you, if you get embarrassed, you can go back to the farm leagues.” Neither happened, and Brock showed a lot of promise in that fight and nearly won it before making a rookie mistake and stepping into a submission. So Dana gave Brock another good test in a veteran that had nearly KOed the interim champ, and Brock played with him like a cat does a mouse. So those two fights alone (even though one was a loss) Brock showed he wasn’t a bust.

  16. dbiz says:

He may have been a good wrestler 9 years ago in college, he is at best a mediocre wrestler now, as evidenced by the fact that he lays on people and waits for rounds to be over unless they are already stunned. See: the Randy fight and the last 12 minutes of the Herring fight.

He needs to re-learn how to wrestle because he is, to quote the “great” Junie Browning, a “boring-ass” fighter.

  17. jiujitsuMAN says:

    his wrestling is fine,

the fact that he can lay on top of a guy for 15 mins prooves that… lol if his wrestling wasnt that good he wouldnt have been able to control herring on the ground…

while lesnar maybe a boring fighter, he still needs to learn ALOT, and he is… hes majorly lacking in submissions offence and defence… but when you have arms as massive as his trying to submit a guy isnt the easiest thing to do… to much bulk gets in the way…

id say around lesnars 8-10th fight he will truly start to shine, and show what he is really capable of….

another thing to remember is he has fought 3 times this year right? which in of itself is impressive, hes a hungry guy and hes got his teeth into the belt, good luck getting that bone away from that rabbid dog

  18. dbiz says:

If he’s gonna lay on people for entire fights, I’ll start referring to him as a sloth Starnes. At least Starnes moved while he wasn’t fighting. Lesnar wants to be a professional wet blanket apparently…

  19. Markus J says:

Have to give Brock props for his win, but this fight raises a much more important question that the UFC needs to address and soon. That being, the need to bring in a Super Heavy Weight Division for fighters the size of Brock Lesnar.

Let’s face it people. In terms of skill whether it be stand up or submission, Brock is far from the best in the game. His sheer size and power is what allows him to dominate over smaller fighters like Couture and Herring.

Can you really say a 285lb man fighting a 220lb man is fair? That is basically like putting Randy Couture in a fight vs a guy like Clay Guida. (I did not use BJ Penn because though 155lb champ he walks around at 180) This is just a clear mis-match.

No matter how you look at it, it’s a 65lb freaking weight difference come fight time and I don’t care how gifted an athlete you are, that is going to cause troubles.

UFC seriously need to consider forming a super heavy weight division, something like 240 and up.

  20. justin says:

    Markus J,
    1. it was 56 lbs. Lesnar weighed himself at 276 before walking into the cage.
    2. People complain about how thin Heavyweight is now…it would be even worse with a super heavy weight division.
    3. Randy had around 400 days to put on muscle knowing that he would be fighting at heavy weight when he came back.
    4. The rules are the rules, and the fighters agree to the rules when they sign the contract. If they don’t think its fair, then they shouldn’t sign the contract. Obviously Randy still thought he could beat Brock with the weight difference.
    5. Royce Gracie beat guys with similar weight advantages in the early UFCs.

  21. Fr702 says:

when Royce Gracie fought Dan Severn i believe the weight difference was in the neighborhood of 60+ lbs i believe

and if you did a super heavy @ 240 and up, will then complain when Mark Hunt comes in @ 275 and Zulhino comes in @ 300+ and fight GG who came in at 240 or so to fight these guys is that unfair too?

Brock did what he had to do go down to 265 to fight in the HW division and make the fight legal, Randy could have packed on more weight or whatever but i thought he did pretty darn well then he got clipped so be it the bigger guy won, but he didnt win just because he is big, he won because he connected and went to hammerfist the shhhhh out of Randy it is what it is

  22. rudeone says:

All I am going to say is how did that chump kimbo even get brought up. It is stuff like that which made it possible for that bum to enter mma because people always compare him to real fighters where his name should not be mentioned. Kimbo wouldn’t beat a game ww from the ufc let alone a hw and to compare him even just with lesner is a joke. Anyways the mw division is looking much better maybe silva will stick around for a while all in all great card with some great fights.

  23. dbiz says:

The UFC could go super-heavy if they would ACTIVELY SEEK HEAVYWEIGHTS. How long since a heavyweight TUF? Have they made serious passes at Overeem? Have they tried to get AA back?

The UFC doesn’t need more middleweights. They don’t need more lightweights. They may need a couple more welters, and one or two light heavies. They need a lot more heavyweights and they refuse to find them.

I’m on the verge of saying disband the whole division.

  24. Ryan in NY says:

Marcus … you have a point though I don’t see there being enough talent at that size to sustain an entire division.

I thought the same thing during the fight… Couture v Lesnar is like Chuck Liddell v Clay Guida.

  25. fred says:

Brock never asked for the fight, it was presented to him. How could he turn it down? Tim Silvia had the same weight advantage on Randy, so it wasn’t just the weight. A superheavyweight division is a real possibility, but I’d start it at 265. (Although I can’t recall more than a hand full of fighters bigger than that - a few from the early days of the UFC, but none of them would be serious competitors.)

  26. JC Champagne says:

really no one can say it wasnt fair, or lesnar didnt deserve the title shot, randy himself was one of the people who won the hvywt title with under 10 fights to his record… not only that, he agreed to fight in the heavyweight div. because it was so “thin”, and now with a person like lesnar who is a TRUE heavyweight… people still **** and complain about every little thing they can… lesnar may not have deserved the shot AHEAD of many of the heavyweights, but if you go in there and beat the current champ, especially being that it was the legendary Randy Couture… then how could anyone say you didnt belong in there on that night?

  27. Myke D says:

Brock and Fedor… Make It Happen.

  28. dbiz says:

Fedor will never set foot in the UFC. It would require fighting more than once or twice a year and he couldn’t do his sambo tourneys in Europe or fight freak show artists in Japan.

  29. Like most debates this one will go nowhere fast. Was Kimbo overrated!? Yes.
Did he deserve to accolades he received!? No. These things are factual. If any of us were in the position he was in you’d take the opportunity. I know i would. What the people around him did wrong was use his name to catapult him into a league of trained athletes. He is coming from backyard brawls. He has a great deal of heart and determination, i give him that. Now i do not see him being able to enter MMA again. Dana White himself said he’d give him the opportunity but he’d have to work for it. Fight real fighters from the ground up. Brock in my opinion and i stress on the word Opinion because like assholes …everyone’s got one(or at least should..lol). Brock is a completely different animal. Was he hyped up for entrance into MMA. Of Course. His skill and popularity in the WWE cross-over. So whoever wasn’t a fan of MMA was now a fan becaue Brock has now enter the octagon. His level of skill is above and beyond a Kimbo Slice. Even though he is coming from a business where u pull your punches so to speak. You cannot deny that he fights with alot of heart and alot of wit. His only loss which had to come by submission was to Frank Mir. Frank was getting his ass handed to him. He was smart …grab a limb and don’t let go. I think Brock has only touched the surface. I think he has alot more to offer MMA and time will tell.
