Koscheck Replaces Sanchez Against Alves at UFC 90
The UFC has announced that welterweight contender Diego Sanchez has been forced to withdraw from his featured 170-pound matchup with Thiago Alves scheduled for October 25th at UFC 90 due to torn rib cartilage.
Fellow welterweight contender Josh Koscheck has been tapped to replace Sanchez and take on Alves in the main card bout.
“There is nothing worse than having a great fight and then having one of the fighters drop out at the last second,” said UFC President Dana White in the announcement. “But the one thing the UFC has proven time and time again is our ability to replace fights with ones as good as or better than the original fight, and we’ve done it again with the highly-ranked Josh Koscheck stepping up to replace Diego Sanchez against welterweight wrecking machine Thiago Alves. Hats off to Josh and Thiago, as not many fighters would agree to a matchup this tough on such short notice.”
A middleweight championship clash featuring 185-pound king Anderson Silva and challenger Patrick Cote headlines UFC 90.

Yoshida v Kos was good, Kos v Pitbull can be a very nice fight indeed… Only a few days away good addition to this card..
I dig it. Definitely like this match more. I hate Kos and think Alves has better striking to hurt him. Diego was an easier match for Alves based on power even though I feel Diego’s technical skill would have prevailed. Still, Kos is in store for a beatng in my opinion. Perhaps he got to eager.

I do indeed like this matchup more. Alves seems so powerful, and will not let Kos LNP. I also like Kos, but if the winner gets a title shot, I’d rather see Alves vs GSP than Kos/GSP 2
I’m with you guys, should be a good fight, and I too hope Kos gets the loss. Maybe Diego will now take his place at UFN 16, or Kos could still fight then as well, we’ll see.

Both have great stand up and ground games although Alves has a lot more KO power but i feel Kos will win a UD.
I’m torn. Do I detect a bit of a slap to Diego there? Seems a little bitter from Dana. Like Diego should suck it up and fight. I’ve not had torn rib cartlage. I know what broken rib feels like and it sucks and is not only painful but difficult to breathe.
It will be interesting to see if KOS can take Alves down and if he does will he be able to keep him down and or capitalize on something. This is a huge fight for him. Technically he needs to have improved a lot in order to win this. I think he has the athletic ability to have done that. I think to keep him on a positive track he has to win this. He’s 30 and not getting any younger. After the ass whoopin GSP gave him this may just crack him if he doesn’t win. The question is how much has he learned from having his ass handed to him by GSP. If he experience a moment of clarity he could pull this off.
Alves has faught higher quality and is just a freakin animal. I think he’s stronger and has the finishing abilities that KOS has not consistently shown.
I like this match up better than Alves v Sanchez. I had Alves all over Sanchez mostly because of strength and power. I don’t think Sanchez would have been able to match it. KOS v Alves…
I have to go with Alves in the second. KOS won’t be able to take him down and/or keep Alves down. KOS will get frustrated and make a mistake that Alves will make him pay for. Should be fun to watch. ALVES win TKO in the second.
I like how everyone is thinking of Kos vs GSP 2. It could be Kos vs BJ. I’m with gunslinger on this one. If Alves can’t get a standing KO Kos is going to get a win even if it goes to the judges.
good to see the ufc were quick to get a good replacement for sanchez in less than 2 weeks notice,unlike the machida/t silva fight were thay had much longer!if ufc89 was in the states,machida would still be fighting a top10 fighter.(sorry couldnt resist,just cause am 1 fight less for my money)

I think Alves will beat Kos as well. That doesn’t sound like a little bit of a dig at Diego, but I would bet that torn rib cartilage would seriously hamper your core strength…and MMA is very much about core strength. Its not great for your career to drop a fight due to injury, but losing badly because you fought injured wouldn’t help much either.

What ever the out come of these fights we will see a great fight some time next year Alves vs GSP/BJ or Kos GSP/BJ sound great to me.

I know where your coming from and i agree to certain degree but if i was Kos i’d be pretty pissed if i beat Alves and was told your not getting a title shot.

I think that if Kos wins, how he wins will determine his chances at a title shot. If he wins by UD or SD, he won’t get it, if he wins impressively with a sub or (T)KO (the earlier in the fight the better), then he may get that title shot. I think that if Alves wins it will be by stoppage, and he will be next inline, unless he fails to make weight again.

Ever since Dieago Sanchez lost his first two fights back to back, he’s come back to become a different kind of Animal. His Stand up has improved greatly, his JJ was always good, and his GnP went to a new level. Alves is a Pitbull, I think Sanchez woulda held his own.

JOHNBOY, I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of KOS but I don’t mind when he wins. He’s a hard charger and pretty straight forward. And, for that 30 and over crowd that enjoys fighting I love it when we get the upper hand on the youngsters!!!

I am a huge diego fan because he is from my home town but I belive Kos matches up better with Alves because of his power and stand up. If Kos pulls the same crap that he pulled with diego and just keeps his distance and counters that would be some BS and Kos Would not deserve to fight another top ranked WW. I still dont think Alves would of beat diego because I think Diego would have found some way to get the fight to the ground and keep him their but it just seems like kos matches up better with Alves’s style and would make for a better fight. I hope Alves ko’s kos in the first or kos wins and then Diego gets another stab at that chance to beat him up. watch out for the (505) because Albuquerque is full of fighters with lots of heart.

i was lookin forward to diego alves only cuz either would’ve been cool to see lose to gsp. i don’t hate kos as much as i used to, seems like he’s kinda matured over the last couple of fights. but i don’t really wanna see him and gsp again. and while i would like to see gsp vs alves, i just don’t like the guy after bein overweight and makin lame excuses. who goes into the biggest fight of their career overweight….. besides travis lutter? if alves wins, cool cuz i’d like to see that fight, but if he fails to make weight again they shouldn’t give him anymore 170 fights cuz he’s clearly too big for that class.
