Thiago Silva vs. Lyoto Machida Rescheduled For UFC 93
Thiago Silva and Lyoto Machida (13-0), who were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 89 in October, will instead fight at UFC 93 on January 31st in Las Vegas, according to Tatame.
Silva was forced to withdraw from the October matchup earlier this month after suffering a back injury while training for the fight. After a search for a new opponent turned up empty Machida was removed from the card and the pair will now clash at UFC 93 in a marquee light heavyweight bout.
Silva holds an undefeated 13-0 record overall including a 4-0 mark in the UFC with victories over James Irvin, Tomasz Drwal, Houston Alexander, and Antonio Mendes.
Machida too is undefeated with a 13-0 record, including five wins in the octagon over Sam Hoger, David Heath, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, and Tito Ortiz.
UFC 93 will be headlined by UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre against UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn.

Nice, I hope Silva pounds him out. I don’t like machida’s style. He needs to hang in the pocket and fight a little.
NOW THIS IS DEF GOING TO BE FUN!!!
i would rather see machida fight someone better…t silva is giving too much credit! and machida def has to defeat someone better in order to get a title shot.. imo…
should be a good fight!
is *given
BJ v GSP “superfight”, plus Machida v Thiago “someones O must go” fight pretty nice…. The end of January is going to be fun forsure
@BW, why must Machida “stay in the pocket” more, this isn’t a boxing match?
Here is a question for anyone, both the UFC and Affliction/GoldenBoy/EliteXC/ProElite/ Showtime are having events in January…. Now the A/GB/EXC/PE/ST event may or maynot have Fedor on it, might have Josh Barnett AA Lil Nog Matt Lindland, perhaps even Ninja Rua, Jake Sheilds Kimbo? And they are going to have a boxing match… Or the event mightnot ever happen, the UFC has BJ Penn v GSP, Machida v Silva already slated to fight one another, question is why do people complain about the UFC not putting on the best events or this card is weak and stuff like that….. Look at all the cards of every org has, who consistantly puts on the best fights every month without a hitch… Why the hate for the UFC? Is it because they are successful? (I’m not a UFC “hugger” and I do enjoy other org’s just that I’ve read in other places the disapointment with UFC and their “weak” cards, and I don’t get it)
who says the ufc dont have the best cards? i know people said that affliction banned had the best heavy wieght card ever and they might be right but the reason people have a prob with the ufc is danna white is a very unlikable person, everyone hates the best, and the fighter pay is very unacceptable.
I’m a “UFC HUGGER” and have been since it’s beginning… I also just love to fight and watch fights…
The only explaination is ignorance FR702. People would rather b**ch about something for one reason or another than to be thankful for what they have.
There isnt gonna be a superfight with BJ and GSP ..
GSP is gonna roll right thru him .
i really hope silva beat machida, i cant stand the way he fights its smart as hell but if i wanted to see smart ide watch i chess match,
Dr Doom BJ is guna roll right thru GSP no one can touch BJ he’s the f*ckin man
im a huge GSP fan, but at the same time, no one has ever rolled thru penn…
Dr Doom, I agree. GSP will handle BJ.
BJ fan here…in more ways than one come to think of it!
Doom you are wrong yet that is just my opionion even tho I think BJ Penn will win I also believe that neither one is going to “roll” right threw the other
@New age confucious & Surfingk5 thx for giving you opionions on my question cheers
IMO I think its a risk for Machida to be on the high profile card…
cheers mate
@Dietrich why do u think its a risk for Machida to be on a high profile card?
Zuffa is doing it because he is an eventual title challenger and they need to market him but the problem is it’s the Super Bowl card and unless he pulls off a stunner of a victory or blazes out in equally high fashion he could hurt more ticket sales in Vegas(which looks to be in the toilet right now) than he would ever win over with his method.
i dont know who to choose because they are so evenly matched up penn and GSP i mean not Machida and Silva but both of them will be good fights.
I think that people hate the UFC for the same reason that people hate the Yankees or the Patriots. Its absolutely because they’re successful. People think “Hey they’re too successful, I want someone else to do well for a change.”
New age confucius,
In regards to the pay they give their fighters being unacceptable, its a lot better than it is in many other organizations. Also, the fighters don’t only have income from the UFC, they get paid to go out there and fight someone with a big “Condomdepot.com” across their butt, or whatever the sponsor may be. That principal works the same as “Home Depot” being on the front of Tony Stewart’s race car. Or Vodafone on Lewis Hamilton’s helmet.
Good point Justin I think the same
Machida wins this, the guy can fight and he can submit you on the ground. So what if he’s boring, I thought you fight to win and he wins. BJ and GSP is goning to be a war. No one rolls over either guy, thats just wrong. Their first fight could of gone either way imo. George might out wrestle BJ but he probably don’t want to be on the mat very long with the BJJ master. We get five rounds this time. Hope BJ trains this time and gets in shape because GSP is a cardio freak.
Everybody hate the UFC because they are the bar so to speak. The level of their production, unmatched imo, they don’t need Megadeth to put buts in the seats, or dancing girls on the ramp to garner male intrest. It’s the fights we all watch. Kimbo/ Shamrock would never Main Event over a Shields title fight ever in the UFC. The marketing in the other organizations drives me crazy sometimes. Let the fights and the fighters sell your product.
@FR702, because his fighting style is boring. Yeah he wins fights, but it is a snooze fest. I would like to see him risk taking a little more damage to give out a little more damage. I would love to see how he handles a little adversity. AA fights a couple safe fights and everyone got down on him, which they should, but machida is elusive. Whatever, I know he is talented and I would like to see him mix it up more. Give me my moneys worth and go out and get after it. Watching machida is like watching a jab fest, imo
Why does everyone always insist it’s on Machida to change the way he does things? The way I see it, it’s on his opponent to force Machida out of his comfort zone. It’s just like any other sport. Everyone has a game plan that they feel gives them the best chance to win. It’s the responsibility of the opponent to make them change that game plan. When the Patriots beat the Rams for their first Super Bowl, they totally altered the Rams’ game plan. Same thing when the Giants beat the Patriots last year. Quit hating on Machida because no one else is smart enough or daring enough to try something to shake up his game. I think someone like Wanderlei Silva who should be willing to take a few shots to close with Machida and corner him would stand a chance. You don’t have to be a chess master to find a counter for Machida’s one strategy.
The problem is, machida runs to fast. He stick and moves to well. Fighting is to win no doubt, but it is also to entertain, and that why we pay money to watch. I would rather watch someone whogoes out there to out on a show for the fans, like wandi. Win or lose you will be entertained. Its hard to get excited about machida. I already know what he is going to do. He’s going to jab kick and move away. Yet not to get hit, jab and kick a little more and then some more running. Boring. In pride, the dude would have held the record for yellow cards.
Sorry, my blackberry enters in the words it likes sometimes, not what I intend to write. Need to proof read befor I submit.
@ BW, to me Machida is exciting, at times he can be “elusive” and such just because Tito couldn’t take him down and Soku got choked ot don’t be mad Lyoto just because he seems to be a step ahead of his competiton… I also believe he needs to fight stiffer comp…. But only time will tell I guess
As far as the BlackBerry thing make it go to single type text that’s what I have been doin with mine cheers
Totally agree FR702. I love the unorthidox style. Machida is a great example of MMA’s evolution. Huge Machida fan
Did anyone else catch that in the article? They said it’s going to be a heavyweight bout. Machida’s jumping up a class?
Josh V - It was supposed to read “light heavyweight”. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the heads up.
@SurfingK5, I’m agree with your assesment… I’m not like the biggest Machida fan, I am a fan nevertheless and I respect his style of fighting, I do believe he should fight a “top LHW” soon yet those individuals do seem to be on cards already, iam interested on the Thiago fight, and Thiago will make Lyoto be more agrressive or perhaps his great way of not taking any punishment will show the nay sayers the his style is not avoiding fighting its fighting with intellegence and percise skill
Machida is an intelligent fighter yet he has no entertainment value. He has the personality of microwaved eggs and his constant back pedalling turns a lot of fans off. He is afraid to get hit. Silva should make it his primary goal to keep him on his back and scratch his pretty little face with some well placed elbows. That’s what I’m hoping for.
no doubt about it machida has skill and is very smart the way he fights, but what people are trying to say is that he is boreing to watch, people seem to be reacting like were saying he has no mma skills, people no the guy has skills they’d just like to see him put it all on the line every once an a while. i belive silva will kick his ass anyway.
