Mike Swick vs. Jonathan Goulet Added To UFC Fights For The Troops

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Sep 18, 2008

Mike SwickWelterweights Mike Swick (15-2) and Jonathan Goulet (22-9) will square off at UFC Fights for the Troops, according to Fightlinker.

A cast member of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Swick was eliminated from the reality series following a semifinals loss to Stephan Bonnar. Swick bounced back with five-straight UFC victories in the 185-pound middleweight division over Alex Schoenauer, Gideon Ray, Steve Vigneault, Joe Riggs, and David Loiseau but a loss to Yushin Okami in early-2007 prompted Swick to drop down to the 170-pound welterweight division.

Swick was to make his welterweight debut at UFC Fight Night 11 against Chris Leben but after Leben declined the rematch he was matched up against Goulet but was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a rib injury. Swick defeated Josh Burkman via majority decision at UFC Fight Night 12 in his 170-pound debut then took out Marcus Davis at UFC 85 in June to improve to 2-0 in the new weight class.

After starting his UFC career with a 2-2 mark Goulet left the UFC to compete in other promotions before returning to the octagon in a loss to Dustin Hazelett at UFC Fight Night 11. After earning a win outside of the organization Goulet posted back-to-back victories over Paul Georgieff at The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale and most-recently Kuniyoshi Hironaka at UFC 83 in April.

UFC Fights for the Troops, also known as UFC Fight Night 16, takes place on December 10th at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The card is also expected to include Josh Koscheck vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida, Corey Hill vs. Dale Hartt, and Rich Clementi vs. TBD.

  1. southcakalak says:

swick is a beast, who will be a contender

  2. Justin says:

Swick should easily beat Goulet, I wonder what color Goulet’s hair will be.

  3. jazzkok says:

Who is goulet? And why are they placing him against swick? Are they trying to avoid an inevitable teammate vs teammate swick vs kos or swick vs fitch? Cuz those fights make more sense since swick is a “contender” a ww. Or atleast i thought he was after he beat davis. I don’t like this match up. Swick is up there and should be fighting guys who are up there. Whatever i guess right.

  4. southcakalak says:

i agree he is a contender, perhaps i should have chosen my words more carefully, how about he IS a “legitimate contender”

  5. Fightlinker says:

    GOULET HAS A DEVIL EYE!

  6. mburtoni says:

“Swick was to make his welterweight debut at UFC Fight Night 11 against Chris Leben…”

As far as I know, Leben has always been a MW and has no intentions of dropping down a weight class.

  7. Justin says:

    mburtoni,
That’s probably why Leben declined the fight.

  8. DolfanG says:

It’ll be interesting to see Quick Swick as a WW. Will he still have as much power in his ounches or will his drop in weight translate in less power? Interesting… and Goulet will be the sacrificial lamb…

  9. RLT says:

    Dolphan G,

Swick has been a WW for his past two fights. And both of those fights weren’t very exciting.

  10. surfingk5 says:

I’m kinda tired of Goulet…maybe it’s just his name. Yeah, I don’t like his name. Swick should destroy him.

  11. T3chn3tnium says:

GOULET!! reminds me of the will ferrell skit

  12. Thuwak says:

Goulet… sounds like spoon feading to me.. Could have done the same for Matt Hammil… DAMN UFC.

  13. DolfanG says:

I haven’t seen Swick for quite a while. He was a devastating fighter at MW. Does he still have the same punching power?

  14. gunslinger says:

swick will finally look good in this fight and will destroy goulet

  15. jazzkok says:

He’s still got punching power and i think he’s just as good a ww, or atleast can be. I’m just not happy with the fact that the UFC keeps messing up the “ranks”. Might not be accurate to the T but these guys should be fighting eachother for the top contender spot.

    St Pierre The Champ/The Man

    Alves vs Sanches
    Karo vs FItch
    Swick vs Kos

Or something along those lines. NOT goulet vs Swick. What the hell dude? I hate the way some fighter like Bisping get pampered. That $hits gay!

  16. T3chn3tnium says:

haha not only pampered but home field advantage. if there is any he would get it.

  17. Mikew says:

Im trying to figure out who this devastating fighter named Swick is, he tends to bore me with his in and out quick as a bunny attacks. He is definitely not a brawler but good at moving to avoid shots and has limited power with a great Swickotine.

  18. Mikew says:

Also Goulet called out Swick for this one, dont blame the UFC.

  19. rutdog says:

This could be a good fight, well, not really. I think is the UFC helping promote Swick. He’s losing fans faster than Tito, and this could be a highlight reel knockout like the Swick of old. If not, then he could become a permanent gatekeeper at WW.

  20. kouch says:

I have not been to thrilled or excited over Swick’s first two fights at WW. I did not think losing to Okami by being over powered was a reason to drop down either. Lift weights and get stronger. I’m not sure why but it seems to me Swick has lost his explosive combos since moving down….then again it’s only been two fights. We will see….Swick does not have much to gain in winning this fight in my opinion.

  21. Justin says:

I agree with K0uch, he should have gotten stronger, not moved down. His body doesn’t look right at WW. I also agree that he has little to gain in this fight.

  22. surfingk5 says:

Swick has not looked “great” but I think having more time at this weight he can only get better. I believe he’ll be back to his old aggressive self the more comfortable he is at this weight. Maybe Goulet it the perfect guinea pig for him.

  23. Swick against Marcus Davis was a gameplan well executed. Davis is a great boxer, swick while being a good Muay thai guy is not the same caliber. Playing the ground game is smart. Swick will beat Goulet I believe

Johnathan Goulet is a training parter of GSP’s but he has failed to look even close to as impressive as GSP. I think swick finishes this fight in R2.

  24. del says:

chalk up another win for goulet, after this is swick gonna try and fight at lightweight, **** this guy looks in rough shape at WW, almost a little HIV like

  25. Mikew says:

Goulet has his ups and downs but when he’s up he is no joke, he is sometimes over aggressive forgetting about defense but you gotta love a fighter with a huge heart.
Look for Swick to be the counter puncher in this one.

  26. Dr Doom says:

Swick is gonna kick his ass ………… he may be one guy to challenge stpierre down the road ..after he dismantles BJ Penn (who Im sick of)

  27. Mikew says:

Swick dismantle BJ Penn, Mike Swick??

  28. Dr Doom says:

hahah that would be a stretch . no I meant StPierre

  29. Dr Doom says:

When penn fights StPierre it will be a big mistake for him …… George is way too talented now to lose to Penn . Penn should be focusing onn the lightweight title and its responsabilities as champion rather than use it to achieve greedy goals . He’s a chump in my books now .
