Gomi-Kitaoka Still On Tap For January

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Nov 5, 2008

Takanori GomiDespite an upset loss to relative-unknown Sergey Golyaev on Saturday at Sengoku 6, Takanori Gomi will meet lightweight grand prix winner Satoru Kitaoka for the vacant Sengoku lightweight title on January 4th in Japan, according to Sherdog.

“I have no need to fight that Russian fighter (Golyaev),” Kitaoka said at the post-fight press conference. “If it was me in there tonight, I would have crushed that Russian in seconds. I had a tougher time than Gomi — my two fights tonight and my training for them — so that’s why I said what I said [when I challenged Gomi in the ring]. Anyone have a problem with that?”

Gomi, a top lightweight ranked as high as number two in the 155-pound division prior to his surprising loss, will look to rebound from three-straight lackluster performances when he takes on Kitaoka in January, and should he emerge victorious his first defense of the lightweight title could be a rematch with Golyaev.

Not keen on the fact that the guy lost to an unknown, and his next fight in the same organization is for the title. Sounds like they had already decided they wanted him to be champion.

Guys , from the fight I saw …gomi won …. it was a very poor descision loss. they fight with different rules than we are used to and he won due to other factors other than the actual fight . gomi won 2 rounds clearly but due to the russian coming closest to finishing the fight mid way that they gave it to him … doesnt matter than gomi ruled the rounds , the russian came closest so in their rules that makes him the winner . kinda funny ,but not in the haha way

Gee, it’s almost like he’s Nick Diaz, fighting in EliteXC, isn’t it?

  6. lol DBiz. i’d so agree with you except that it’s worse.. I mean Gomi lost to Nick Diaz WHILE HE WAS STONED ON MARAJUANA! lol!! I have friends that wont even order a pizza for themselves stoned cause they are too lazy, and Diaz is able to slap on a gogo-plata against the worlds best lightweight while high?

Gomi like most of all pride fighters are heavily over rated. I hope Gomi someday comes to the UFC. Personally I loved how Dana started buying up all the Pride fighters contracts to throw them to the wolves immediately. Shogun was a bust, Sok was worthless, Big Nog was nearly pummled by big timmah, Herring lost to O’Brien for goodness sakes.. And need we really even go in to Cro Cop?

    Bwahahah
