Anderson Silva: I’ll Retire Next Year

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Sep 23, 2008

Anderson Silva Defeats James IrvinReigning UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva could be looking to call it quits as early as next year, according to a report from intheguard.tv:

“…Anderson Silva was recently interviewed by Brazilian cable channel SporTV. The TV show [Sensei SporTV], featuring Spider, will air on September 27, but the editors released a shocking excerpt from the interview with Silva, when the champion spoke on his retirement from MMA:

I’ll retire next year, I already gave my all. I don’t need to prove anything for anyone and within one year I’ll put my gloves aside.

Ana Hissa, the editor who contacted us with this breaking news, was emphatic, saying that Silva mentioned retirement several times. “

Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, was quick to downplay an early retirement from the 185-pound champ in a recent chat with MMAJunkie.com:

“Anderson’s goal is to retire when he is 35,” said Soares. “He still has six fights on his contract, and he doesn’t turn 35 for another 18 months. I know he will finish his six fights before he considers hanging up his gloves.”

So what do we all think? Will Silva really try to go out while on top? Or is The Spider merely suffering from the classic Randy Couture syndrome? Only time will tell.

let him retire better chance of the count becomeing champ hahahaha, hope he does have 6 more fights and i hope he gets knocked out bad f-u silva ur not bigger then the sport so f-u

  2. Us and Chuck says:

Rumour has it he is ducking Bisping big time Anderson apparently crapped himself after seeing Mikey kill Jason Day according to Proelite.com he crapped his favourite Spongebob Squarepants boxers (they had Mr Krabs on them FYI).

  3. johnboy says:

thats funny! see u have got a sence of humor shame we can say that about some people… COFF kelvin COFF COFF

  4. Brandon says:

now why would anderson be scared of bisping?

  5. regoillin says:

He still has something to prove. Is he really the terminator of MMA? Can he get the LHW title too? I guess he still has six fights left though so we’ll see. And what about when the next big name comes around, will it be a Gracie-Hughes type of situation? 6 fights is a long time and a lot of potential losses though. Hopefully he’ll change his mind. He will have to fight Bisping before he retires. Personally I think Bisping will take him out.

  6. timcat says:

It’s not gonna happen. Zuffa will give him any amount he wants. As for Bisping, he stands no chance against Silva, EVER!

  7. FR702 says:

    @JohnBoy~ hahahaha

i dont believe it personally why would he retire, no one is going to beat him (unless its the super SERRAPUNCH type thing) soo why would he retire unless to fight Roy Jones JR but whatever i just dont get it, hell Randy retired and………..?

  8. Doverboy says:

silva is the best in his weight-class he already prove that and bisbing cant even put his name up there with mat hamil sense he won that fight n.e way england judges cant see,but we’ll see when Anderson is on top

  9. FR702 says:

Bisbing actually has to get past Leben (which wont be easy no matter what JohnBoy says), and he simply isnt ready to be in the cage with Silva bottom line lets be realistic Silva destroyed Leben (did Silva break a sweat?), and dominated Hendo and finished him on the ground none the less i dont even think Bisbing is ready for Hendo let alone finish him
sorry i try to live in reality

  10. jeremy says:

there is no way bisping will win vs silva. if and when that fight happens bisping will be KO’d 1st or 2nd round

  11. UK_Chris says:

I dont believe he will retire either. This comes about a month after he personally asked to fight more often, 5 or 6 times a year even. He’s also on a nice little earner.

I’ll believe it when I see it come out of his mouth. Im sure the quotes were just taken out of context (thats if they are genuine quotes in the first place).

  12. UK_Chris says:

    Rutdog

Cheers man. I dont need a crystal ball me :-)

  13. Justin says:

seriously though, what makes you think Silva thinks he is bigger than the sport?! He is one of the more humble guys, right with GSP.

  14. gav d glasgow says:

if he only fights 6 more times he should step up to 205 after cote, hes cleaned up the 185.hes got the chance to become a ture gr8 because he could clean that out as well

  15. Fr702 says:

@Gav, he won’t clear up the LHW division (not that he couldn’t) he just isn’t and won’t shall never fight Machida (training partner and friend) plus he wants Lyoto to fight for the Championship

  16. Us and Chuck says:

What would be very interesting is to see Silva move up to Heavyweight and to see if he can hang with the Heavyweights.

There is no doubt Silva is a great striker and it would be great to see Silva fight the likes of Couture, Lesnar, Velazquez and if possible Fedor.

I just think it will interesting if Silva’s power could trouble the big boys.

  17. Justin says:

While it might be interesting to see Silva fight at HW, 1. I don’t think its likely and 2. I don’t think he would be nearly as effective. I would also like to see him fight more LHW before making the jump up to potentially face someone that weighs nearly 300 lbs (Lesnar)

  18. gav d glasgow says:

cheers fr702,maybe not for the title then.if he does only have 6 more fights left would like to see him take on at least 1 more 205,rampage liddell w silva.dont see anyone in the 185 taking him to the 3rd round ha

  19. FR702 says:

ya Anderson in HW, dont want to see that at all no need for it imo……

  20. jazzkok says:

If silva feels comfortable retiring saying he’s got “nothing more to prove”, then dude go ahead. I still think the ONLY challenges he’s had have been henderson and franklin. Other than that, dude, he’s ran through everyone because everyone he’s beat, isn’t that good. I mean he’s fighting COTE next. Wtf is that? He’s an awesome fighter, but I won’t be THAT impressed untill he ko’s wanderlei, thiago silva, or even steps up and fights my boy GSP.

  21. FR702 says:

cheers Gav, i would to see him face Soku personally, it would be wishful thinking for Anderson to fight Wanderlei or even Shogun (again former training partners and friends, plus Wanderlei use to corner him in PRIDE), but a Rampage fight is intriguing or how bout the winner of Vera v Jardine… so many possibilities soo little time

  22. Justin says:

    jazzkok,
GSP would actually have to step up and fight Silva, being that he is the lighter fighter. GSP also has to get past BJ first. I think Anderson is capable of winning a lot of fights at LHW, but certain fighters, namely Wanderlei would cause him a lot of problems.

  23. mike, troy ny says:

wow i never knew silva was such a ****

  24. petiot says:

I don’t see Wanderlei causing him any problems. Anderson’s striking is better and more accurate than chucks and he good reach…I’d take Anderson via tko.

  25. bfree says:

Hey let him retire while he is still healthy and on top like Barry Sanders. I forgot he was in his mid thirties maybe he feels like age is being a bigger factor than he thought it was

    As for Bisping beating Silva
    I agree with FR702
But JOHNBOY are you serious? Bisping has foughten only one person with good credentials in Rashad Evans and he lost to him and your saying he has a chance to beat A Silva, Please dont make me laugh. Now he’s facing Leben’s huge head isnt going to feel any of the Count’s little punches n bunches.

  26. southcakalak says:

i dont have a problem with him hanging up the gloves…when chuck gets knocked out at 38 years old or whatever he is now, everybody says he should have went out when he is on top, no problem with seeing anderson get out with his legacy in tact…however a lot can happen in six fights

  27. Fr702 says:

Anderson will get 2nd guessed either way let’s say that he sticks around for 6 fights and wins all of the decisivly great wonderful the greatest.. Or if he hangs them up after the July 4th weekend show, well maybe he “left” too early there was a lot of fight left in him… Or he sticks around for the next 6 years and mid way thru that stint he loses a few here and there gets ko’d well he should have retired while he was on top… See it doesn’t matter til he takes action and whatever action he has chosen people will 2nd guess him….

Chuck getting Ko’d I don’t believe its because he is old, and I also think that the LHW division can go up and down with wins and losses a plenty, look @ Jardine he ko’d Griffin (LHW champ) split decision to Liddell then he got ko’d by Houston and destroyed in 36sec by Wanderlei and now he will be fighting Vera.. The LHW division is phenominal in the UFC Liddell with a few wins could be back in the mix imo but he just got Ko’d by Evans and lost his oppritunity this time bottom line…

  28. kelvin says:

    IT CAN’T BE TRUE…NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  29. kelvin says:

JOHNBOY, YOU JERK!!!HOW DARE U SAY I HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR? IT IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING TO SAY I HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR!!!WHAT MAKES YOU SAY I HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR?!! DO YOU HONESTLY BELIEVE I HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR?!! OF COURSEI HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR!!!

    …was that humorous enough
