Quick Hits: EliteXC News and Notes, UFC Fights for the Troops Moved, and More

By: Eric Shapiro | Oct 7, 2008
  • Light heavyweight free agent Tito Ortiz revealed during Saturday night’s broadcast of EliteXC “Heat” that he is close to signing with the promotion. Ortiz, however, will be unable to compete for at least six months due to a spinal fusion surgery .
  • EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw has apologized for his highly animated antics during Kimbo’s epic beat down.
  • “Heat” drew a strong 4.56 million viewers on Saturday night, which is roughly the same figure the inaugural CBS show brought in last May but is up nearly double over their summer show which didn’t feature Slice or female star Gina Carano.
  • EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio Silva will have his steroid hearing with the California State Athletic Commission on October 22nd.
  • Eddie Alvarez will challenge Nick Diaz for the vacant EliteXC lightweight title on November 8th in Reno, Nevada.
  • MMA Trainer Lloyd Irvin managed to disarm a robber who broke into his home and held his family, as well as guest Brandon Vera, hostage early Saturday morning. Luckily, no one was harmed.
  • Speaking of Vera, he is also already well under the 205 pound limit as his light heavyweight bout with Keith Jardine approaches.
  • The UFC will soon be casting on both sides of the pond for season 9 of The Ultimate Fighter, which will feature a US vs. UK format. Casting is set for the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London, England on October 20th and Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel in Chicago on October 27th.
  • Both Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar continue to deal with nagging injuries which may or may not jeopardize their UFC 91 meeting.
  • UFC Fight Night 16 “UFC Fights For The Troops” has been shifted from Fort Bragg to the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina due to size considerations.
  • It has been suggested that Ken Shamrock may have been looking for a way out of “Heat” regarding how exactly he elected to handle his cut.
  • The fighter known as War “Jon Koppenhaver” Machine provides an entertaining rant about his experience with Lance and Rashad Evans.
  • And finally, Seth Petruzelli is an “interesting ” character.

  1. johnboy says:

man i hope randy an lesnar can recover, that will suck big time if its called off.
well if thats true about rashard, hes a fuking prick and i hope forrest smashes him in, if its not true war machine is a prick but i still want forrest to smash rashard haha

  2. EL MATADOR24 says:

    MAN RASHARD IS A F N DICK
FORREST IS GOING TO **** HIM UP
    THATS A **** MOVE!

  3. Justin says:

Well, the move of the event bodes well for the rest of NC possibly being able to go.

  4. dbiz says:

I suspect there has been a lot more interest from the military set than the UFC ever expected. I am glad they are moving it to a larger place. I just hope they keep the closer sections packed with military and not celebrities.

  5. Justin says:

Agreed DBiz. Crown is still not that large of a venue, but probably a lot bigger than anything they have on base, and better suited.

  6. JustJoe says:

Liked the site better before the makeover.

  7. regoillin says:

Whoa whoa whoa. I was wondering why Eric called Seth Petruzelli an interesting character so I clicked on the link and WOW. I was expecting funny colored hair or something. Jesus you mean to tell me that not only did Kimbo get beat, he got beat by a “goofy homo.”

  8. yzfoxracing says:

    @JUSTJOE…
IM WITH YOU MAN. I LIKED IT BETTER BEFORE TOO

  9. huertarogerhuerta says:

yea seth petruzelli is interestin to say the least i was not expectin gay picture after gay picture. i wonder if those robbers had any idea that they were walkin into a sambo masters house dumbasses. i also wonder if when they ran screamin into the night he did that dance he does when he wins. randy vs lesner needs to happen its been a yr since ive seen randy whoop ass. as for rashad if u guys couldnt tell that the man was a bit of a snob ur blind. sure he sounds like a nice guy when theres a camera on him but i saw right through that and i dont have a problem wit it. im a rashad fan for wat hes done in the cage wateva he does outside is his buisness.

  10. JustJoe and YZFOXRACING - What’d you like better before? I’ll do my best to bring those features into the new design. This is definitely a work in progress. Thanks!

  11. 2girls2cups says:

i just posted a comment on the story about shamrock gettin paid, so maybe i’ll get a response there soon. but in case i don’t, how did this diaz thing go completely unchecked? i know there were stories about noons rejecting the fight which imo, he had every right to do considering he just whooped diaz (who i like btw). so the answer is strip noons of the belt and let diaz fight some other dude for it? what if that guy wins? then diaz has to fight someone else and he’ll have the belt? it’s not like an interim belt cuz noons is injured. this is completely obsurd and it doesn’t seem like alot of people are takin notice.

  12. JustJoe says:

Kris, maybe it’s just my eyes but too much white! lol Also, everything seems lumped together on the homepage. Probably just have to get used to it.

  13. drightler says:

Kris, It may be a small insignificant point, but I liked the “Comments” link being at the bottom of the story next to where there “Continue reading” link is. I find myself looking for the comment link at the bottom then remembering that it is at the top. And the comment link doesn’t really pop out at you anymore. It’s almost hidden… just blends in too much.

  14. JustJoe and drightler - Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As I said before this is an ongoing work-in-progress and I’ll experiment with moving some of the elements around and eliminating some of the white to improve the functionality and look of the site.

  15. gunslinger says:

i liked the top contributor feature that was cool and a daily poll would be cool

  16. E-ROC says:

Why continue fighting when you have spinal fusion surgery? I know that pro wrestlers get this type of surgery all the time after banging their heads and back on the canvas. For Tito, its different. All it takes one kick and he’ll be done like Bret Hart. ‘Ol well.

I hope Lesnar and Couture can make it to their fight. They have to make it!

  17. gunslinger says:

yes i would be dissapointed to if couture and lesnar had to cancel but then again the ufc is best under pressure and they would most likely somehow pull a dream fight out of no where to replace it

  18. Ethan says:

As far as Rashad goes, maybe he is a jerk, but he’s earned it. No that doesn’t make it right but it is what it is. My beef here is with the idiot Jon Koppen - douche. I mean War - douche. Can we PLEASE stop hearing from this loser??? Please?

  19. JustJoe says:

i agree with Drightler about stuff blending in. Honestly, the site reminds me of junkie right now, and that’s why I liked this site. (still do lol), Just sayin… Maybe a red background or grey?

  20. I can definitely add a background, that’s not a problem and is actually a rather simple modification. Functionality took priority over aestetics for the initial release of the new design, though as we progress I’ll be sure to play around with the theme and “pretty it up” to make it look better and be easier to read and interact with.

Thanks for your input guys, I really appreciate it. Be sure to keep it coming either in the comments or email your thoughts and suggestions to me at mmafrenzy [AT] gmail.com.

  21. Justin says:

I like the new site a lot, though I do recognize there is always room for improvement. I personally don’t mind the color scheme, but I’m a less is more kind of person. Whatever you do change the color scheme to, make sure its easy to read, that’s my only request. I hate going on a webpage/blog/myspace where I have to highlight the text to be able to read it without straining my eyes.

  22. Daddy Lupo says:

hahaha Seth Petruzelli is really the man of the year ! The guy can beat Kimbo Slice and can be found in homo night club right after !

  23. ucares? says:

Cant wait for the alvarez /diaz fight . Someone’s getting knocked out without a question . I like both fighters and wont pick a side on this one …… probably one of the better fights for elite on the horizon .the whole KJ thing is done and they will have a champ who will be an exciting fighter to watch . Ishida vs Diaz or alvarez is another potential fight. So the co-promo’s with DREAM /Strikeforce and Affliction may work out .Affliction should be more of afight finder/sponsor rather than an independant org in itself . Sell clothes , hype fights with their wicked commercials pay big names to fight a big fight on CBS and things will be better for all .

    Picture this CBS card

    F shamrock vs Ortiz
    Kimbo vs Bob Sapp
    Carano vs cyborg
    Baroni vs Paul daley
    A feature YOUNG GUNS fight

    Id watch

  24. gunslinger says:

i dont really believe what war is saying he lies all the time …i dont see rashad doing that and war machine is the one who is the jerk..what an freakin gay anarchist douche…..war rashad!

  25. timcat says:

Elite XC is done. Their cow is out to pasture. Their VP is a biased piece of crap who fixes fights. Koppenhaver has a lot of room to talk about people being d!cks, didn’t he just blow the chance of a lifetime? Nate Quarry had the same surgery that Tito is going to have, so Tito will be fine. The thugs that broke into Irvins home must’ve got the shock of their lives, thats funny.

  26. Justin says:

I’m not sure that already being “well under” the 205lb limit for the fight with Jardine is a good idea. Jardine is probably walking around at at least 215. Its good that Vera has re focused, but he’s putting himself at a disadvantage by not getting bigger and cutting some weight for the weigh in.

  27. kouch says:

Dude….Seth……dude…..WTF and WHY?!? Dude…..not even a funny joke…. That picture f-ed up my brain. I cannot even picture Carano and Leah in my head right now as hard as I am trying too. I need happy thoughts. Seth is……well…..a picture is worth a thousand words.

  28. kouch says:

    Ucares,

You are no Joe Silva sir.

  29. ucares? says:

You are way to pro UFC KOuch ….. If they were done they would have folded up the tent by now . I know that you like to back the biggest promotion as a safe risk to your ego , but sometimes other people just like to see cool fights . There would be nothing wrong with the fights I picked with the talent available .

Sounds to me your Lesnar - couture fight will more than likely be cancelled due to BOTH of them being hurt . So dont be surprised if your UFC lets you down at the last minute after you pay all the money to see it …. At least the elite fights are free.

  30. dbiz says:

Free but crappy isn’t necessarily better than not free but watchable.

Furthermore….Kimbo v. Bob Sapp? Haven’t we already watched enough bum fights? Carano doesn’t stand a chance against cyborg. Baroni is never worth watching. Ortiz needs to just give up. He’s a has-been (and a barely-was at that). 20% of his UFC wins were against Ken Shamrock, for crying out loud. His last non-Shamrock, non-split decision victory was in 2004.

Sure, Randy-Lesnar may not happen. But there are other good fights on that card. And the UFC has enough talent to put something else together. You just lined up the meat of the EXC roster and couldn’t even come up with a BAD UFN card.

That’s what he meant by you are no Joe Silva. Silva makes good fights. You just skimmed the top layer off a scummy pond and lined it up.
