UFC 90 “Silva vs. Cote” Results: Silva Claims TKO Victory Following Cote Injury
UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva remained undefeated in the UFC on Saturday night, October 25th, defeating challenger Patrick Cote, though it was a finish nobody hoped for and no one saw coming.
The matchup headlined UFC 90 “Silva vs. Cote” at the sold-out Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois just outside of Chicago.
After a close first round that saw Silva do the most damage with a kick to the head in the final minute, the fight went to the ground in the second. Though Silva again did more damage Cote challenged Silva and went toe-to-toe with him on the feet.
But in the third round, Cote, who became the first fighter to make it past two rounds with Silva in the UFC, suffered a fight ending knee injury just 39-seconds into the frame and the bout was immediately halted, awarding the TKO victory to Silva.
Despite a close start to the fight, the crowd was displeased with both main event fighters and the anti-climactic finish. Silva showboated throughout the matchup, bowing to Cote at the end of the first round, offering to help him up off the ground, and playing games throughout, while Cote was booed for being unable to continue, despite doing his best to keep fighting.
After the fight, Silva apologized to the crowd for his performance and asked the fans not to boo, while Cote revealed that he likely tore his meniscus, re-aggravating a prior injury.
The disappointing main event finish dampened an otherwise solid night of fights that saw Thiago Alves top Josh Koscheck via unanimous decision, effectively assuring him of a welterweight title shot in his next bout, Gray Maynard wrestle his way to a unanimous decision victory over Rich Clementi, Junior Dos Santos upset heavyweight contender with a highlight reel uppercut knockout, and Sean Sherk and Tyson Griffin go toe-to-toe in an exciting bout to kick off the UFC 90 broadcast.
In preliminary action middleweight contender Thales Leites submitted Drew McFedries early in the opening round, Spencer Fisher earned “Submission of the Night” honors for his third-round triangle choke submission of Shannon Gugerty, Dan Miller bested Matt Horwich via unanimous decision, Hermes Franca topped Marcus Aurelio via unanimous decision, and Pete Sell took out Josh Burkman via unanimous decision.

I wish they would show the whole card. The main went sour and they cant give us the whole card?
Griffin vs. sherk was good.
gsp vs alves will be really exciting.
grey manard looks like a young matt hughes
patrick cote doesnt deserve an emediate rematch.
yes it was a joke, but anderson seemed really disrespectfull durring the fight.
They did air Leites’ submission of McFedries, which I don’t think would’ve been shown had the main event not ended the way it did. Don’t forget, another fight (likely Fisher-Gugerty) will be posted on UFC.com tomorrow, but I don’t think you missed much as most of the prelims weren’t all that exciting and went to decision.
SOrry, I’m callin “bull****”. Yes, I know these guys go through brutal training camps and injuries happen, but look at the odds- 3 months of running, running stairs, sparring, kicking the bag and…you blow a knee in the main event, having done something that nobody in the company has done yet- gone to the third round with this champ…the ufc has set themselves up for a huge rematch with a champ who’s said he’s retiring and has absolutely wasted everyone in his path.
Had he finished Cote in the first, who would be left…no one really, now they have at least on big fight left before Anderson leaves…
Beleive me, I hate the idea, but I just don’t buy it. The odds are just too much to take.
Just my opinion.
But I will still spend my $40 to watch the rematch…so I’m the sucker.
dissapointment
can we see an open weight tourney some day in the UFC 170-205
we will see if Silva is the best
I was just at the UFC 90 and as much as I love MMA—
THIS WAS RIGGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Silva acted like a clown & Cote dropped like Marie Osmond and nobody even touched him!!!!!
Glad I wasted my $$$
Maybe I can return the UFC undies I bought???
But hey I was the only chick who was able to hang with the marines for the full 70 seconds… Thats worth a T SHIRT!!!
The Silva/Cote fight was good, it looked like Silva was playing with him a little bit, but I think he also showed respect for Cote’s power. I look forward to seeing a rematch, but that’s a long way off with the injury. Even though I didn’t pick it to go that way anywhere, I had a suspicion that what happened in the Werdum fight, would be what happened in that fight. Griffin/Sherk was a good fight, and Alves/Kos was a pretty good fight. Some of the fights were a let down though. The pace of the Silva/Cote fight was little bit of a let down, and the way that it ended was a huge let down.
yeah Kimie, it was rigged, they wanted Cote to tear up his leg and be out for a year….have another.
Kris were you at the fight? I’m glad you point out the Fishrer fight. He seems to be a fan favorite. yet his fight they just show the end. It’s like seeing the very end of a good movie and then being told by a movie critic that you should go see the move because it is one of the best out. To me this is a flaw in the UFC’s ppv system. I mean 45 dollars is a lot of money for a couple of hours of entertainment. Especially these days with people losing their jobs left and right. It seems petty and greedy to charge loyal fans even more to watch the under card.
I can’t believe you you see Anderson Silva being disrespectful. How so? Is it becouse he doesn’t stand in front of Cotex and get smashed? Yeah, he probably could have destoyed your Canadian Preditor at will, but oh no, he was just to disrespectful for the likes of good ol’ Raffy boy!!!! Cotex better thank his lucky stars he even walked out of there alive! The Spida NEVER disrepects. I mean, how long you been watchin’? Old ACL injury my ass!
raffy is a moron thats the only person who can take a silva hit or knee and anyone who takes their first ufc fight against tito ortiz and goes the distance on four days notice is a beast. and thats at 205. silva was tryin to look good because after that knee he knew he could only win by decesion.lets see it again right away.cote won the first round, anderson was a little scared.thats awesome someone that has he has to stay away from.no disrespect to the spider, he would still beat any fighter more times than not.
yea it was rigged….whatever, who makes money on anderson winning, and im not thinking that dana and the ufc are trying to make silve cote like liddell ortiz….get over it, he blew out his knee….it happens
Hey Justin….
I would love to have another bottle or should I say cup of WATER since they do not let plastic bottles inside the arena…
Since I do not drink anything other then that….
So hmmmmm. Cote trains for months and months, all to look at the camera hoping for some badge of honor for making it into the third round w/ Silva, oh wait and RAISE three little taped fingers at that camera like the lil boy who just accomplished EXACTLY what he was there to do…. Hear the bell ring to start the third round, then drop because …..
IT WAS FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the fight was not rigged. but goldberg is f’n dumb for saying “Oh Cote took him farther than he has been taken.” What ever silva was just playing around he knew it was a joke. He could have taken him out at any point. In fact, I think he was being disrespectfull in some of his antics. but it was not rigged. But, with that said Cote still doesnt deserve a rematch. At least not right away. Man if anderson is really going to retire soon do you really want him to fight Cote again? Hell no you dont. We want Silva super fights if he is going to retire. All respect to Cote but come on he does not stand a chance in this match up. We want silva vs. jardine or vs. chuck or Gsp. I garruntee he would’nt be doing all that dancing and putting his arms down and trying to help the other fighter up, as to say “oh, do you need my help in this fight?”.
I’m down with an open weight tourney 170-205 ****, in a way its already happening. You got that rabid pitt-bull Alves fighting tonight at about 190-195 inside a 170lb fight! go figure!
What Bear $h*t they need to go again for free man october sucked for mma
knightboy624
did you see the Dan Henderson fight?
what does tito have to do with it?
umm raffy Cote did take him farther then any other fighter, he took him to the 3rd. and everyone needs to stop hating on Cote cause he ate that straight left that crumbled Irvin, he also took that wicked knee in the 1st, not to mention alot of those other shots that would have taken alot of guys out. Anderson did respect Cote and his power which is why he did what he did, the dancing was him trying to get Cote to come in. But Cote stuck to his guns and tried to be a counter puncher.
i dont know if you guys know this but dana wants to see knockouts and subs. thats why the bonuses are there, if he wanted to fix it he would make it a bigger name not a cote rematch. if you want to complain you should complain about grey maynard getting on main cards.boring, did you see how much better the sherk griffin fight was.
being a fellow Canadian of course I wanted Cote to win, but we all got to relaize the Anderson is a great fighter…. But after tonight I am thinking that he is getting way to ****y in his style…..if he were to really fight, with no showboating(i hate that) it would have been a first round fight…….but now we are going to have to wait till cote heals and is able to go back to the ring ………which by then might be to late to see( wasted $45 to see) I agree with all of the job loss I think that the ufc should show all fights, sometimes the undercards are better then the main events……..by the way the rest of this fight was great…..I wish that they were all this exiting
SPIDA vs. RUSH! He might as well make it three belts to retire to. Bye Bye Quebec!
Not worthy to be a UFC Fight Night, much less a PPV. I’m sure the numbers were bad for this one. I hope they made money at the gate and it was great promotion for the next 2 PPVs. UFC 91 and UFC 92 look great. This was all lower teer fighters, except Silva. Cote was like an 8th grader going to fight a prize fighter. His French/Canadian a$$ was soo out classed.
The only competitor Silva has left at 185lb is Robbie Lawler (ex-Elite XCs 185 champ). And Anderson will tear his head off. Maybe Ninja Rua or Benji Russell Radach, from the former Elite XC, can create some excitement.
I’d like to see a re-match with Yushin Okami. He was the last one to beat Silva, and fights in the UFC. Silva should avenge all his losses, like Chuck Liddel tried to do.
raffy your a moron who doent know anything about mma or how to spell. and chuck and jardine dont have chins and yes spider was more worried about cote than anybody else. tito was brought up because showing he can stand with anyone. lets not forget chris leban fought cote and only won by split dec. and cote should of won, fixes are by judges not injuries[matt hamill over the count and clay guida beat tyson griffin].
I would have to say… cote being in rehabilitation.. more silva at 205.. sounds more exciting than a rematch imo.. and NOOOOOOOOO cote needs to rehabiltiate fight a fight or two thennnn rematch. i agree with M3 october sucked… if randy and brock don’t pan out to be the match of the decade this will hurt UFC bad….
ninja and benji are not good. okami and robbie would be a good fight. sherk, alves, and kos are not exactly low teer fighters gonzo, but think what you want. they were all trying to finsh just didnt happen you moron.
Doent know how to spell.
Silva (and everyone watching the fight) knows that he could have finished that fight several times. His antics were entertaining but still I wanted to see a classic Anderson Silva KO (and it would have saved Cote’s knee). Silva looked like a kid on the playground in there, which is fine, but since the fight ended the way it did it kind of makes him look foolish.
Hey Kimie the fight was not rigged its called he blew his ACL…. in other words an injury. I would love to see a rematch between these two because Cote ate some hard shots in this fight and still didnt take him down because he was scared (or because he has no ground game but whatever) he stuck to what he said he was gonna do and right now i think Cote is the most dangerous opponent for Silva because he didnt get knocked out or anything and he knows what Silva has to offer in a rematch and i think the next fight between the two will be awesome. I am hopping on the Cote bandwagon this fight has given me a lot more respect for both fighters.
I didnt see sh&t, I was at a halloween party. I wanted to watch the Silva Vs. Cote fight, or should I say the Cote Vs. Silva fight. From what i am reading it sounds like I would have been very disappointed and pissed to waste my $ to watch a “rigged” fight. That was the very reason I stopped watching boxing. The Fertita famiy controls a lot of sh$t, even down here in Houston. And they better not screw up this. Because us fans are mafia too
just watched the dan miller matt horwich fight on ufc.com
good fight
but I want to see hermes
