Matt Hughes: St-Pierre vs. Fitch “Wasn’t The Most Exciting”
“I went there really to watch one fight, probably not the one you’re expecting. I went there to watch Brock Lesnar. He is so interesting because he is so athletic as well as being so powerful. So that fight went just like I thought it would, Brock took him down whenever he wanted and on the ground he did whatever he wanted. I was also there watching my buddy, Roger, but he didn’t quite look the same. I don’t think him or Kenny fought their best fight on Saturday. Roger looked to have done a few things different and I would say that he needs to go back to what he was doing before.
The last fight of the night was Georges and Fitch. Georges didn’t look as big as he has before and he seemed like he had gotten tired from the first round. Fitch had the game plan of countering Georges and you just can’t do that. You can’t counter a quicker fighter. To be honest, halfway in the third round I got up and walked out of the arena and went to my hotel. The fight wasn’t the most exciting and I wanted to get out of there before everyone else was getting up to leave.”
In a post on his official blog, former UFC welterweight champion and future UFC hall of famer Matt Hughes shares his thoughts on UFC 87 “Seek and Destroy”, particularly the performance of current UFC 170-pound champion Georges St-Pierre.

u mean u dint want to see ur belt round gsp matt dont worry if BJ moves up an fights him it will soon be round his,
I guess I dont understand comments like this… because this fight, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! It wasnt like they were circling all night or laying on each other….there were great strikes…very exciting….even though it was a decision…i liked the fight a lot… but i guess im in the minority here..
hahaha thats awesome…. He couldnt counter the quicker fighter either and almost got his arm ripped off literally haha, Fitch would own Hughes and i think he knows it thats why he was like wow i will never be able to beat either of these guys, iam past my prime, im going to go cry in my room alone.. or atleast thats how i invision it…
I don’t think he’s washed up, I think the sport evolved and left him behind and he’s very bitter. He was just up-set because Fitch went the distance and GSP walked right through
him (hughes). Now he’s fored to look at himself in the morror.
Then there was the comment that Alves isn’t a top 5 fighter in the division. Alves walked through him on a bad ankle. If he isn’t a top 5 fighter then where does that put Hughes?
MATT your an ass.. RETIRE and take care of the farm… let the real fighters fight..
Was there another kenny florian fighting that night?because i thought he executed a perfect gameplan for huerta. But then again who am i to argue with an x champ.
THUWAK
thats kind of what i was thinking i just didn’t want to sound so insensetive.
that just hurt me… i respected him but come on man that is one of the best fight ive ever seen… just because gsp said that about him…
So, I guess if he would have taken a knee in the first round and was knocked out or if was beat at his own game and then had to scream to tapout, then it would have been more exciting. Geez….I hope Serra wins!
Kris, i want to fighter bash but i wont haha, still funny that he wanted to see the bigger stronger wrestler dominate that particular fight, kinda like he use to do before GSP came around and left with his belt…
HA HA HA HA your so right…. “i can’t tap I CAN’T TAP?!”
Hughes/Serra is the kind of fight I’d expect to see headline an affliction event…. Nothing about Hughes is exciting …oh, except that knee to the face from Alves. That was epic.
FR702;
Don’t you mean left with his right arm?
Matt Hughes is just bitter, he has no business taking shots like these. Time to get one more in against a guy he can beat,(Serra), and get out while he still has any brains left. G.S.P dominated him the last 2 times they fought. You would think he woul’ve learned by now.
the only reason hughes is ACTING like he’s showing no interest in the fight is because he knows he can’t beat either one of them.It would be like me saying i’m not interested in jesica alba because i know i’ll never get her. Then again that’s more likely than hughes regaining the title.
timcat, yes his right arm and the interim belt, not that i dislike Hughes all that much but he needs to stop taking shots at GSP just because he wont ever be able to beat the “new and improved” GSP, UFC 79 was the possibly the most dominant proof that Hughes has no answer for GSP now
i agree he can’t beat gsp but i personaly think he’ll beat serra…
You were bored Matt because you have already seen GSP fight up close (real close) twice. Seeing him woop someone elses ass must be boring to you. I understand, sour grapes. GSP definitely got tired after the first round after the work he did trying to put Fitch away. He then had to pace himself for awhile. However, that fight was anything but boring. You were much more boring in your fights against GSP. You had nothing for him. At least Fitch lasted much longer than you.
I am sure he does look smaller from your point of view sitting out in the crowd. He would probably look much bigger if you were standing across the ring from him, but there is no need to waste our time with a boring fight like that again, is there?
I used to be a big fan of yours Matt, but your attitude sure does stink. I used to think you were just a nice country boy. Someone with a small ego that would just get in the ring and get business done and go home to his family. Your comments are showing an ugly side of you. But hey, whatever, you have made your money and now you can show the real you because it doesn’t matter anymore does it? You should really just stay nice and respect everyone.
Hughes is past his prime, jealous and knows that even Fitch would beat him. Hughes knows he is done. Hughes needs to fight Serra and call it a career. How the F do you leave a fight early? WTF is that garbage?!? You never know what is going to happen. I don’t care who was winning…..you just don’t leave. I actually find it slightly disrespectful on Matt’s part for leaving early. Since when were his fights the most exciting ever? As a fighter he has been great but his actions show more and more of his ****y penisheaded side and I see where Serra is coming from.
One more thing…. I hope Serra beats the **** of Hughes in humiliating fashion. I doubt it will happen that way but it is my wish.
matt needs to go back to MFS if he ever wants to end his legacy on a good note!
without pat militech hughes will get detroyed by serra..the H.I.T. squad is a bad team
We all know Hughes is done, but I do agree Fitch shouldn’t have tried to counter GSP. His jab was way to quick for him. He did his best work in the 2nd when he chased and threw the 1st punch. That’s when GSP got bloodied and that’s the reason his face at the post fight looked battered.
tuf 9 should be coached by greg jackson and pat melitch… that would be awesom…
yeah or no?
its Matt Hughes publically trying to let everyone know that he wasnt impressed just like GSP did to him, well just like everything else Hughes tries to do GSP did it better…..
Gun, i noticed that as well since Hughes has left MFS he simply hasnt foughten the same
YZ, or Greg Jackson and Bob Cook, haha you know that i believe that “real coaches” should coach the next T.U.F season….
I think more fighters would come out each season. it would be more competive… im starting to get burned out of the tuf season cuz not much changes. all though i like how they had to fight to go to the house…
Ugh I hate to agree with Matt but with the exception of one shot GSP gave to fitch with TERRIBLE follow up, it wasn’t that great of a fight. GSP should have owned him hands down. He was meek and that’s why it appeared he had lost a step. I do think GSP was right though… Fitch very well could be THE MAN to beat in a couple years.
This kind of upsets me. When I first started watchin UFC and any other MMA Matt Hughes was one of the guys I kinda looked up to. He was a good ambassador of the sport and made it not so street fight and more of a sport (in my mind). Then his antics on the TUF season with Serra coaching the other team was kinad self-centered. He really annoyed me making the entire season about him and his legacy on the sport, then this really pi$$e$ me off. I think he is just bitter about getting manhandled by GSP. He reminds me of those two old men that sit in the blacony during the old Muppets shows (Statler and Waldorf). This is really just Matt being mad at Matt for being old and watching the world and the MMA game pass him bye.
TJ,
Totally agree with you. I am disgusted as a fan that the former champ would walk out of a fight early. Especially when the fight taking place has a fighter who took your title. Fitch was able to go the distance and took a massive beating. That alone gave people a reason to stay and watch. Matt is just a grumpy old man…..he’s not even that old but his body probably feels like hell. I just can’t get over it…..LEAVING EARLY?!?! Maybe he’s a dodgers fan too.
I don’t understand how anyone could knock GSP.He man handled fitch and beat him in every aspect of the fight. And i’m a fitch fan.Lets not forget just how good fitch is i dont think there’s anyone in the world that would have a chance at finishing fitch other than gsp.I can see being upset that he didn’t finsh but not suprised.
