Fedor Not Fighting on New Year’s Eve, Won’t Fight Barnett at “Day of Reckoning”

By: Kris Karkoski | Oct 6, 2008

Fedor Emelianenko Submits Tim SylviaFedor Emelianenko, the world’s near-consensus top heavyweight and among the planet’s best pound-for-pound fighters, will not be competing on New Year’s Eve and will also not meet Josh Barnett early next year at Affliction’s second event.

Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio recently alerted MMA Junkie of the status of the promotion’s top fighter.

“I’ve been told actually 100 percent that he is not fighting on New Year’s Eve,” said Atencio. “[The members of Emelianenko's management team] are our partners. We have extended his contract, and that’s where we’re at. I spoke with [Emelianenko's managers] the other day, and they said he is not fighting. So that’s just rumors.”

Affliction’s second event, “Day of Reckoning”, was scheduled to take place on October 11 in Las Vegas but was rescheduled last month, reportedly due to low ticket sales. The event was tentatively rescheduled for January 17th in Anaheim, California but is now expected to take place on another date in early-2009 at a location to-be-determined.

Rumors and reports suggested that Emelianenko would meet Barnett, another of the promotion’s top heavyweights, in the “Day of Reckoning” main event but that fight is now not expected to take place after Barnett turned the fight down.

Emelianenko, who has fought on New Year’s Eve for five-straight years beginning in 2003, could instead meet former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski, who defeated Roy Nelson in primetime at EliteXC “Heat” on Saturday, in the “Day of Reckoning” main event.

    Dbiz,

LOL…..Holy KJ Noons…..very good. How the F does Affliction have the BEST fighter in the world and cannot get a f-ing match set up and done? I am getting frustrated. I hate Affliction and need my Fedor fix!! Give me more Fedor man…..

  • Daddy Lupo said:

Man Fedor should fight every ****ing month. I hate and love the fact that he destroy his opponent really quick because its always awesome but after I have to wait 4-5 months for another 38 seconds of real madness.

  • Dannyboy said:

Kouch you hate Affliction, but they brought us Fedor. Yet you love Fedor and he won’t fight for UFC. What’s a man in your spot to do? I say go with self implosion while surrounded by 20 midgets in black robes with candles.

Barnett is a p**sy for not taking this fight. I am very disappointed in him.

On the bright side…Arlovski may be next!

  • ucares? said:

Sounds to me like Fedor isnt wanting help AFFLICION either . And it doesnt make sense that Barnett wouldnt take a title shot ….. why bother fighting then if you dont want to be a champion . I know they are friends but that shouldnt make them not fight . “we dont want to fight each other ” is no excuse and they should have a penalty to pay for backing out .The fans lose in the end …….

it would appear that the baby faced assassin is more baby then assassin. so u got fedor for a fight wit no opponent and its gonna b pushed back even further from the 17th? man affliction u cant even do good enough as a promotion for the ufc to want to buy u out

  • justin said:

Maybe Barnett just likes his face in its current configuration and doesn’t want it rearranged, therefore he turned down this fight. Its really disappointing that we don’t get to see more of Fedor. I wonder when we’ll get to see Aleksander fight again.

  • Dannyboy said:

Excellent statement huertarogerhuerta, the baby faced assassin is now just a baby. Good stuff!

Justin, I look forward to seeing Aleksander as well. He’s the scruffy, biker bar, trouble causing version of Fedor. While he got his head kicked in by Cro Cop, he’s still got plenty of fight in him. He’s a better version of Tim Silvia. Same body type but Aleksander is more exciting to watch.

YouTube has some great fights with Aleksander and I’m not really sure why the law allows them to be aired on there. Ah well, free is good!

  • Dannyboy said:

One point for Kris, the website genius:

You said we’d be able to get in touch with other MMAFrenzy users, is that in the next round of updates? Or am I missing something?

As always, great, great work on the site!

  • Chariman395 said:

Barnett claims he won’t fight Fedor because Affliction are not offering him enough dollar$ to make it worth his while. Money talk$!

  • justin said:

    Dannyboy,
In regards to the law allowing videos on YouTube, basically what a lot of the stuff on YouTube boils down to is that whoever actually owns the rights to the material (UFC, PRIDE FC, CBS/Viacom, Shonen Jump, Viz Media, whatever) has to say something to YouTube. If said owner formally requests that the video be removed, YouTube will take it down. In fact I think it is an official policy that anything that is the property of CBS/Viacom is not allowed to be posted on YouTube because they have made such a big deal to YouTube about it. The FBI is too busy arresting college students for downloading songs/movies for free to worry about who’s posting on YouTube.

BTW way to link to youtube, by not actually linking to youtube and instead linking to your politically motivated blog, although I was not fooled by this link, it is disingenuous.

1st off justin nice ichigo avatar. 2nd i thought aleksander had herpes or hep c and he couldnt fight anymore? didnt diego almost hafta retire for the same thing?

  • justin said:

This would have been a more appropriate link in that situation.

  • Dannyboy said:

    Justin,

Well to be fair it was a youtube based entry.

Thanks for the info, though. I always wondered how items got ‘banned’ and the like.

So are you of the opinion that UFC has a YouTube staffer that searches the site to ensure no UFC material is uploaded? And if it is, they are on it like stink on sh*t?

  • Dannyboy said:

Well pooh, I was hoping my Gravatar pic would show up. Am I missing something? I’ve signed up and added the pic but perhaps I need to do something on this site to allow it to show? Any help would be great, thanks!

  • justin said:

    huertarogerhuerat,
Diego (Sanchez?) had a staph infection. This is curable with antibiotics and time. I haven’t heard anything about Aleksander having anything, I did a google search to try to find anything out before posting that and didn’t find anything about upcoming fights, or reasons he is not fighting. He was scheduled to fight at Affliction: Banned, but it seems that did not take place, I don’t know why.

Also, thanks for the Avatar comment.

  • Dannyboy said:

Okay nevermind it just showed up for some reason. Sheesh, sorry for the spam everyone.

  • Dannyboy said:

Sanchez is right, Justin. I also thought it was completely unfair that Aleksander was amidst Hepatitis scandals when it wasn’t the case, a while back. I may have missed the retraction, but wasn’t Aleksander cleared of his supposed Hepatitis infection? Kind of a shady thing to do to someone who just didn’t have the paperwork handy.

  • justin said:

    Dannyboy,
I think your Gravatar has shown up now. And they may have someone to do that, or they may just have a standing agreement with YouTube. I could be wrong about it having to be someone officially linked to the company.

  • Dannyboy said:

Oh and before I hear it from everyone, yes I look like a Douchebag. I was lucky enough to find a beautiful woman who prefers Douche over Vinegar & Water. :) It probably helps that I make decent money too. haha

  • justin said:

hmmm…as a result of links in my last comment, it is awaiting moderation, hopefully Kris will get it up soon.

i kno it ended up bein staph for diego but i remember the rumor that he wasnt gonna fight kos cuz he had hepititas.
“UFC President Dana White dropped that bomb today, unveiling that the 25-year-old welterweight contender was battling a mysterious illness prior to UFC 69 that was — at one point — diagnosed as hepatitis C.”

and this is the last i heard bout the aleksander hep b situation

“A source close to the situation…explained that the blood tests came back right before Aleks and Buentello were scheduled to weigh in and that is why there was so much confusion around the stage and why the fighters did not weigh in. Gary Goodridge ended up stepping up on extremely short notice and filling in for the Russian heavyweight.

The tests were positive for Hepatitis B which resulted in the CSAC cancelling the fight.”

  • timcat said:

Fedor is saving himself for the Couture fight for UFC 100 imo.

  • huertarogerhuerta said:

diego i kno it turned out to b staph but i dont remember hearin bout aleks not havin hep b

  • M3 said:

That sucks man Affliction better do something here i hope they dont try and stop Fedor Emelianenko from fighting in DREAM he was there at Dream 6 not fighting but more of a things to come sort of deal.
i think he should fight Alistair Overeem that would be a good fight
and if the ufc was not so tight on there fighter contracts and actually pay what he’s worth then they would have Fedor, but they dont! but its only a matter of time till the ufc smarts up

  • ucares? said:

Just on a GSP note here ……. I want him to fight Penn next but if there was a different opponent awaiting it would be yoshida . yoshida is a tough son of a b!tch and may have the stuff to beat them both .He obviously scared the crap out of karo .

  • huertarogerhuerta said:

karo wasnt scared. joe rogan said he needed surgery awhile ago and neva got it so now when he flexs his leg it makes a divet in his hamstring. but i believe yoshida is schedualed to fight kos for the troops. should b a good test for both fighters. as for him fightin gsp hes got a long way to go cuz theres a certain pitbull whos standin in the way of that

    M3 said:

and if the ufc was not so tight on there fighter contracts and actually pay what he’s worth then they would have Fedor, but they dont! but its only a matter of time till the ufc smarts up

Yeah, because 300-500K per fight for the top draws is really unfair. Perhaps Fedor is just overly greedy and should have gone for boxing to make his unwarranted salary demands. I mean, word is he asked 2 million for the Randy fight from the UFC. Is he a good fighter? Hell yes. Is he enough of a draw to shell out 2 mill for a single fight when he won’t commit to NOT fight somewhere else? Never in a million years.

  • justin said:

also RE: and if the ufc was not so tight on there fighter contracts and actually pay what he’s worth then they would have Fedor, but they dont! but its only a matter of time till the ufc smarts up

The top draws get 300-500k guaranteed for showing up, that is doubled as a win bonus, if they win (I think). Plus 30-60k if they are KO, Sub, or Fight of the night. Then they also get a percentage of the gate, and a percentage of PPV buys, so in the end, Chuck Liddell, with a win, even though he only gets “500k” for a fight can actually make +2mil for a win. Then you account for the fact that UFC now has a contract with JC Penny for merchandising, which the fighters are allowed to sign into. This contract is also non exclusive, therefore a UFC fighter can get paid for having his face/name on a shirt sold at JC Penny, and still get paid to have his face/name on a shirt for another brand (Tapout, One More Round, American Fighter, etc) as long as they do not require an exclusive contract. Also, the UFC is working on non-exclusive merchandising deals for fighters involving action figures. Not to mention guys will probably get something for being in the upcoming game.

Who are Fedors managers? It seems like he is managed by Don King of the USSR. I heard that when Dana tried to get Fedor all attempts were silenced by his mangagers. Sounds like Fedor needs to speak for himself for a change. Maybe Russia needs Fedor take over another ex soviet union country

  • Dietrich said:

    Time to channel Oliver Stone…
They are broke…and the writing is on the wall…They are holding/protecting Fedor with an extended contract to allow Dana time to have this 4 man tourney which has a byproduct of building Fedor’s worth. When there is “only one”(Thank you Highlander for putting that into the English lexicon) foe Zuffa has to make the purchase/deal of/with (XC/Affliction/Fedor’s contract ) for a decent price. Any taker’s

B.T.W. It was more fun last time doing this with IF’s

  • dbiz said:

Usually once you’re show-up is around 250k, they don’t pay a win bonus and if they do it isn’t doubled. I suspect Liddell hasn’t gotten a win bonus in a couple years. And not just because he’s been losing.

Fedor’s biggest gripe (besides money, I think) is that the UFC wouldn’t do a one-fight deal and they won’t allow him to fight for other promotions while he’s under contract.

Some will say it’s because they want to be the only ones profiting off his image but it goes beyond that. They don’t want him doing his poor punch technique and (yet again) breaking bones in his hand in a fight in Japan while he’s under contract with them. And I can not fault them for that.

In regards to the poor punching technique I referenced….he doesn’t land punches straight on, making it more likely his metacarpals will snap (especially if he still doesn’t tape under the gloves) - Try to break a toothpick by squeezing straight down vs a little sideways pressure in the middle. Then see the broken hand in the Sylvia fight and the reason he went for the back rather than pounding.

  • justin said:

    DBiz,
Thanks for clearing up the win bonus thing, I know a lot of the other guys get them. The fact still remains that whenever the whole Couture contract dispute came about I read where Liddell was making +2 mil for his fights as the highest paid fighter in the UFC, and Randy was making 1-1.5mil per fight as the second highest paid fighter in the UFC. Again, that doesn’t account for the money he makes in endorsements and what not, just what the UFC writes him a check for.

  • gunslinger said:

affliction claims they let fighters fight…but they dont there just as controling as the ufc i have loved watching th japan new years eve shows for ever and fedor always fights on them i officially hate affliction even more i will now have nothing to do with them unless maynard is on the card

No problem, just wanted to make sure everyone was aware that it’s the system filtering the comments with links out. I generally don’t mind the sharing of relevant links but it might take a few hours before I get around to approving them, that’s all.

  • dbiz said:

Hey Kris, have you given any thought to letting some of the trustworthy, longer-term guys approve posts taht are flagged as possibly spam (i.e. lots o links)? This could actually have a twofold benefit for the site.

It would lessen the burden on you, especially as the site grows in popularity and you do more back-end work. It would also reward those who have handled themselves right for long periods of time and make it feel more like “their” site, you know?

Just an idea. I gave up running forums when development/moderation got to be too much work and not enough fun. Hate to see you burn out at all the same way.

  • dbiz said:

Not lobbying either. I’m neither long term nor trustworthy… heh.

Fade-or is not capitalizing on his stay here in the US . he needs to be on display in the best way possible and AFFLICTION is not it . Sure he is good now , but time passes all athletes at some point or another .If he came out swinging like he did against sylvia there are a few guys who could beat him to the punch and flatten him .even a guy like tyson hasa chance if the standup game was how they opened . matt lindland almost had him in bodog…… and he is a middleweight by nature .so as far as him being unbeatable , he cant begin to believe this or it will result in a vicious KO highlight of a once invincible guy and he doesnt want to be the next “Fedor Slice”

Dannyboy - Are you noticing the text issues on a specific post, sporadically, or all the time? I’ll try to troubleshoot it to see if we can’t figure out what’s causing it so I can get rid of it.

I just had some issues with the text not wrapping properly on the homepage in Internet Explorer (I typically use Firefox) but a refresh got rid of it and I can’t seem to replicate it yet.

Any info you can give me helps. Thanks!

Speaking of getting bigger and bigger if you want a sneak peak of one of the features we’ve got coming up check out northcarolina.mmafrenzy.com. It’s not quite finished yet but will be live tomorrow afternoon with a series of brief interviews with fighters competing on this weekends Carolina Crown card in Raleigh.

This is our very first “local” blog but in the coming months I’m hoping to have one for every state as well as sites for the major MMA countries outside of the US including the UK, Japan, and the like.

Thanks for reading the site everyone!

Yeah well Fedor would mess anyone up, plus arlovski versus fedor is so much better for business, i mean barnett will have to man up and not pull a brandon vera, but until then andrei is a great fight, also i think gonzaga would be great for the affliction organization, the ufc is putting his talent to waste.

FR702, I would check some of your browser options. If you want to hit me off this board, onecheapgeek at gmail dot com

While there are some decent options out there to create a mobile site, most phones are moving towards full featured browsers and I do not want to remove functionality for those users, which would almost certainly happen if I introduced a mobile version of the site. I’ll definitely look into it to see if there’s a suitable option for creating a mobile friendly site, though right now my priority is on tweaking the main site design since that’s where nearly all our traffic comes from.

Any fight promotion that Andrei Arlovski on it, will have my attention and money. I am a die hard Arlovski fan, and I hope that this fight does happen. I believe Arlovski is back on his game, and Fedor is going to be an explosive fight. Probably the hardest fighter that Arlovski fought in a long time.
