James Irvin Made An “Extremely Poor Choice”, Took Pain Medication Without Prescription
By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Aug 19, 2008
UFC light heavyweight James Irvin, in a letter to the Nevada State Athletic Commission obtained by Sherdog, has confirmed his use of painkillers in advance of his 205-pound main event bout against UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 in July.
“In the days leading up to my fight with Anderson Silva, I experienced some residual pain in my foot from a previous injury,†wrote Irvin in the letter. “I made the extremely poor choice to take some pain medications that I did not have a prescription for. I realize this was an ignorant and dangerous decision.â€
Irvin faces a fine and suspension for the failed drug test which will be determined at a future NSAC hearing.

AHH AHH POOR BABY… “NO EXCUSES”
Don’t worry EliteXC will keep a spot for you after your release from the UFC and suspension has been served
I would be surprised if he gets released over this. But I have been wrong before and will likely be wrong again in the future. Take your suspension and train your ass off so you can come back strong.
I was kidding !
I’d be surprised too especially since Dana stuck by drug cheats like Sylvia, Franca & Sherkroid in the past.
But saying that all 3 are far bigger names than Irvin so who knows……
sherkroid haha…I doubt they kick him out, its just a painkiller, its not like he was using roids or any performance enhancing drugs…as you can see the painkiller didn’t do much for his performance against anderson silva…I’d say like a 6month suspension would be just.
WELL IT PROBABLY MADE HIM GO TO SLEEP BETER…
irvin will be back….he produces highlight reel knockouts for the ufc they wont get rid of him
I think months is the standard dind’nt Bas “El Guapo” Rutten do 6 months for painkillers and i’m sure Diego Sanchez did 3 months for pot
6 months for someone in pain
3 months for the potheads
12 months for the juicers.
IMO it does’nt seem right.
If the NSAC is gonna put Nick Diaz through so much for smoking a little weed than why would they not do the same to someone who did something far more dangerous and gives him a greater advantage in Irvin?? The UFC should set a precedent and say “we’re not going to have cheaters in our organization. period.” and kick Irvin to the curb.
Painkillers help you fight? I want some of what you are on, because narcotic painkillers slow you down….
I think they should be harder on performance enhancing drugs…I mean pot and painkillers aint gunna win a fight for you or make you do any better…
They didn’t help him during the fight DBiz. They helped fight through the pain of training. If anyone believes that it was “the days leading up to the fight” they must go to the same doc as Irvin.
These degree of painkillers that he was on suggested a much more serious problem than “my foot was hurt”. They suggested more of I’m a freaking addict and need help. Maybe not as publicly as Paulo, but this dude needs help. May he return in good health in 6 months or so.
Sorry rutdog, but as someone with addicts in his family, I have no sympathy for Irvin. He has thrown away an opportunity that many would kill for.
Yeah, he should have just canceled with a week or two notice before the fight and canceled the bout. That would have been much better.
He hasn’t thrown anything away. He’ll serve his suspension (and hopefully get help) and come back to fighting.
Irvin sucks. He only beats guys that don’t belong in the UFC to begin with. Houston Alexander has zero ground game and a fairly questionable chin. Hector is a nobody in MMA. You put him against any top quality opponent (stephan bonner, A. Silva) and he gets beat. He belongs in the EliteXC or maybe WEC.
Painkillers will not help him win the fight, I’m not for it, but you should understand the business that these fighters are in. I’m sure A LOT of people here that are talking their smack probably call in sick just b/c of a minor little headache.
brandon shut your mouth never ever say james irvin sucks…….keith got beat by houston are you saying keith sucks cause im almost certain he whopped on the iceman for three rounds……and i hate how people like you say houston has a questionable chin after losing twice…….im not a houston fan but he has a good chin look at the people who knocked him out you idiot…..thiago silva a spectacular striker and james irvin who has some of the best strikes ever and can knock you out with any part of his body…..to say james irvin sucks is a ballsy move around me so give you that but you are definitly the one who sucks…you get schdeuled to fight anderson silva with a bad foot and we will see how many pain killers you pop down your throat…no one walks away from an anderson silva fight unscared…after a fight with the spider your scared for life….the painkillers possibly saved james irvins life after getting nailed with a really heavy right that dropped him instantly…..plus james irvin would destroy the whole wec lhw division…he would have the title in like two fights…and i will end on that note though i could go on for hours!
somebody has a man crush…geez
hahaha.
Agree with the gunslinger though to the extent that Irvin is a good fighter and as much as I don’t like Houston’s attitude, he beat Keith and therefore (sorry for using maths on an MMA website, but if a>b and b>c) you’ve gotta respect the sandman.
Also the fact that he lost to the spider is no dis-respect to the guy. I mean who would feel confident against Anderson at the moment (at 185 OR 205)?
coming from the guy named cole miller
dumb… no wonder he didn’t duck…
hahaha he got killed with silva one minute K0!
Let’s break it down: James Irvin can’t take a punch, proven al a Anderson Silva.
James Irvin knows he can’t take a punch: painkillers.
It’s a cover.
anyone think they will put him in the wec? that would be some good fights with marshall, munoz, gandulla, stann and cantwell
IT WAS PAINFUL WATCHING ANDERSON WALKING RIGHT THROUGH YOU SO EASILY, JAMES.
I TOO NEEDED A PAIN KILLER JUST TO WATCH.
THANK GOD IT WAS ON FREE TV.
Of course he took painkillers. He knew Silva was going to inflict some on him that night.
irvin isn’t a contender, he’s a gatekeeper for the up-and-coming talent so thy’ll propbably keep him around. i don’t see him getting the boot especially because his knockouts can be exciting.
*they’ll
Jackpot, kelvin.
