WEC 36 “Faber vs. Brown” Results: Faber Upset By Brown; Sonnen, Garcia Also Victorious
Mike Brown upset WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber on Wednesday night, TKO’ing the 145-pound champ midway through the opening round of their headlining bout at WEC 36 “Faber vs. Brown” at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Faber appeared to have the upper hand early, connecting more frequently with strikes while Brown looked for takedowns. On a single-leg attempt midway through the frame Faber made a minor mistake and Brown capitalized, rocking Faber with a right before dropping him to the canvas with a left. Brown followed him to the ground and finished him off with strikes to force the referee to step in and declare Brown the new WEC featherweight champion.
After the loss Faber praised Brown’s performance but vowed to recapture the title, while Brown thanked the crowd and his camp before being helped to the locker room with an apparent rib injury.
In other featured action Chael Sonnen stood his way to a unanimous decision over WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho in a three-round, non-title contest and Leonard Garcia quickly dispatched of Jens Pulver with strikes just over one-minute into their main card clash.

Good show but all the fightes I wanted to win….lost. Filho looked like **** and is the one exception to a fighter I was going aganst. Very happy he lost….though Sonnen should have KO that fatass.
I guess we all know what the fruit on TUF tastes like after watching that Filho fight…
Was it just me, or was Sonnen grabbing Filho’s package? Garcia looked very dangerous, but the way he KOed Pulver, and the way Pulver just kinda squatted and got punched was odd. Faber/Brown really shocked me, nice job by Brown, but I think Faber will get the belt back. Really disappointed in the Sonnen/Filho fight. I don’t think either man went all in, and I understand why the people there were booing.
I love the wec, but what I realized today, is that none of these guys really stand a chance in the UFC. Faber,Brown, Garcia might be able to beat some low level 155’s but no way would they stand a chance against the top 155’s. And the 185’s would be slaughtered.
Yes Mike Brown won i have been on his bandwagon ever since his win over Yves Edwards…. I knew he was gonna win just did not think it was gonna come by TKO. Thought it would be another exciting descision. Glad Sonnen won and very happy Cerrone won was a good card however a little dissapointed about the Pulver fight. Cant wait to see Brown defend his title over Garcia but i think a guy to watch in the 145 division is Jose Aldo, another big exciting fighter. Keep an eye out.
The fruit on TUF? That was more like the sushi!
Ok well this sucks, I haven’t been able to watch opposite day in the WEC,and the people I wanted to win clearly didn’t ofcourse with the exception of Cerrone and Sonnen
*questions*
Did they show any prelims and how were they if they did
How bad did Jens look
Did Filho give Sonnen the strap
And what the F happen to Faber ie was it like Chuck v Rashad or Chuck v Tito II
What’s was tonight like watching opposite day
Faber tried to pull some stupid flying elbow **** and got caught.. faber got to big for his britches
FR702,
*Answers*
They showed the top four fights on the list, and then the Aaron Simpson fight.
Jens got surprised by Garcia’s power after he got hit in an exchange, then he got hit some more and he kinda sat down against the cage and covered his head until the ref stopped it.
Not sure what you mean by this. Basically Filho was only interested in fighting on the ground. Sonnen in the first round made some passing attempts from standing, but almost got caught in a few subs. 2nd and 3rd Sonnen took Filho down a few times, but would back out and make him stand up, then just had a stand up fight. 3rd round, first half of the round, the punches looked like they were playing patty cake.
Faber tried to get overly creative and like bounced off the cage and tried to throw a spinning elbow and got hit on the button before he made contact.
Some of the fights were entertaining, a couple surprises (for me anyways) and a really odd fight with Filho/Sonnen. I think its worth watching just to see how odd the fight was.
Guys thank you very much I have a better idea now
Faber pulling some bs like that, he can’t be successful at it everytime
@Justin, I was wondering if Filho’s corner kept their word to Lindland and Sonnen and gave the title to Sonnen for beating Filho
Thanku again
FR,
Now I get it, sorry, its getting late here. I don’t know anything about that, they announced the winner and then they cut away, didn’t even interview either fighter.
For a free card on a wednesday night i thought it was a very entertaining card. except the filho fight.. sonnen was just throwing some weak ass punches.. hope thats not all he has.. others were very interesting.
in Iraq couldn’t catch the fight….Was the faber stopage accurate or did it look like he could continue? And for Filho the hole not making weight thing is BS he should lose the title the paper view got postponed NO EXCUSE I fight amateur and there is no way you can be 7 pounds over especially when you thought you were gonna fight two months prior poor example of a champion!!!
how did u get to watch it t3chn3tnium? do u live in the usa cos i just kinda figered u were from bolton?
I watched the Pulver vs Garcia fight and Faber vs Brown on mmalinker not too surprised with the Garcia fight i expected Garcia to get a decision but a TKO was a surprised.
Never expected Brown to beat Faber in that manner that was surprise of the year and as big as GSP vs Serra I in terms of shock value.
At least this creates huge interest in a rematch next year and more than likely their fist PPV this panned out great for Zuffa in terms of future shows.
The Filho bout was a total bore fest. What the happened to the wrecking machine that he used to be. It seemed he was proving a point to someone at ringside. WTF was that all about? Faber on the other hand was way too ****y for his own good.
just watched the faber fight and the pulver fight, those people who are slateing pulver saying he just sat on on the mat and got hit need to go watch that fight again, garcia hit jens with some f*ckin sick punches i dont think jens knew quite were he was, garcia tho was swinging hard and connected with a good few, faber was takeing some bad shots on the groung too, those sorta upper cuts were sick by brown ref should of stoped it earlier imo.
I agree Johnboy it seemed a bit excessive the punishment Faber took.
Garcia is a great little fighter and ran over Jens in spectacular style not could have took that many shots and with his Mexican heritage could become be poster boy for WEC
johnboy,
I wasn’t discounting Garcia’s power, or the fact that he got in several clean hits on Pulver, it was just Pulver’s reaction I was commenting on. Garcia definitely rocked his world.
You know yesterday was such a great day to be around town no matter who you voted for that the 15 minutes of —- that we all had to watch last night did not even ruin it.I guess the sherdog interview with Filho was pure fiction because that wasn’t the same guy. He did not make it to Florida. I can’t say anything really great about Chael either. No disrespect to his father but I will never accept the idea of Chael as a sympathetic individual-hero for the sport. He was completely below the belt verbally last time and well we all saw where his hands were last night. He did nothing to win that fight. No Wrestler’s ground and pound not even a merciful uppercut standing to put us all out of our misery.Bryan Baker is an athletic terror and Chael handled him for 15 minutes just to prove himself and he was so mad at Paulo that he wants to play tip tap with him? WTF? Please deliver him to Anderson Silva ASAFP!
Nissen traded a loss in the WEC for what would have been a win in the Carolina Crown. Aitor could not have handled him either…
Faber had to learn humility last night. It was a wrong place wrong time thing and he will be back. Anyone think the PPV is dead? The Faber Torres dream match and Faber-Tyson G 2 are definitely on hold
which sucks of course but Faber Garcia would definitely sell out IMO. Go ahead with it anyway.
As for Jens well….I think he has a couple of fights left in him it’s just the WEC is like Arena Football and things happen fast. He may need a year off to train.I think the move to Hume’s camp may have been a bad idea.He looked slighlty hesitant…off…Not Paulo off of course…
Anyway have a great day!
I wasnt impressed with the night of fights IMO… to be honest , I found the last Elite xc card to be a better show ….. filho was the biggestt dissappointment by far . If he was gonna do that why didnt he just not bother ?
garcia was incredible! he showed some real skill in his decision loss to huerta, so i was looking for him to dispatch pulver.
filho… what was that? he did’nt look like he even cared to be there. if i were chael, i’d be p*ssed too. filho’s actions (missing weight and laying on the canvas) showed a total lack of respect for the belt and his opponent.
as an afterthought faber should have played it safe through the first round to measure brown. his balls out attack allowed him to get caught. that elbow would have worked against alot of other fighters. faber looked good….but he got caught.
i was really hoping osterneck would have pulled it out, but rosholt’s iron chin got in the way. he took some hard shots, great effort by both!
razor rob did’nt show up….too bad.
oh, yeah….ROLL TIDE!
i thought it was a good card….rosholt took a beating, but showed he had some great cardio and a nice chin….pulver got rocked…hard….that guy in the prelim fight they showed got absolutely knocked senseless, that was one of the nastiest ko’s ive ever seen, its hard to hit somebody harder than that….filho was garbarge, and it was embarassing to watch….and faber got punched so hard in the ear he tried to cut a backflip, but he’ll be back and better…no reason to complain about that card…5 fights and only one went to the judges…come on people dont get greedy!!!…..the end
filho wasnt fighting last night ….. he just stood/laid there for 3 rounds . looked like he just hit the pipe before he got into his trunks …..
Garcia looked like Ricky Hatton at the end, back and forth, right/left, body/head shots to end it. Faber tries to get too creative sometimes and got caught on this one. Congrats Mike Brown. Sonnen/Filho really no comment there, hate to see the last MW fight in WEC be that way. Only complaint on this card, is where I live. On the West coast, it started at 5:00pm and was over at 7:15pm. I really wanted to see Razor Rob and Cowboy, but they did not show it here.
I wouldn’t want to be Mike Brown right now. Leonard Garcia is one bad dude thats starvin for a shot and Brown woke a sleeping dragon in Faber and Faber is going to be better than ever and hopefully won’t try anymore crazy mortal kombat elbows.
didn’t see the sonnen/Filho fight but from what im reading it sounds like both fighters were boring uninterested in fighting.
I wanted to see Cowboy whoop some ass but they didn’t show and it sounded like an awesome fight. Cant wait to see Cowboy get a shot at the belt, hopefully he’ll bring it home to Denver!!
And Damn Rosholt is one ugly bastard after that beating he took, but good job on getting the tko. He has one mighty chin
I’m not From Bolton. my ancestors derive from there.. i’m a native of Texas! woot!
Just watched the Faber v Brown fight and from the begining Faber didnt look good and when Brown pushed/threw Faber it seemed to piss him off and then Brown hit Faber and Faber tried for a Anderson Silva type elbow a got knocked on his ass wow….. good for Brown, i still like Faber and believe he is still the top in his division, everyone loses sometimes but damn he got hit hard, and the way Brown saw that elbow comming and moved his head and struck Faber was awesome…
What i didnt see is if they interviewed Faber or Brown, if soo what did either of them say?
Brown v Garcia next?
do you guys think that Faber took Brown lightly and didnt respect his skills?
@FR702, they interviewed both, was awesome when Brown said “I F*ckin hit hard.” And they were like “Well thank goodness we are on cable.” Faber talked about working his way back up and getting his title back, pretty much the usual when you get knocked off your throne for the time being.
I don’t know if he took him lightly, but when Brown tossed him across the cage, you could see Faber was not only pissed, but knew this guy has some power. Possibly the 2.5 month push out for the fight had something to do with it, Faber might not have been as pumped as he was previous. Many factors could have played a part, but in the end, Brown evaded a crazy spinning elbow and landed a beautiful right on the button. What surprised me the most, was Faber didn’t try any crazy rolls of reverses when Brown was throwing uppercuts on the ground. He pretty much just tried to block his face with his left hand.
