UFC 88 Medical Suspensions: Liddell, Franklin, and Tavares Receive 60 Day Suspensions
Chuck Liddell, Rich Franklin, and Thiago Tavares each received 60 day medical suspensions from the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission stemming from their bouts at UFC 88 “Breakthrough”.
The trio of fighters topped the list of medical suspensions issued by the GAEC for Saturday’s UFC pay-per-view event, which was held at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia and drew an official attendance of 14,736 for a live gate of $2.6 million.
Liddell has been suspended for 60 days due to his second-round main event knockout loss to Rashad Evans and must undergo a CT scan or MRI as well as a neurological evaluation before returning to the octagon.
Franklin, who defeated Matt Hamill via third-round TKO, also received a 60 day suspension due to a deep cut above his right eye. Hamill was suspended for 30 days.
Tavares, who was defeated by Kurt Pellegrino via unanimous decision in the “Fight of the Night”, must also sit out 60 days and must have a CT scan of his face for potential facial fractures.
Other notable suspensions include Martin Kampmann, who has been suspended for 30 days for precautionary reasons after suffering a knockout loss to Nate Marquardt, Mike Patt, who has been suspended for 42 days due to a nasal fracture, Ryo Chonan, who was suspended for 42 days due to facial lacerations, and Matt Brown, who was suspended for 15 days due to a cut.
The remaining fighters from the nine-bout card all received precautionary 7 day suspensions.

Anyone know how many fights Liddell has left on his contract. Don’t think they can continue to keep paying him that much for too much longer.
Yup too bad… UFC paid him 1.5 M in his 3 losses. I think they should pay him less or give it to Keith Jardine who is paid only 14k with his win
man i think they should give liddell a lifetime suspension!! hahha
nah i think he will bouce back and win one more fight…but that’s about it..
Lidell might be overpaid now but he worked his way and his name to that status. jardine has not accomplished what he has.. nor will he.. it is unfortunate that this happened to chuck but the best man won. but i do agree half a mil. for a loss is outrageous. i know the fighters train a lot for months but half a mil for 7 mins work? not bad
liddell gets that cash because his name alone gets most of the ppv buys plus the live gates, chuck is a legend to this sport so get off his back, why do u think lesnar gets 500g?? its cos hes a big draw, the iceman will be back!!
Chuck may be a big name in the UFC he may sell tickets but whats his latest record 1-3? i mean they need to give Keith 30% of what CHuck got from the ufc when they fought each other. Thats one thing! fighter fights for them to survive and live but and need to be compensated propertly.
Keith won against Chuck and he only got 14k. he should have gotten atleast 100k or 150k. how about if keith losses to chuck he will only get 7k.
We are talking about fighters pay and how they should be compensated well. Its business yeah but business is staying coz of the fighters. They should be given insurance and stuff for them to be secured.
Thats one reason also that got Randy fuming coz of Chucks pay. He lost but was given 500k. i know Its in the contract but the UFC needs to bargain with the fighters who has big cash contract that if they lost, they need to give atleast 30% of their pay to the winner to have a healthy competition.
Example if you are Chuck Lidell and you are fighting a lesser contracted fighter hmmm against Stephan Bonnar you are guaranteed 500k fight purse win or lose. While Bonnar 8k to fight and 8k to win thats sucks
Who got hit harder: Lidell via Evans or Herring via Lesnar?
Those are two of the hardest puches I’ve seen in a while.
Erizzle,
Lidell by far got hit harder. He woke up 5 mintues after the shot, while herring was just koncked down.
While you’re wondering why Chuck Liddell gets paid so much, let me ask a question… Who was the head liner on that card? Who’s name did they use to sell over 14,000 tickets? Whose name did they use to see millions of dollars in PPV’s? I know there were a lot of other guys on the card, but who would have bought a ticket or a PPV if the Liddell Evans fight wasn’t on that card? Would they have sold that many tickets if Evans had been fighting Jardine, for example?… I don’t know, but I doubt it.
sorry… I guess I asked more than just one question…
i think we have already established that that the big name fighters get paid for their name.. not performance
Do you think with his performance in last 4 fights, does he deserve to be paid that high? we are talking about performance here. Will you pay a guy 1-3 with his PERFORMANCE? he is the card drawer but think about performance
Chuck is a great fighter but you can not change you age, might be time to retire, that was a wicked knockout needs 3 months rest. Older you get the slower you get, hats off to Rashad.
Dolfan,
Matt Brown?
You guys need to enjoy the fights and not worry about fighter salary. F that ****! Worry about your own finances. As far as I am concerned, Barry Zito’s signing by the Giants proves why you do not invest MILLIONS of DOLLARS into any individual athlete……SHAT HAPPENS!
Andriy Schevchenko is a prime example.. think Chelsea paid him 60 million to ride the bench for 2 years? thats how you earn money
Kouch
I’m from S.F and a huge giants fan, and dude i couldn’t agree more.
Everyone should know these fighters names are the money makers not the “fight of the night” winners or guys who always finish, cuz while we watch the “big” fights we’re always waiting for that sub. or ko, but we only get decisions and we end up getting the more exciting fights by smaller names. big names = big paychecks, let’s not forget that this is not just a sport but a BUSINESS, and, and, Dana white’s a greedy motherf*&%
Liddell is still by far and away the best pound per pound fighter world-wide. He would crush Silva. And a rematch with Evans will prove that the knock-out punch was sheer flukey luck. I’m not really a Lidell fan but unequivocally he is still at the zenith of his career and the grand master of mma.
Yes he is a greedy one
i was surrpised chuck didnt die man that punch was brutal!
Chuck’s losses might be flukes. but he has quite a few L’s in the column. Luck goes along with the sport. Lidell is out of pound for pound talk in my opinion, if he ever was. silva would destroy chuck. and if chuck wants to get destroyed and get that 500k check then let him. i know i will be watching..
Crush Silva? are you kidding… Anderson Silva will be the one crushing the Ice! Thats not a lucky punch that hit him but a well timed punch. A lucky punch is when you blink you hit but Rashad didnt even blink when he hit Chuck.
For all the years chuck has been fighting, I think he should get every penny! He has earned it and deserves it. He will ALWAYS be the MAN.
Sooner or later he will have to give it up. I agree it was a luck punch, Evans is not the better fighter, and he will get his, when the time is right. sad to hear about Evan Tanner, I hate to hear of anyone going out like that.
LOL Cuck best P4P???? That’s a joke right? Funniest chit i’ve heard all night lol. Thanks!
Anyone see Chuck and Griffin on the world series of poker tonight? It was taped the day after Forrest won the belt, and he was sitting at the table with his face mangled. I sure couldn’t beat Chuck in mma, but i could sure kick his a$$ in no limit holdem lol.
well anderson silvas to good he could probaly win the ufc LHW title i agree he would kill chuck hes to fast for anyone in LHW i dont really like him but his so dang good he could become to champs at the same time but he doesnt because he wants lyoto to get it which is why im glad because im sure he could win it
and just to add for you, I think all the “old timers” deserve it all, as you say you can’t fight mma, so until you do ,don’t put your mouth where the money is……..
It’s funny you say that silva would get crushed, because silva would love to fight chuck and decemember would be a perfect time for silva and chuck to fight. Chuck would be off his suspensiona and silva would have enough time to train for anothere 205 fight. Liddell would end up in a coma or have his face looking like Franklin’s after his fight with Silva. Silva is much younger has muay thai skills that I have never seen before. So if Liddell wants to get beat up again I would love to see it.
That’s it then… December… Liddell vs. Silva. It’s a fight. I like the crushed ice thing. That was cool (pun). I don’t think Silva can roll through the LHW like he did the MW division, but maybe we’ll find out.
It might be just me, but I think if you have fighters with equal abilities, the bigger, stronger fighter will usually win, but I could be wrong. Silva might prove me wrong. After Saturday night, I’ll believe anything. You saw Elvis walking down the street?… I won’t doubt you. Was JFK with him?… The UFC was turned upside down and shaken last Saturday night. We will all see how it all falls.
