Josh Thomson vs. Yves Edwards Announced for Strikeforce “Destruction”

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Oct 20, 2008

Josh ThomsonStrikeforce today announced that Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Josh Thomson (16-2) will make his first title defense against Yves Edwards (34-14-1) at Strikeforce “Destruction” on Friday, November 21st at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

The co-main event matchup is a rematch of an August 2004 meeting at UFC 49 that saw Edwards knockout Thomson with a highlight reel head kick.

Thomson, a winner of eight-straight, claimed the 155-pound title with a unanimous decision win over then-champion Gilbert Melendez in June and recently scored a first-round TKO of Ashe Bowman in a non-title bout at the Playboy Mansion in September.

Edwards has won three of his last four bouts, losing his most recent fight to KJ Noons via first-round TKO in June.

In the “Destruction” main event Renato “Babalu” Sobral challenges light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth for the 205-pound title. Also on the card, veteran Joe Riggs returns to the 170-pound welterweight division to battle Luke Stewart.

this is the same edwards who lost to Noons ….. so …. why does he get a title shot again ? i never heard of a guy losing a championship fight as the contender and getting another shot the next fight somewhere else .what about a gilbert melendez rematch instead ? the losing champion should get a crack at it before yves does .or is it just me ?

  2. Fr702 says:

Origanlly Thompson called out HellBoy, but with the DREAM champ most likely fighting on the NYE card in Japan HellBoy passed, soo I would assume Thompson probably asked to fight Yves to get back one of his two losses
It is rather rare to see such a thing tho I agree with you

  3. Justin says:

That is odd, but it could be like FR702 said, maybe he called him out, or maybe even though he lost his last fight, he is the best challenger they have available(?)

  4. knightboy624 says:

i dont think he should get another title shot but the first title shot was at 160pounds not 155. showtime has got two different organzations and they dont even have enough fighters for one.

  5. C-RO says:

    this guy better lose

  6. Fr702 says:

C-RO, out of your two comments u called a fighter a **** and said this guy better lose.. Just trolling or are u always thin in depth
Mind u I’m not attempting to pick on u nor talk down to you just stating your opionions are lacking knowledge perspective and depth
