Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin Confirmed For UFC 90

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Aug 21, 2008

Sean SherkThe UFC on Wednesday officially announced that lightweight contenders Sean Sherk and Tyson Griffin will meet at UFC 90 on October 25th in Chicago.

Sherk (32-3-1), a former UFC lightweight champion, was stripped of his title following a July 2007 victory over Hermes Franca after testing positive for steroids. The positive test, which was appealed, was ultimately upheld and Sherk returned from his six-month suspension in May to take on lightweight champ BJ Penn. Penn topped Sherk via third-round TKO and now the former UFC 155-pound champion, whose lone losses have come against Penn, Georges St. Pierre, and Matt Hughes, will look to rebound against Griffin.

Griffin (12-1) opened his MMA career with eight-straight victories, including a win over urijah Faber and a UFC debut victory against David Lee, but sufered his first career loss to Frank Edgar at UFC 67 in early-2007. He’s since bounced back with four straight victories inside the octagon over Clay Guida, Thiago Tavares, Gleison Tibau, and Marcus Aurelio.

The UFC also confirmed that Hermes Franca will take on Gleison Tibay and Josh Burkman will face Pete Sell at UFC 90.

I don’t particularly like Sherk (it’s the steroids thing) but when you look at who his losses have been to….

    Hell, that says it all.

  2. Rhymeskill15 says:

i think tyson is going to shock a lot pf people and beat sherk…
im assuming the winner gets flo or joe…and the winner of that a title shot?!?!?

  3. yzfoxracing says:

I THINK TYSON IS GONNA SHOCK THE WORLD TOO. BUT I SEE KEN/STEVENSON WINER GETTING BJ… AND GRIFFIN/SHERK FOR #1 CONTENDER…

  4. Beau Fury!!! says:

This could be a great fight if it stays standing but with both of them being wrestlers I see it going to the ground and then one of them will just lay on top of the other. This is because both are really good wrestlers and nothing will happen on the ground.

  5. kelvin says:

i think if kenflo wins against stevenson, he will fight bj. but if joe daddy wins, he’ll probably have to face the winner of tyson/sherk to get another shot at bj. it makes sense for everyone that way.

tyson will have to beat sherk and joe daddy to get a shot.

sherk will have to beat tyson and joe daddy to get a shot.

joe will have to beat kenflo and sherk/tyson to get a shot.

kenflo already beat huerta and just has to beat joe daddy to KEEP his shot.

  6. Dietrich says:

    Tyson wins in round 3

  7. gunslinger says:

WOOOOO!!…THE WINNER OF MAYNARD/CLEMENTI WILL FIGHT THE WINNER OF SHERK/TYSON IF SHERK WINS BUT IF TYSON WINS ITLL BE KENFLO/STEVENSON VS MAYNARD OR TYSON

  8. johnboy says:

thought this was already signed up, sherks record is f*cking class shame the drug thing will be what he is remembered for, this fight could go either way but ide give the egde to sherk i feel his stand up is a little better

  9. johnboy says:

i think people r forgetting nate diaz surely hes got to be up there if he wins his next fight

  10. JAI says:

Good match up. Two short, stocky, and strong guys with alot of skill. this should definitely be a tremendous fight.

  11. gunslinger says:

diaz has to beat a top tier guy first…i really dont see him beating stevenson, florian, franca or sherk…and if maynard and diaz have a rematch which they might if they both win i think maynard will destroy him like he did on T.U.F. before he got caught in a choke…but maynard trains with xtreme couture fighters now..and if they trained tyson good enough to not get submitted by marcus aurilleo then maynard wont get caught by diaz

  12. kyle says:

ok im just puttin this out there for fights that i would love to see even though some of them probably will never happen………… obviously couture Vs. fedor, condit Vs. fitch, florian Vs guida, lawler Vs. filho, A.silva Vs. vera, Kongo Vs. Sylvia, Lesnar Vs. Kongo, Penn Vs. GSP, GSP Vs. A.silva, Liddell Vs. Franklin, W.Silva Vs. Couture, Henderson vd franklin, fedor vs. lesnar and hughes vs. serra, thats some fights i would love to see, how bout you guys?

  13. johnboy says:

im just not impressed with maynard and to be honest i dont no why, hes unbeaten he beat a though guy in frankie, but still i dont see him as a big time fighter, i think i dislike him for the way he acted after that double KO i want to see the saint an the bully go at it again

  14. gunslinger says:

maynard is god!……MAUNARD IS THE BOB ROSS OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS….he vacted fine during th double ko he said he wasnt knocked out and he wasnt the test’s came back negative for a concushin…its stupid because hughes was ko’d in the newton fight and they gave him the title you could tell by how he just sat there until he woke up and if you watch the maynard/emerson fight again youll see that maynards arm is under rob emerson which is why maynard said he didnt get up and i believe him

  15. al3ino says:

i would have liked to see Tyson fight Kenflo for no.1 contender. We’ve already seen Sherk and Joe get beat by BJ in his last 2 fights.

Will be awesome never the less

  16. johnboy says:

the silly thing is i no were ur comeing from, maybe in time he will grow on me.

by the way who is bob ross

  17. dbiz says:

    Who is Bob Ross?

    HAPPY LITTLE TREES!!!!

  18. yzfoxracing says:

MAN IM WATCHING MMALIVE AND THERE SAYING THEY MIGHT BRING SEAN GANNON BACK TO FIGHT KIMBO… AND RUMORS ARE FLYING AROUND THAT KEN SHAMROCK MIGHT FIGHT KIMBO… BUT THEY THINK ITS GONNA BE BRETT ROGERS..

AND BJ/GSP WON’T HAPPEN IN DECEMBER ITS MORE LIKELY FOR SUPERBOWL WEEKEND…

  19. yzfoxracing says:

OH AND IT EITHER KENFLO/STEVENSON OR KENFLOR/FRANKIE EDGAR

  20. timcat says:

Sherk is too strong for Edgar. He win in a walk

  21. UFC fan says:

i have no idea whos gonna win tysons very good but sherk looking at his record only loesing to hughes, GSP, Bj penn those r all very good fighters well not hughes anymore but i think i will have to give it to sherk but might be wrong im not sure tysons really good and i think he could beat edgar now.

  22. gunslinger says:

all i know is if maynard beats clementi he is one or two wins away from a title shot and i hope he fights diaz next …i want some bully justice exstracted on diaz

  23. kelvin says:

i really like tyson griffin but he hasn’t completely convinced me. he seems to lack the ability to finish people. i also think he should’ve lost those decisions to both clay guida and gleison tibau, but that’s just my opinion.

  24. gunslinger says:

no i thought he beat gleison but ya i definitly agree that guida won that fight

  25. Dannyboy says:

You know this has real potential to be an all out brawl. Sherk is going to be looking to POUND somebody and unfortunately for Griffin, he’s the one facing him.

If Sherk comes out like he did against Florian then Tyson doesn’t stand a chance. If he comes out like he did against BJ…it’s over.

Now that he’s steroid free and training that way it should make a real difference. He really is good…it’s just that BJ is so much better that it made Sherk LOOK like he’s not good.

If any of you think Tyson Griffin could beat the BJ that showed up against Sherk…you are sadly, saldy, SADLY mistaken.

  26. kouch says:

    Danny,

I think Tyson could and will beat Sherk. Tyson has shown some great stand up in his last few fights. His combos of strikes are fast and frustrate figters. If Sherk can take the fight to the ground, that is another story. Griffin should be working on take down defense and working from his back. I’d be very surprised to see Sherk stand and exchange with a faster Griffin. Tyson by TKO rd 2.

  27. kelvin says:

    KOuch,

griffin is really good, but you seriously give him THAT MUCH CREDIT? you’re crazy if you think he’ll do to sherk in 2 rounds what it took BJ 3 rounds to do. and the only reason bj did tko him in the 3rd was b/c he landed that knee sherk’s face. i think you’re underestimating sherk and overestimating tyson.

  28. Dannyboy says:

    What kelvin said.

  29. UFC fan says:

ya i agree i thought guida beat him but it was really close and it was a good fight so im not suprised that the refferes gave it to tyson and if his so good not that im not a tyson fan but he really has trouble with finshing people so even though this probaly be close i think sherk will win via tko round 3 or UD
