Fedor To Fight at January Affliction Event; Deal With Golden Boy Possible

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Sep 11, 2008

Fedor EmelianenkoOn Wednesday Affliction announced that they are rescheduling their October 11th event in Las Vegas to January 17th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

At the time we speculated that card changes could be a possibility and they have already become a reality just one day later.

Though a major announcement will be made on Saturday regarding the event NBCSport.com’s Mike Chiappetta has confirmed with Affliction COO Michael Cohen that Fedor Emelianenko will be in action on the rescheduled card.

Emelianenko, who was originally rumored to meet Andrei Arlovski on the October card, could take on Arlovski, Josh Barnett, or another opponent in January. His opponent is likely to be confirmed on Saturday during the announcement.

Interestingly, Affliction will make their announcement at Saturday’s boxing event in Las Vegas featuring Joel Casamayor vs. Juan Manuel Marquez, an event that is being promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. Affliction and Golden Boy previously engaged in negotiations but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement after reportedly squabbling over control. Now rumors indicate that the companies could partner up to promote future MMA events, including the rescheduled January 17th card.

The Casamayor-Marquez card will air live on HBO PPV, fueling further speculation that a deal with HBO to air Affliction events could also be in the works, though at this time such a deal is unlikely.

SO WHAT NOW. THERE GONNA THROW FEDOR ON EVERY FIGHT CARD… I SAY DANA MAKE UFC JANUARY EVENT ON THE SAME DAY AS AFFLICTION TO SHUT THEM UP…

  2. zac says:

He probably will YZ…by then he’ll have another slew of garbage TUF fighters to pad every fight card with for 2009. seriously…at least watching Fedor fight, you know someone will have their ass handed to them.

UFC needs to have at least 1 title fight per PPV, or at least 2-3 No. 1 contender matches. Paying 44 bucks for one relevant fight is pretty weak IMO.

Also..keep in mind, UFC 1-3 had Shamrock and Gracie…and that was it.

  3. yzfoxracing says:

SO DO YOU THINK THEY’LL PLAN THE GSP/PENN FIGHT THE SAME NIGHT? I WOULD DEFINETLY WATCH UFC…

  4. Us and Chuck says:

Fedor = A near sell out to see the P4P best in the world.

No Fedor = 1′869 tickets sold 3 weeks before the event (Probably)

    I doubt they will YZ

But i’d say UFN 16 or 17 would look very likely to be held on the same night.

  5. JustJoe says:

Zac, are you refering to last saturday’s UFC card? I agree it wasn’t the greatest card, but The last 2 fights were pretty good. Chuck had his a$$ handed to him, and Franklins liver kick was beautiful. Plus seeing Dan Henderson get back on track was nice.

All i did was go up the street and spend $15 on beer on a Saturday night at the local bar. No need to spend $50

  6. pmccue says:

I think if Fedor takes on Arlovski , now that would be something to watch. Last fight Arlovski was unbelievable animal in my view. Fedor will NOT walk through Arlovski.

  7. timcat says:

Thats right JustJoe. what a beautiful kick. Affliction without Fedor is just another MMA show.

  8. T3chn3tnium says:

If this is the only way we get to see Fedor fight. i say take it.. you really can’t say fedor is not that good. and danas nonsense ramblings about him are a joke… personally i love fedor and cannot wait. fedor vs arlovski would be great i think. before the last affliction how many people can say they have seen fedor fight LIVE???

  9. Dietrich says:

Afflication without Fedor is almost regional level quality.

  10. huertarogerhuerta says:

the betta question is who wants to watch a guy whos only fought scrubs his last decent opponent was cro cop and that was about 3 yrs ago lets list who hes fought since cro cop. Zuluzinho… uh who? i did some checkin on sherdog and this zulu ass lost to butterbean wow a guy that lost to butterbean impressive. he beat the 45 yr old mark coleman who aside from his wrestling doesnt have much of an mma game. yet again impressive. mark hunt is the best name in the past 3 yrs and still he took a glorified kickboxer down and submitted him wow thats special seein as how all of hunts losses r from u guessed it submissions. next up matt lindland again wow u beat up a guy u probably have 40-60 pounds on yet again real impressive. next up hong man choi yet another kickboxer who fought fedor in his 2nd mma fight again im overwhelmed by how impressive fedor is. and finally big doofy tim sylvia im not even gonna waste my time wit sarcasim pretendin to b impressed by this matchup. fedor needs to fight someone wit A)a big name like an arlovski B)someone whos not one dimensional and dominate him then ill start to consider the idea that he might b the best p4p but beatin scrubs just makes u look like a **** who got to the top and is scared of losin his shiney crown

  11. huertarogerhuerta says:

also i hope de la hoya gets his face bashed in by the mexikiller known as manny paquia and its revealed that de la hoya has decided to go ahead and stop cross dressin and go full on sex change now that would b as entertainin as boxings been in the past 8 years

  12. Dietrich says:

    huertarogerhuerta,
I was with you on everything you just posted about Fedor until he beat Tim. He’s got a new window of credibility/marketability here that he and Zuffa/Couture have to act on now.

  13. huertarogerhuerta says:

marketability yes cuz tim was a name that people recognized from his ufc dibocle but as for credibility im gonna hafta disagree beatin up tim sylvia is not a credible victory in my eyes and as for the couture part of this equasion randy has done everything possible to fight fedor and the more randy does to make this fight happen like leavin the ufc and comin back to the ufc to get the whole legal **** behind him the more it looks like fedors duckin randy and if he doesnt fight randy i say thats a huge stain on his legacy u cant b the best witout beatin the best examples anderson silva dethroned franklin who looked(and in my opinion is) unstoppable at 185 and thats y silvas the best cuz he beat the best and continues to fight stiff competition(hendo marquardt franklin 2) same wit gsp he took the belt from the long time welterweight champ who was considered by many the best at 170 b4 gsp knocked his block off same wit forrest he fought the 2 of the top lhws in the world in shogun and rampage gotta beat the best to b the best

  14. Dietrich says:

Love him or hate him…Tim was a UFC champ and he beat the man who beat Couture at HW.
(And for the record I don’t really like Tim either…)

  15. Dietrich says:

    P.S.
    I hope Manny wins too..

  16. jazzkok says:

    huertarogerhuerta,

Dude i agree. Fedor’s a dude who’s wasting his time fighting in affliction. He could be fighting the best and proving himself by fighting couture and nog. Don’t know much of the “business” side of it, but he definately can’t be considered the “best” without fighting and beating the “best”.

I loved watching him kick sylvias a$$ though

  17. T3chn3tnium says:

huerta, i see where your coming from. dana has obviously brain washed you. which is fine i guess. I, Like you,do think tim is a joke. but he has beaten some good names. fedor beating tim in what 38 secs? thats pretty remarkable if you ask me. but thats my opinion. fedor is very explosive and fun to watch. i just like watching good fights. which he tends to do. and i’m sure there is some contratct dispute between him and UFC which will not allow him to really fight the best fighters in the world. and we can all agree UFC has the best fighters..

  18. Rhymeskill15 says:

i do not think tim is seriously talented…i mean he was a boring fighter and he never really defeated good fighters…he’s over rated..

  19. T3chn3tnium says:

he has beatin arlovski during in which people were questioning if he could ever be beat. but i think no one likes him. and his fights are pretty boring unless frank mir is breaking his arm

  20. Rhymeskill15 says:

but he was way bigger then dre…and everytime he beat dre it was really boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. DolfanG says:

If Fedor fights on January 17th, then I guess his “tradition” of fighting in Japan on New Year’s Eve will be over. Too bad… I really like the way the Japanese put on a fight… except fpr the ring ropes and that crap. I particulary hate the way the guys around the ring grab the ropes and try to use them to push the fighters off. I think they should leave the stinkin’ ropes alone. In fact, do the right theing… get rid of the ropes and use a cage.

Otherwise, I really enjoy the way they put on a fight.

  22. huertarogerhuerta says:

T3chn3tnium listen im not debatin his skill his skill is above average to say the least wat i am sayin is hes gone 3 yrs wit out fightin anyone in the top 5 10 even 15 hw in the world u cant b the best unless u beat the best and untill he does that i will stand firm and fly the fedor is overrated flag and as for bein brainwashed i must b for thinkin that beatin up on a middleweight isnt impressive o dana and ur killer mind control powers uve got me again

  23. T3chn3tnium says:

Huerta GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN. dana has got you trapped. yes you gotta legit reason to believe that. just saying it seems they are so eager to put fedor to the test so dana can really say Silva is the worlds best p4p. When everyone leaves japan for UFC who are you suppose to fight?? all these questions will hopefully be resolved in the near future. and arlovki vs fedor has got my blood sugar all riled up :)

Rhyme, tim was alot bigger then fedor… fedor is a small HW.. imo. just shows size doesn’t really matter. unless your brock lesnar.

Dolf i agree ropes in mma are stupid. watching ufc for so long with the cage then watching Banned felt very wierd to me. might have been the smoke but who knows

  24. T3chn3tnium says:

o and yeah the reason they are eager to put him to the test is b/c fedor is all affliction has got. I’m curious to find out whose management is being the little B*tch. fedors russian mafia or dana. i kinda am leaning towards fedors people. any thoughts?

  25. DolfanG says:

Soon they’ll rename this promotion. It’ll be called “Fedor’s Affliction”.

This is really ridiculous. I’m all for Affliction succedding, but it has to have more than just Fedor to sell tickets. They really need to reach out to the other promotions that have ANY fighters worth seeing on PPV and put some quality fights together or get some sponsers and show what they can on HDNet Fights.

  26. T3chn3tnium says:

HAHA yes i agree as you can see thats what they tried to do. Hieron is not that big of a name nor does he really put on a good show imo. i like horodecki or however its spelled but hes not that big of a name. yet. if allows himself to be. his fights are somewhat interesting. but its 50/50 situation. IF/WHEN affliction goes down then hopefully that will draw fedor to UFC. i bet he would get paid more. but then again i dunno how much he made in the 1 minute destruction of tim

  27. aznstar_inc says:

I agree with HurtaRogerHuerta. Why would you pay $40 to watch him destroy someone you know has no chance of winning. and HRH is right, he hasent fought anyone since his pride days. And he seems content with beating up nobodies. Even if Arlovski fights him, Dre is gonna get destoyed. And I like Arlovski but Tim KO’d his ass and he is a up and down fighter ever since.

  28. T3chn3tnium says:

agreed. seems to me that hes fighting only the people who are available to him. could be wrong. besides we are talking about $40.. come on now.. Will fedor go to UFC? who knows.. if he does you know he will fight the best. and if he wins i guess he will prove people wrong. I just want to see great fights.. and that won’t happen till the companies settle an agreement to have the best of UFC go up the only person worth it outside UFC, fedor. they should be kind to us fans and through some insane card up in the near future…

  29. DolfanG says:

Here’s my prediction: If Affliction goes out of business, Fedor will NOT join the UFC. He wants to be able to keep his options open and he won’t be able to do that in the UFC. I also think he would prefer to fight in Japan anyway. They LOVE him there. He’s bigger than life in Japan. He can make a ton of yen in Japan. I don’t see Fedor joining the UFC until he’s lost his following in Japan. I also think that sooner or later, a major MMA promotion will start up somewhere in Europe. Maybe Russia… What do you think?

  30. huertarogerhuerta says:

T3chn3tnium i will b the 1st one to say that fedor is the man when he beats someone credible in my eyes. i was all on fedors bandwagon until he started fightin people that had no buisness fightin the “P4P” champ. and if all the competition leaves y stay? y not go where u can put ur skills to the test? i guess i have more of a warrior mentallity where its about fightin the best and testing urself in battle which fedor has not done for 3 years
