“The Spider” Meant No Disrespect
Various entities throughout the MMA media scope have been critical of Anderson Silva’s less than punishing performance against Patrick Cote at UFC 90 this past weekend. After much speculation as to what exactly the motivation was behind Silva’s unorthodox antics, the middleweight king has alas released a statement to Sherdog explaining his actions:
“There are many people saying I was disrespecting Cote, but this is absolutely not true. My game plan since the beginning was fight five rounds, inducing him to commit mistakes and capitalize on that during the first three rounds and look for the knockout during the fourth and fifth rounds. It was working, and the biggest proof of that is that I almost didn’t waste any blows. I connected with a couple of good punches and knees, but unfortunately he got hurt and the fight was over. This is not my fault.”
So there you have it. Silva didn’t mean any harm with that helping hand and the constant feet switching and so forth, it was just a well crafted strategy. Shocking how such a game plan made for the worst showing ever for the worlds “pound-for-pound” best. I would say that Silva should take a lesson from all of this and stick to his traditional, more exciting “immediate slaughter” strategy. But keep in mind the UFC offered little in serious competition with “The Predator” so can we really harp on the champ for not taking him any more seriously?

Silva did NOT disrespect Cote and those who are saying he did are people who just want to talk crap for no reason. They want to find any reason to bash a good fighter who represents himself in a positive manner inside and outside of the ring.
speaking of disrespecting silva, did anyone else see him holding hands with that dude just before his fight. I think anderson maybe light a little light on his feet in and OUT of the ring. correct me if i’m wrong.
Married and I believe two children
i stand corrected. It just looked kinda queer i guess.
He was not disrespecting. After Cote took a serious knee to the forehead, a straight left, and a high left leg kick and was still smiling, Silva went into counter punch mode, but unfortunalty so was Cote.
Silva could have finished that fight in rd one. Cote was way out classed.
Silva apparently couldn’t have. Because he didn’t. Or are you one of the people that believed he was half-assing a main event? If he was, cut him Starnes-style. That’s disrespectful, not just to Cote but to Dana and everyone who watched.
they are both good and respectful fighters and if spider had a opening he would of finished. cote could of won the first round he was the one coming foward and they both only got a few punches in. second round spider hands down won. if you dont like cote oh well because people who really know mma knows very few have a chin like him.
Why should he stick to his more exciting fight style? If he has a game plan that he thinks will work and is effective why not go with that? I don’t think Silva could care less if he’s labeled the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, just that he defends his title and that’s what he did.
Obviously Spider wasn’t taking the fight all that seriously because he didnt have to. To go into a main event and clown your opponent in that fashion just displayed his disdain for a inferior fighter with an inferior fighting style. If he respected Cote’s ability I think he would have tried to deal more punishment like he has in every other fight he’s been in. As for Cote he landed nothing serious nor was it likely that he would have the way the fight was going.
didn’t we already discuss this on an earlier thread..?
Haha T3chn3trium, I believe we did but there seems to be some “new” people to the site, so welcome “Oldman”, “Big Chief”..
I stated my opionions on the matter and someone most likely will lure into this conversation, but I’ve already done my part and come to an understanding with Dbiz soo all is good in my book… I wonder who is going to make me do play by play again hahaha
Silva is good, great, amazing.
But in my opinion I don’t thinks hes p4p the best, Its obvious Fedor is.
I think he is tied with GSP
anyways,
I thought Silva was being a bit dis-respectful, but he looked sharp, too bad it didn’t last
If Cote truly believed his chin and hands was so good he would of swung for the fences and if he felt like he was being man handled on the feet he could of went for a takedown and tried some ground and pound. As for Silva very lack luster fight kind of let this card down ,his walking around the ring to checking Cotes timing was OK he always takes a few seconds to check out his opponents speed and reach , but he seemed like he was lazy fighting like GSP was doing verus Serra just throwing a few hard combo’s now and then .. thinking thats all he needed to do to , this is what I watched in that main event. Not saying those combo’s weren’t hard just not enuff to finish Cote because of his chin and inbetween combo’s he gave him recovery time , this is not the Silva I payed to see in the main event, thank goodness for Sherk and Griffin + Junior Dos Santos for that amazing KO over a top contender in the HW division + a big thank you has to good out to Thiago Alves for that dominating performance over Josh Koscheck. All I got out of this card was Alves deserves his title shot now/ Dos Santos needs to let those fists fly verus Cheick Kongo/ Sherk and Maynard needs to get it on to see a great wrestling match. Was Silva disrespecting Cote maybe /maybe not but one thing you can say is Silva did have a lack of respect for Cote , because as a true champion your job is to finish.
the only let down of the main event was cote getting hurt.. there was still 2 1/2 rounds left i believe.. as we know that is a lot of time for anything to happen.. and i believe cote had a chance as long as he was still swinging.. it only takes a lucky punch.. As for the silva/liddell fight that is what i’ve been waiting for!
silva at 205 is very interesting and he will be pushed to his very best. hope it pans out for the fans
After watching the fight for the 5th time, I have to say he didn’t toy or disrespect Cote. If you watch the fight, Cote was chasing him and mimicking his moment throughout the first two rounds. Silva was starting to enforce his will as the fight was going on landing more shots and attacking more in the second round. I believe he did have a game plan and it was working but so many people have got so use to Anderson coming out and dominating the first couple of minutes that people didn’t think he was right.
It’s like when Floyd Mayweather fought Ricky Hatton, he wasn’t attacking and was just scoring a few points here and there but then the later rounds he picked Hatton apart and finally scored with the KO. Anderson was on his way of doing the same thing.
Silva is the F-ing KING! He is the MAN! He is the CHAMP! The match ended ****ty….sucks for EVERYONE!!! Fighters and FANS! Why would Silva be questioned because Cote got injured?
Probably because a select few disappointed fans got sand crammed up their vaginas which got irritated resulting in a bunch of cry babies looking for controversey to help their disabled mental states……or something like that. Perhaps the let down of not seeing a Silva KO just cruched the fans. It did sorta crush me. Still, why question his approach to the fight? He is Anderson Silva.
the only fans who should be realllllly pissed are those who shelled out the cash to see it live. i believe they would have the right to be upset.. i remember watching it then seeing him go down my jaw just dropped and thought damn that is the worst thing that could ever happen to anyone in a fight..
Thanks for the welcome fr702, will probably become a regular on this site. Its easy to be sunday morning analyst, the truth is due to an unfortunate accident the fight was stopped prematurely and we’ll never know. Fights turn around and change pace all the time, if Silva couldn’t find his opening in the first half who’s to say it wouldn’t have went either way by split decision, if Cote’s endurance would’ve held up which judging by his round 5 win over Jason Mcdonald in MFC 9 its probable. Why Cote didn’t attempt to go on the offensive at all though says alot for his strategy, which other than mimicking Silvas movements, appeared to be non-existent.
KOuch, again we stand side by side with our band of midgets. I’m suprised at the willingness of people to criticize a champion. No matter how he get’s it done…piss off. Trying to create drama.
I second the welcome to oldman and bigchief …always interested in worth while discussion!!!
Big Chief no worries, always up for debate and conversation….
Kouch& SurfingK5, I will join u with the band of midgets
Why be boring for no reason? If Silva had the option to either show-boat because he could afford to screw around and impose his will as he pleased OR knock Cote out, he would have knocked Cote out. I would think that he would want to look good instead of looking like a jackass. Silva DID try to win the fight because he got some good combos and knees in there but Cote kept coming back. This is consistent with what he said his game plan was, pick on any openings and look for a late round knockout. The knockout wasn’t going to happen early because Cote is tough. Silva coud have been more aggresive but there would have been more risk involved and Cote does have knockout power. Sure you can still debate this but Silva is the champ. He is an amazing athlete and I’m sure he prepares very well for his fights (inluding his strategy).
i said it in the fight result thread Anderson was baiting Cote to come in, it was very evident. Rashad did the same thing to Chuck. If anything it was a huge compliment to Patrick, cause hes basicly saying he respected Cotes strength so much he didnt just wanna charge in. Didnt pay that same respect to Franklin or Irvin. so everyone get over it.
Might as well make it a foursome with the band of midgets. lol
I am not pissed about anything, i was just clearly stating…Silva could have clearly ended the fight when he wanted to. I have watched the fight several times now and despite a few flurries from Silva, he was in defensive mode. I am not sure if Cote even landed a punch.
@Oldman I feel dumber for reading your commments. Thank you for that.
The longer that fight went, the better it was for Cote. That’s fact. Longer fight means more chances to hit “that punch.”
How could Silva finish the fight at will when he landed two had punches, a head kick and knee to the head in rapid succession and Cote didn’t blink? Those are shots that ended fights against Franklin (x2) and Leben.
What you end up saying, Fixxer, is that Silva was sandbagging the fight. And that is disrespectful to everyone, and not something a true champion does.
haha Ryan in NY. I get dumber listening to myself sometimes, scary really. I think that this discussion is pretty redundant. We are all agreeing on the same thing. These fighters respected eachother, anderson didn’t want to get clipped with cote’s big shot. We all knew it too, Cote’s only chance was the big shot. You don’t think anderson knew this?
If cote didn’t blow out his knew none of us would be having this discussion.
DBiz, maybe I’m reading your previous post wrong, but you bashed Smitty for comparing Cote to Starnes and now you are saying cut Silva Starnes-style if he was half-assing it??
