UFC 85 Recap: Alves Stops Hughes, Bisping Dominates Day
Thiago Alves stopped former UFC welterweight champion and future hall of famer Matt Hughes via technical knockout early in round two on Saturday, June 7th, at UFC 85 “Bedlam” in front of a sold-out crowd at the O2 Arena in London, England.
The showdown between two of the UFC’s top welterweight contenders was the main event of the eleven-bout pay-per-view event.
Just one day removed from failing to make weight for the bout, which was contested at a catchweight of 175-pounds, Alves stuffed several first-round takedown attempts by Hughes and delivered the majority of the damage in the opening round. Early in the second, Alves caught Hughes with a flying knee that dropped him to the mat and quickly followed with several hard punches to the head to force the referee stoppage 62 seconds into the second round.
After the bout, Alves promptly apologized for failing to make weight the day before, adding that he had sprained an ankle leading up to the bout and was unable to run or train to drop the additional weight.
With the win, the biggest of his young career and his sixth straight in the octagon, the 24-year-old Brazilian, who trains out of American Top Team, now has his eyes set on a welterweight title shot. “Mr. Dana White, I’ve been a good boy. Please give me a title shot,” said Alves.
“He’s a good fighter, he got me, no doubt,” said Hughes following the decisive loss. However, the former UFC champion promised at least one more bout before he finishes his career, calling out longtime rival and fellow former champion Matt Serra.
In the co-main event, England-native Michael Bisping dominated Jason Day, defeating his middleweight foe off with strikes midway through the first round. Bisping dominated from the onset, securing an early trip takedown then unleashing a flurry of ground and pound from side mount. Day was able to scramble away twice but Bisping quickly picked up where he left off, pounding on Day until the bout was halted at the 3:42 mark of the opening frame due to overwhelming strikes.
Mike Swick secured his second-straight welterweight win on the main card, posting a unanimous decision victory over Marcus Davis marred only by a one-point deduction for grabbing the fence. Though Davis was able to connect with some shots in the clinch, Swick too was able to connect while the pair were locked up and dominated the ground, controlling Davis and opening up several cuts on his opponent’s face, to win all three rounds. All three judges rendered scores of 29-27 after taking the penalty into account.
In a fast-paced middleweight bout Thales Leites topped Nate Marquardt via split decision. Though Marquardt clearly won the bout based on the established judging credentials, two one-point deductions by referee Herb Dean cost the former middleweight challenger the bout.
Leites captured the opening round after dropping Marquardt to the canvas with a hard right and mounting his opponent, who was eventually able to escape and survive to round two. Early in the second, Marquardt landed a knee to Leites’ head while his opponent remained on the ground, an illegal strike that caused the bout to be temporarily halted while Leites recovered and a point to be deducted from Marquardt. After resuming, Marquardt quickly picked up where he left off, bloodying Leites with hard ground and pound that was just short of stopping the bout. Despite Marquardt dominating the second, the round is a 9-9 draw due to the point deduction. It’s a similar storyline in the third as Marquardt again lands a hard series of ground and pound, as well as a late piledriver, but has a point deducted for strikes to the back of the head and round three is another 9-9 draw.
After accounting for the two deductions, Leites won a close split decision on the judge’s scorecards securing two cards of 28-27 in his favor. The other judge ruled 28-27 in favor of Marquardt.
In a controversial opening bout to the pay-per-view broadcast, Fabricio Werdum defeated Brandon Vera via late-first round technical knockout.
Vera had the upper hand early in the fight, staggering Werdum with a hard combination though Werdum was able to survive and take Vera to the ground. Once on the canvas, Werdum was able to mount Vera and deliver a string of ground and pound. With just seconds remaining in the round and Vera seemingly defending himself from the blows, referee Dan Miragliotta, the same referee from last weekend’s controversial early stoppage of James Thompson versus Kimbo Slice at EliteXC “Primetime”, stopped the bout in favor of Werdum.
Uninjured from the ground and pound assault, Vera immediately returned to his feet to protest the controversial early stoppage. “There was 15 seconds left. Let me take my ass whupping and go to the second round,” said Vera.

I’ve been saying that Hughes is overrated for years and his past few fights have proved that.
Bisping is one of the best fighters in MMA. Especially now that he has dropped down to a more natural weight class. He was chubby at 205.
Thales Leites vs. Nate Marquardt was interesting. I hate to see a fight decided by penalties. Especially if one of the penalties didn’t even occur. I have to give props to Thales. That knee rocked him. I didn’t think the fight would continue after that and to even compete after being rocked like that is impressive. The point deducted from Marquardt for the elbow to the back of the head is bs. The replay tells the story, it was a bad call by Herb and that bad call was the deciding factor on the judges scorecards. That being said, Herb should have taken 2 points for that knee (I don’t know if he can do that or not). So I guess it evens out in the end.
Werdum vs. Vera was awful. Vera was in a bad spot, but not so bad as to stop the fight. He wasn’t hurt. I didn’t know that Dan Miragliotta reffed the Kimbo/Thompson fight too. He needs to be fired. Two calls like that in a row? Are you kidding me? The UFC cannot let referees ruin fights like this. Why is he even reffing Elite XC fights?
Fire Dan Miragliotta!
If the UFC is the MLB or NFL of MMA, Elite XC is high-school ball. Maybe even middle-school.
Tmoney,
Are u crazy? Matt Hughes is overrated is like saying that Micheal Jordan was overated. I admit that Hughes is not as tough as he used to be, but overrated is not his caption by far. Hughes looked to be a little more lean in this fight. He looked like a regular fighter and you could actually see his neck. Well, at least he will leave on a good note by kicking Serras ass.
Also, Bisping is one of the best fighters in MMA? Are you kidding me? Only decent fighters he has fought is Rashad and Hammill, and he lost both of them, well should have lost both of them. Put him up against Franklin, Hendo, Silva….he gets dominated in the first round.
Thiago Alves should have to fight a few more times before the title shot. What a **** asking for a title shot and he couldnt even make weight. GSP would kill the kid and after him not making weight to fight Hughes, I would love to see GSP hurt him.
Hughes is not overrated, he was very good at the control game, it’s just not enough any more plus his mind seems to be on retirement. The way I’m starting to see things it’s like Hughes is a second generation MMA guy, (Royce Gracie & Tank Abbot type guys being first generation). The problem now for guys like Hughes is the 3rd generation (St-Pierre & John Fitch type guys) are just on another level. I guess the point here is, Hughes during his heyday walked though all comers if the guy was so overrated don’t you think he would have lost more fights?
FixXer you beat me to the punch. good post
Tmoney,
your a fag, do you know anything about MMA?
Easy steve-o, didn’t you read Timoney’s Bisping comments he sounds like a real expert to me.
matt is a living legend not nice to see him get his arse handed to him on a plate like last nite but like kris said these guys are on a diffrent level nowadays, i still belive the count is one of those guys the only person i dont see him beating at 185 is silva, but if silva is going to 205 the count will rule at 185 rich wll get owned by the count hendo will be a diffrent story but ide still give the edge to the count, peole under estimate bisping punchin power as rich an hendo will do and that will be there down fall, dont belive me? just look wat happend to matt last nite.
“he had sprained an ankle leading up to the bout and was unable to run or train to drop the additional weight” my ass. His ankle looked just fine during the fight
The card turned out to be pretty good! I sure the UFC is happy to get this one behind them. Theyhad tomake a lot of changes to this cards for due to a lot of unforseen circumstances thattook place. They hadsome BIG fights plannedfor this fight, that got “shelved” because of injuries, arrests, and everything else. In the end, they still managed to put a pretty good card together!
Well, I guess it’s on to the next one! Rampage-vs-Forrest! I think this is going to be the toughest fight of Rampage’s career, but I hope Rampage pulls this one out!
Jai, Rampage vs Forrest should be a good fight. But toughest of Rampages career could be an exaggeration. Remember the 2 fights against Wanderlei. I hope we get to see a third.
Tortie - Alves did have his ankle heavily taped in the bout. He walks around at 190 so even a minor ankle injury that sidelines him from working out for a day could be enough to make him weigh over the limit.
I agree with everything you said FixXer, Hughes isn’t overrated, he’s just aging and not as dominant as he once was because he’s still fighting the top fighters in the division, Bisping has looked good at 185 but he’s no where near one of the best fighters, and Alves needs to make 170 at least once before he gets a title shot.
I don’t know who he’ll fight but I think Alves will fight one more bout before getting a title shot because I see GSP defending against Fitch then fighting Penn before fight Alves or another challenger.
JOHNBOY,
Rich would get owned by Bisping?? Are you mad? I dont underestimate Bispings punching power but Franklins is much better. Franklins skill and speed would have Bisping running around in circles. I respect your opinion, I just think its crazy
T MONEY,
YOU’RE WRONG! COMPLETELY WRONG! Hughes is the most dominant WW champ ever. Not even GSP has accomplished that yet. Matt Hughes said not too long ago on the TUF show he had 3-4 fights left in him. He does not deserve the disrespectful comment you made. Of all the regulars and random people who post here, I have never read such garbage comments. I swear you are trying to get a rise out of people.
Bisping is a bum. He has only fought bums and in my eyes he is the Kimbo of the UFC for the UK fans. Only difference is Bisping has some “real” skills and potential. Bisping does look much faster and athletic at his lighter weight but let’s see what he can do aganst a Leben, Quarry, Marqaurdt, Okami, Henderson or Franklin.
I wanted Vera to win more than any fighter on the card but the match should have been stopped. He got mounted then ground and pounded. The same thing happened to Kimbo vs Thomspon and it made a controversial issue with whether the match should have been stopped. Situations like that are hard to call but when a fighter is not defending himself or answering back, it’s time to stop. Safety of the fighter’s is first!
I agree KOuch…..that fight was stopped way to premature. I wanted Vera to win that by far. On the bright side, I think he won over many fans in the process. Sometimes losing can be a boost in your career if that makes any sense. Just on the marketing side, but now he needs to dominate his next opponent.
Hughes is and always will be a legend in the sport… His record speaks for itself. The sport has grwon leaps and bounds and we now are seeing younger more complete fighters. Alves looked great but I agree that he needs atleast one more showing before he is granted a title shot. The ‘Count’ is a solid fighter but has yet to have been tested by the elite of 185’s. I would love to see Franklin and Bisping! I can’t say anything more about Bisping until he fights a top tier fighter.
The ref’s should pay attention to how many punches are actually getting through on Vera….if you look carefully, only a few got through, and others were weak hammer fists, plus he was yelling that hes OK……… it was a close round, its not like Vera was getting dominated the whole round and then mounted for the finish off, he just got put in a bad position with 30 seconds left….. Refs shouldn’t go from reffing a fight with 2 guys like Kimbo and Thompson and then make a quick stoppage on 2 top guys because he let Kimbo get ground and pounded for 2 minutes until the round ended…. Maybe there should be refs for the top fighters and then refs for medium to low caliber fighters ?
Hughes did a great job of dominating his era in MMA, he will always be looked at the one of the greatest ever. At a fit weight of 170, these new guys coming up and just too strong and fast……
That is fine everyone saying that Thiago needs one more fight before deserving a title shot. I’m sure Thiago would be fine with that, as well. Although his last two wins were against Karo and now Hughes, two very big names in the welterweight division. Also, it was reported awhile back that he was next in line after Fitch which is probably why he asked for the title shot in the first place. So no reason to call him a **** for asking for a title shot. He’s always been respectful. It is a shame he couldn’t make weight because that taints this win a bit, but it was a pretty dominant performance.
But then again, i always say, if your even at risk of the fight being stopped…thats your own fault……
but i understand Veras frustration 100% !!!!!!!!
Bisping sucks!! He beats a nobody and Rogan mouths off “huge win for Bisping” I can’t wait until he fights someone really good and they KO him.
I agree with Rogan that it was a huge win and the best of his career as Day is a really good fighter but I don’t think he’s ready to fight a real, top caliber middleweight like Silva, Franklin, or Hendo.
Sounds like a lot of you guys have a man crush on Matt Hughes. He’s just not that good.
“The way I’m starting to see things it’s like Hughes is a second generation MMA guy, (Royce Gracie & Tank Abbot type guys being first generation). The problem now for guys like Hughes is the 3rd generation (St-Pierre & John Fitch type guys) are just on another level.”
exactly.
After the disappointment of all those high profile withdrawls this event turned out to be pretty good, sure there were a couple of lame bouts like Davis/Swick (where the crowds mexican wave was the most entertaining event of the entire 3 rounds) but by enlarge is was a top night.
Being a Bisping fan i’d have to say his fight was my personal highlight, the whole arena went crazy with 20,000 fans chanting like we were at a football game. I know i’d had around 10 pints by the time his fight started but is it me or does he look amazing at 185? I think he’d be more than a match for anyone in that division, including Anderson Silva. I know all with Jason Day not being a big name all you Bisping haters are probably still Bisping haters, but the guy takes care of business!!
I had mixed emotions during the Matt Hughes fight, I respect the fighter but can’t stand the man & was willing him to lose, but when he did I felt a little saddened by his recent demise, having said that i’m still glad he lost.
I don’t know if any of you guys in the states have seen any of the pre-card fights but the Hardonk ko of Sanchez was f*cking awesome, he nearly took his head clean off, Sanchez dropped like a sack of sh*t, quality.
Anyway, can’t wait for the ufc to return to the uk again, anybody any idea of when that might be?
jpm
me an u see eye to eye on most subjects i cant do wiv all the bisping haters, the count looked f*cking ace last nite, i want franklin an the count to go at it, nowt better then us english proveing the americans wrong, cant wait till the count walks through all these so called top guys!!
hell yes
Tmoney you got me Hughes is old school, but he is still the most dominant champ in UFC history is he not?
The count has not shown a good show against any of the proven UFC elite 185 pounders.. thats a fact.. he has skill and looked good but the same can be said of Ortiz when he faught Shamrock.. To make claims of him taking the belt is way to early… give it time and see how he performs against better talent.. you guys sound like just another manchester united supporter..silly wanker
Johnboy
Alright pal, I hope he does walk through these top guys. There were a group of 4 americans sat near us last night with there stars & stripes flag chanting USA USA all f*cking night. Then when Bisping fought & they had no home fighter to cheer for they just sat there shaking there head everytime Bisping connected & booed him whilst he was talking to Joe Rogan at the end, I wish I was at a mid-80’s football game, I would have been jumping out my seat and educating them with my fists & forehead, having said that I would only have been about 10 years old then so maybe I would have just stayed put, but you know what I mean. What i’m trying to say is these Bisping haters really f*cking hate him, I mea like with a passion & I think even if he won the 185 title then stepped up and won the 205 title they’d still hate him & say he was over rated.
Like you I think Franklin would be good match to make, and whilst i’m not 100% convinced he would walk through Franklin I could still see him gaining a big fat W
mman
Liverpool actually……………and no need to be so personal and start name calling we’re only expressing opinions, I haven’t killed anyone or anything
mman
leeds united supporter mate so dont no wat ur on about man u supporter, leeds n liverpool hate man u more then any other supporters so ur talking crap with that comment,
jpm
they hate him so much because hes english an the americans like to think there the best at everything thats why they see the count as a threat they dont want us english on top but boys u all no were the kings
Johnboy
Ha ha, nice one mate, spoken like a true Englishman
Hey now, no need to bash Americans here. Mexican, Brazilian, American….I would say the same thing about Bisping if he were either one of those. I dont care what country he came from, the bottom line is that he has not fought anyone good, and when he has (Hammill, Evans)..he lost them. No matter what JOHNBOY and JPM say, u know he lost to Hammill. His own countrymen were booing him.
Bisping has no class as well. He talks so much crap and has no “TOP” fights to back it up.
Ill just say this about Hughes… hes only 34 and only lost 7 fights in his career…but won 43..I dont think its all over for him he could still fight and I hope he does
Kris,
Hughes is the most dominant champ in UFC history, no doubt. But some people act like he is the best thing since sliced bread. All of his 7 losses have come by some sort of stoppage and when I see him fight I just don’t see “it” anymore. He’s 1-1 with BJ Penn and he got his ass beat by GSP twice. Throw in his loss to Alves yesterday and you know that something is missing in his game. For a 42-7 fighter to lose 3 out of his last 4 fights shows a definite problem.
I think we all agree that we would like to see Bisping fight better fighters. He would beat Leben and Franklin like a rented mule.
Tmoney,
You’re changin’ your tune. The problem is you came off and bashed Hughes. Bottom line, he is still the most dominant WW champ ever. That’s that. No bashing a future Hall of Famer….no need. Stop whle you’re ahead.
I wasn’t trying to bash Hughes, just point out that he’s not as great as everyone says. If Hughes is so great why did he lose to BJ Penn and twice to GSP? Why did he lose to Alves? On paper he looks good but in reality he has lost 3 of his last 4 fights (by TKO,submission, and TKO) . I don’t know whether he is already past his prime or what, but it’s a fact that he’s been getting his ass kicked recently.
I can not see how anyone can say Bisping would beat Franklin like a “rented mule”. Good god I hope that matchup does happen. It blows my mind to think that anyone would think that. Franklin is far better at every aspect of MMA, and has fought in the big fights to prove it. It is known he cant beat Anderson Silva, but it has also proved that no body else can either.
Tmoney,
Everyone loses. Hughes has beaten BJ and St. Pierre. St. Pierre has lost Matt Serra. BJ has lost to Jens Pulver. People lose. The thing about all them fighters that Matt Hughes has on them is that at one time Matt Hughes went on a 18 fight win streak.
I agree with you saying he may be past his prime, or that he cannot keep up with “SOME” of the competition, but he is still a top welterweight and can bounce back like any other fighter. Look at Chuck, he is making his comeback campaign right now after his 2 fight loss. Matt Hughes does not suck by far.
Does it feel to anyone else like dana is carrying The Count a little? I mean I think his fights are real but I don’t see any real career progression. Most of the other TUF fighters have evolved more.
Matt Hughes will be around long enough for one more huge payday.
any wrestlers out there no how much 3lbs over is. thats a ton. how well would he have fought if he did what he was supposed to do and make weight.
I agree with you Dirty about Mergliotta and his decision. I’m sure he’s had an ear full at least, from Dana for sure I would think and from Vera and his coaches too, not to mention the fans that were booing him. He’s had a bad week making bad choices. Better luck next time, watch a couple fights of the fighters that you referee and see what kind of fighters they are, see if they’re prone to tapping or quitting…likely not for the most part I think. I know this probably doesn’t make much sense but oh well. Refs should know fighers period!!!
At this point, Hughes only really has one more fight left in him and that’s against Serra which I think he will win. After that fight, he will probably say that it was the most gradifying win for him and then retire and just train fighters full time and maybe make some guess announcing appearances on future UFC cards. If Serra looses the Hughes fight, UFC will probably release him from his contract.

Hughes vs Serra will most likely only be a spike tv fight. Serra’s window has closed at least half way. JAI which fight is worth $1k or more in total expense to Vegas. I don’t see one there and I think most fans on the coast opposite the fight would agree.
The great fight for Hughes is the third fight with Penn. There will always be a newcomer or younggun but if he is leaving the rubbermatch with Penn would be the payday he would want to leave on.
I think Bisping should fight Leben or maybe Nate Quarry next. Moving on from there, maybe a stop-gap fight against a BJJ guy (Leites would do nicely). After that, Franklin. Bisping says himself that now is not the right timing for a title shot, but I think he’s got a way to go before he should step out towards one of the top contenders.
I don’t like Matt Hughes - at all. But he was gracious in defeat and was classy. That deserves respect regardless how many fights he wins or loses.
I don’t think Alves deserves a title-shot yet. After not making wait, he needs to fight someone else before the shot. I would say he fights either Fitch or GSP following their fight and if he wins then he should get the shot he wants.
I’d also say that as an audience member there on Saturday night, the mexican wave pissed me off big time. The fight could finish at any second, and they want to get in my way waving their hands around and yelling like schoolkids. Thanks!
I understand about the crowd blocking your view. My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Vegas last December And all of Curran’s people were up during the Marshall title defense and they were not watching the fight. I swear I thought we were going to be carried out of there. VS does a really good job controlling the program.
i am SICK of seeing people mention a possible bisping-silva fight. what an insult!!! the gay count hasn’t fought any top competition at MW and the only 2 good fighters he fought at LHW beat his ass (i am not counting the “win” over matt hamill cause that was BS). let hime fight cote, leben, almeida, marquardt, leites, henderson, franklin, etc. it is STUPID to say he should get a title shot soon, he hasn’t proven a damn thing except that he’s faster at MW and that he acts like a freaking thug!
to the fools saying matt hughes is over-rated…what a dumb comment. it’s definitely fair to say that he’s past his prime or even to say the competition has gotten better these past few years. figthers are more well rounded. give credit to alves, it’s not like hughes lost to a nobody. alves is a freakin’ BEAST!!!
kelvin, right on. the only reason i’d like to see bisping v silva is to see his ass get dominated and embarrassed. it has nothing to do with thinkin bisping deserves that shot. after saturday, i think his next opponent should be marquardt who i also think would destroy the fag count.
BREAKING NEWS:
I just read on Fightline.com that the UFC has signed the #1 P4P Boxer in the world, Floyd Money Mayweather AKA Pretty Boy to a figting contract. Not only am I a big fan of MMA, I am also a big fan of Boxing and I read on Maxboxing.com last Friday, Mayweather just recently officially retired from boxing on last Friday. If the reports of Mayweather signing with UFC are true, It makes since now, why Dana White says he has some news that would rock the MMA World! THIS IS HUGE!!!
Ref Miragliotta SUCKS!!! That stoppage is so controversial and whoever said that is was a good stoppage should kiss my A$$. My fellow Filipino Vera is the superior fighter and he knows that there is 15secs left so why would he quit? Mr. DANA WHITE let them fight again and don’t let Werdum the contender for the Mir and Nog winner. That controversial fight doesnt earn anyone a title shot or is worthy of a title shot. yes you are not the judge or the ref but you and joe silva has the right to have this rematch happen so let them fight again since the Ultimate fighter Nog Mir will be finish way to soon. highlight the UFC 89 like what you did to Bisping and Evans and name it Validation 2
kelvin
i was reading the paper 2day an the count has even said hes not ready for a shot at the belt, im a big fan of bisping and i admit silva would own him, but i do think he will beat anybody else at that weight maybe hendo would beat that would be to close to call but frankin, okami, leben, nate all those guys i just think the count is too good for them, the count is a good guy he speakes his mind and says things like it is i dont no why people think he is ****y he only says wat most over fighters say before and after fights.
Bisbing has a fair chance at the champ. I think Anderson is better but then again Anderson thought he was better than Ryo Chonan.
OMG! Get off Bisbing jock…he is good but not a proven top tier fighter yet..I would say tha about any fighter that recieves so much undeserved hype.. come back in 6 months if/when he defeats Henderson/Okami/Franklin and hoist him on your shoulders then…but give us all a break that with this nonsense of him deserving a title shot with 2 fights at 185 and his recent win over the likes of Jason Day..Give the kid a chance to fight more talented guys before you start sizing his waist for the belt.
I Just read on MMARATED.com that Dana says the Mayweather story is not true!
I originally made the post after reading on Fightline.com that Mayweather had signed the deal with UFC.
Fair chance is slightly better than 50% because I believe the fight would be in the O2 arena.
from a sherdog post
group of investors led by Dana White have agreed in principle to purchase the UFC from Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta for an undisclosed amount. Included in this investment group is WWE’s Vince McMahon who will now own a minority stake in the company. They also have plans on taking the company public by years end.
At the press conference also expect Dana to announce that with the help of McMahon, who has extensive connections in the New York State Athletic Commission, they were able to get the UFC sanctioned in New York, and plan on having a show sometime in the winter at Madison Square Garden. That is all I have right now.
hey dietrich,
after saying bisping has a fair chance at the champ, you should be BANNED FROM ALL MMA SITES! it is clear and utter stupidity to say that, i don’t kow what’s going through ur mind! go watch WWE or something because you obviously can’t know much about the UFC if you truly think that.
just think of all of the TOP fighters that silva has OWNED, and you think bisping has a shot when the only 2 semi-big named fighters BEAT HIS ASS?! not a smart comment buddy!
