UFC Not Returning To Montreal Until 2009; GSP vs. Penn Likely For Superbowl Weekend In Vegas

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Aug 22, 2008

UFC President Dana WhiteUnfortunately for our neighbors to the north, the UFC will be unable to make it back to the city of Montreal before 2009, according to Yahoo! Sports, who spoke with UFC president Dana White.

Additionally, the much-anticipated rematch between Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn will take place during Super Bowl weekend on January 31st in Las Vegas, and St. Pierre’s welterweight title will be on the line in the five-round contest.

The report added that UFC 91 will take place as rumored in Portland, Oregon on November 15th, and that a lightweight meeting between Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson is confirmed for the evening.

The article concluded with White debunking rumors that Wanderlei Silva will be fighting at UFC 92 on December 27th, stating “He [Silva] might not be on that card, though. But I really don’t know for sure now. But I’m thinking he’s not going to be on that at this point.”

The UFC’s next pay-per-view, “UFC 88: Breakthrough”, will emanate from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on September 6th and features Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans in a light-heavyweight main event.

  1. kelvin says:

this sucks, we really need a sick fight card to finish off the year. so far GSP/Penn is out of the question, anderson silva is fighting in october so he probably won’t be on there, now dana is saying wanderlei might not be on there either? get to work dana and joe silva!

  2. regoillin says:

The UFC has to time everything just right if they’re going to have a sick card for UFC 100. I think we’re starting to see some of that planning.

  3. braveheart says:

UFC 100 should be in Glasgow coz UFC 1 was in 1993 and thats exactly wot fu*king year we live in

  4. Rhymeskill15 says:

oooooh man…so gsp n penn is going to happen!?!?!
that is going to be one for the ages…i think gsp is going to have his hands full..it is tough to say who will win..

and dana will pull something off, and ufc 92 is going to be loaded..well hopefully!!

  5. Cole Miller says:

i got bj penn taking st. pierre….he shoulda won the first time and now bj is actually focused now…

  6. Dannyboy says:

Penn takes GSP, Florian takes Stevenson, Liddell takes Evans.

  7. timcat says:

Penn is a more focused fighter this time around, but good ole Georges is a beast. It should be a good one.

I’ll take Joe Daddy if no one else will. I think he is better than Huerta and Kenflo (that name makes me sick by the way) will have to fight on the ground this time. No more running. Yes he has sick ju-jitsu, but Stevenson is no joke either.

Liddell knocks Sugar into the new year. Evans will finally get to taste what a real fighter hits like!

  8. aznstar_inc says:

I LOVE the fact that Penn GSP will be in Vegas! I can take a 1 hour flight in for a like $200 bucks to see it. Flying to Canada was pretty much out of the question. Hell since its like 10 days after my birthday I think I can get some people to buy my ticket to the fight.

  9. Markus J says:

Penn does not deserve a title shot at this point. Who did he beat to become #1 contender at welter weight?

I hope GSP beats him into a bloody pulp, and sends him back to the light weight division where Florian takes his title.

I use to be a fan of Penn but I just hate UFC politics. How anyone can just jump up a weight-class and be #1 contender without fighting is beyond me.

And we all know the real fight is GSP vs Silva….

  10. Cole Miller says:

    Markus-

The reason fighters can jump weight classes like this is because people wanna see the fight…I understand where your coming from and think many others deserve a shot at st. pierre before bj…but the main fact is the ufc is a business so there main goal is to make money and they see penn-gsp being a bigger money maker than gsp-alves or penn-florian…I wish there was a ranking system we could go by…alot of fighters get ****ed over…ex. machida…nobody wants to see him fight tho so he doesn’t get a title shot….this type of stuff is everywhere tho…look at women’s professional sports..no one wants to see it so you never do..except wnba which sucks and has poor ratings…its all about the benjamens

  11. Cole Miller says:

I’d actually rather see penn-silva than gsp-silva…i think penn has a better advantage against silva than gsp would because of his ground game…which is silva’s weak point if you really wanna call it that even…

  12. aznstar_inc says:

Cole Miller is correct, the UFC thinks that this fight will bring in a record 1.1 million buys. But as far as B being a contender, he would have had a shot at the belt a year ago had he not been asked to be on TUF by Dana. He lost a split desicion to GSP in a fight some thought he won based on his effective striking. After GSP won the Belt Penn would have been next in line at that point. Didn’t happen and as fate would have it Sherk gets his title stripped and BJ ends up fighting for a the LW belt. That’s the reason he deserves this shot at GSP’s belt.

  13. johnboy says:

dana has put the gsp n penn fight off coz he nos as well as every other ufc fan that chuck an forrest will be fighting in december, i see chuck knocking rashard out early on then him an forrest will be a great way to end the year, better then the human punch bag vs mir

p.s penn will own gsp its guna be a bad nite for the rush i see second round TKO PENN

  14. EliteisnotElite says:

Cole I think you are a smart person and very on top of the game… There’s a few things wrong with you thinking Machida is getting ****ed over. Realistically.. who has he fought? RF and BJ Penn; both guys who fought outside of their dominant weight classes. Tito Ortiz? Tito is a joke(sorry I know there are still Tito fans out there but you guys are like Raiders fans… retarded, that is) But you are right about the politics. Bottom line… BJ Penn has proven himself to be a contender in any weight class which is visible in seeing him go all the way to 205 to fight Machida, and he got decisioned because Machida evades and runs from any attack. You can call it good fighting, good angles of movement, whatever you want when its Kenflo and Machida doing it, but when Kalib Starnes did it he gets booted from the UFC. And don’t bother arguing that Kalib Starnes is a **** because I know that. I’m just saying so are Machida and KenFlo

  15. Dude, People PLEASE go back and watch the Penn/GSP fight again

R1 - Penn total dominance after an accidental eye poke. GSP says after the fight he could not see for that entire round and just took a huge beating, he was in survival mode the whole time and got his nose broke. Horrible beating

R2 - GSP comes out and controls Penn with takedowns, but much damage is done but understandable with all the damage Penn inflicted in R1

R3 - Penn totally gassed, GSP gets takedowns at will and controls the round, again not heavy damage but Penn is outworked.

    GSP Wins 29-28

Without an Eye poke, and going into later rounds we will see GSP destroy Penn. I think this fight gets stopped in 4 GSP wins with a commanding pressence

  16. dbiz says:

I have a problem with GSP’s belt being on the line here. If GSP wins, Penn should have to vacate and get back into a tourney-style run to get it back.

I hate lose-lose situations for one fighter when the other has a win-win.

  17. JustJoe says:

Chuck’s not knocking out Rashad. It’s gonna be a decision. Rashad might not be a great fighter, but he is smart in the cage.

  18. Cole Miller says:

    good point d-biz…it should be a non-title fight…

  19. Fr702 says:

Well GSP got his “rest” he wants, because he did fight 4 times in a 365 day period which is good he has always stepped up to fight ie when Matt Serra got hurt last year… BJ gets his shot at GSP and now has more time to get prepaired for GSP.. Superbowl show hell I can wait for that
Liddell beats Evans he will most likely get Forrest in the Dec show imo, and hopefully Wanderlei is still going to fight on that card too…

  20. jazzkok says:

It’s kool that GSP gets his rest, but for real dude, who’s gonna be on the dec. card if both silva’s are out? That one needs more sick fights like war machine vs rumble johnson………………DUDES I”M SOOO JUST F”N AROUND!!!

  21. Dietrich says:

12/27 Mir-Nogueira will have to be that much meaner…

  22. UFC fan says:

no way! i cant believe u guys can some of you guys think that Bj will win i think GSP has it! it will be a good fight and no way did he win the first fight GSP won bj won round 1 GSP won round 2 and 3 easy and GSP is the one who improved the most. and i think that bj is the better fighter but going up a wieght class makes a huge difference so GSP has if the were normally on the same wieght class Penn would probaly have it IMO

  23. I’m Cnd, I love Penn & GSP but without the benefit of the eyepoke, GSP by destruction rd 3.

Penn’s only chance the way I see it is a lucky knee when GSP shoots or sub.

  24. jazzkok says:

    can’t handle the truth “vera”-

HAHAHA dude took the words right out of my mouth!

  25. Larry says:

GSP is not going to lose to Penn. Penn is going to pack on the extra 15 pounds, become sloppy and gas by the end of the second round, if he makes it that far. GSP will finish Penn this time once and for all. Then maybe BJ will return to his proper weight class and be the man he thought he was at WelterWeight. End of story…PRINT IT !

  26. Larry says:

who was it that said they hat Dana’s email address, I’d really love to give him my opinion on this whole GSP and Penn thing. I’m glad the fight is happening but there shouldn’t be a belt on the line unless like it was stated earlier, Penn relenquishes his belt and gets thrown back in the mix.

  27. kouch says:

    Larry,

I have a feeling Dana does not care how any of us feel or think. You can vent to me if it will make you feel better. Good for MMA discussion. How about if Penn wins, then GSP drops down to fight for the LW title….

  28. jazzkok says:

GSP’s too big to go down to lw. Both his size and strength are an advantage he has @ ww and if he cut to go to 155 he wouldn’t be the same dude. Look at mike swick. That dudes bones.

  29. UFC fan says:

    yep swick=skin n bones
gsp couldnt drop down anyway he already cuts like 30 pounds i bet he could do awesome at welter wieght.

  30. UFC fan says:

oops! my bad meant to say middle wieght.
