Alves, Burns, Wiman, and Tavares Awarded UFC 85 Bonuses
By: Kris Karkoski | Jun 8, 2008
Thiago Alves, Kevin Burns, Matt Wiman, and Thiago Tavares were each awarded $50,000 bonues for their efforts Saturday night at UFC 85 “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England.
“Knockout of the Night” went to Thiago Alves for his early second round knee and ground and pound stoppage of former UFC welterweight champion and future hall of famer Matt Hughes.
UFC newcomer Kevin Burns was awarded “Submission of the Night” for his upset triangle choke win over jiu jitsu black belt Roan Carneiro.
“Fight of the Night” awards were given to Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares for their back-and-forth preliminary bout which Wiman won via knockout midway through the second round.

wiman looked like he could give BJ a run for his money haha jokeing aside he looked good hope he can build on this because if he fights like that people will pay all day long to watch him, credit to alves for kicking matts butt, i think hes earned the right for the next shot at gsp/fitch, he made a bit of a mistake by not makeing weight if he does that again then i think he needs to move weight but if it was just cause of his ankle maybe we should just look past it this time because i see him giveing gsp alot to think about, and thats if he gets past fitch who is no pushover.
I remember when Spencer Fisher kicked Thiago Alves ass. Thiago has come a long way since then.
Alves should have not been given a bonus as punishment for not making weight. I agree that was a great KO but the point is he did not make weight and he should be held accountable. If he now has to fight someone before getting a title shot that works for me but I keep reading he is the new #1 contender. Alves is bad ass but not making weight and asking for a title shot shows no class. He made the ankle excuse and that is BS! He should have been on a schedule and not waiting until the last 10 days to make weight. Aside from that, he looked fine in the ring. I like Alves but am angry at him as a fan right now. I know he couldn’t care less with his $50,000 bonus so good for him.
JohnBoy you have a really good point in that Alves does deserve a shot according to how he has performed in the octagon, especially with his last two wins (impressive TKOs victories of Hughes and Karo). In addition to that, being that Alves is on such a tear lately, it would be an easy fight to sell and promote for the UFC because Alves is indeed the biggest threat to the winner of GSP-Fitch. My only thing is, even if his ankle was hurt and he couldn’t do any physical activity for 3 days, he still could have sat in the sona for hours on in during those 3 days to stay on track with his weight. I guess if the UFC want to put together the best possible match up with the GSP-Fitch winner, they will give Alves the title shot, but if they want to send him a messege for not making the weight for his last fight, they will make him fight one more time against Swick, Kosheck or some one really tough before giving him the shot. Like I said, I will understand either way. It will be interesting to see what Dana and the UFC does with him.
It will probably be GSP vs Alves in dec or jan, if he don’t make weight they should cut his azz. That is probably the most embarrassing thing you can do in mma.
Alves should have to fight Koscheck. Jai threw it out there and that actually sounds like a good challenge for Alves since he couldn’t make weight. Winner gets a title shot. I hate Kos but think he is very deserving of being a top contender with another win or two.
Problem is is that Kos has still not fought top competition and won aside from Diego. And if Kos did fight Alves and won then he’d rematch GSP who recently dominated him. Maybe he’d do better the second time but I doubt it.
I think it’ll be Fitch/GSP and then if GSP wins it’ll be Penn/GSP, then if GSP wins he’ll fight Alves if Alves continues to win. But after that there isn’t a lot of people left for him to fight at 170.
Does anyone have the math done on the penalty for the weight cutting failure by Alves?
Wiman was the big surprise last night! He keeps improving like this they’ll have to pay him like a figher. Well done though Wiman deserves the bonus he put on a great all around good fight.
After GSP is done with Fitch, I’m relatively confindent GSP will rule for a while now that he’s got his belt back. Fitch is likely going to be his toughest fight yet in a lot of ways, especially wrestling. I think GSP will come out ahead in the second round and finish him with a TKO or submission. I think ALves should have one more fight before he gets the winner of GSP and Fitch. Matt is a legend but he doesn’t look even remotely close to the fighter he was a year or two ago. But it was a pretty dominating fight by Alves.
Marquart was ROBBED!! He dominated Thales. Herb dean pulled a Mergliotti (or however you spell it) and made a bad call on the elbow to the back of the head (supposedly) but after video replay there was no question the elbow was legal and thus a bad call…It cost Nate the fight as far as I can tell, but that’s the fight game.
They should do an immediate rematch between Leites and Marquardt. It’s only fair if you ask me.
he i know alves really pissed a lot of people off with this not making weight business but he is getting fined for that so the bonus is his for a good showing. as far as making weight he probably was on schedule but when you cant run 10 days prior that really throws a monkey wrench in his plan. I was a wrestler and i know i would cut 10 lbs a day before weigh ins you can start cutting huge ammounts of weight weeks before a fight you would tear your body up these guys get themselves on a plan to lose weight natually for a few weeks and then get them down to a weight where they would start shedding muscle instead of fat then they stay there till days before the fight and then burn it off as water weight which could be done in a few days but haveing the ankle thing would really make that hard considering the sauna only does so much for your core temp it gets the outside up which is good for a few pounds but to get the insides cutting you need to run use your muscles jumping jacks jump rope all great ideas for the water weight but i understand i believe he should get a get outta jail free card this time but no more messing around.
anyone else besides joe rogan of course notice that thiago looked like a freaking LHW against hughes which looked extreamly dwharfed next to alves????
What are the odds on Fitch vs GSP. I think I would take Fitch. GSP is losing too much trainingb time as champ to the duties that come with the belt and it will affect his mental game again.
Dietrich,
How do you know GSP is losing training time? He may be more busy as champ but I do not think that takes away from his training. I think Fitch has a better chance than most people give him credit for. Personally, I would like Fitch to win but it is definitely a tough match for him. Fitch is definitely the underdog.
When the Entertainment Tonights take up Fitch’s time like they do GSP then they will be on equal footing. GSP is more well rounded but Fitch is hungry and I think hungry wins.
I can definitely agree with being hungry but after GSP got caught by Serra I think that was a wake up call. I expect a battle between the two but if it goes to the ground I have a feeling whoever is on top first wins by stoppage quickly. These guys are going to bang…..Unless someone has somethin’ up their sleeve…
Agree with you on both points.
Marquart was not robbed, we were ringside and he was getting out boxed big time by a quicker fighter before he struck that knee which knocked Leites out (he staggered around like a baby deer!!!) That completley altered the fight and granted the second point deduction was harsh but i honestly think the outcome would have been very different had he not illegally kneed the hell out of Thales, so you cant feel too sorry for him!
bob , that makes perfect sense and I agree with you that knee not only changed the score cards but the fighter as well.
as far as gsp if you paid much attention to his last bout with hughes you will see how easily he out wrestled hughes which for me means he can come equal too or close to fitch wrestling. i believe gsp is the better striker.
the only that will beat gsp is gsp himself. the first fight with matt hughes he was in shock and he didnt perform well. next he didnt do well with serra for the same reason maybe we will see a mentally sound gsp maybe we will see another basket case. i will put my money on gsp not letting anyone take that belt from him again for awhile. fitch will give him a run but then you will see the fight become so one sided as it progresses.
as much as everyone complained about the crappy fight card, a lot of these fights were great fights! i thought it was the money.
marquardt was robbed twice, he and leites should’ve gotten fight of the night. that was an incredible match and if not for the stupid ref, the decision would’ve went the right way.
BIG JOHN McCARTHY, PLEASE COME BACK!!!
i meant i thought it was WORTH the money…sorry.
i forgot to mention one thing, bisping is gay! anyone else see hime walking to the ring like a thug and acting like he’s a big deal. he needs to fight a real fighter so he can get his ass BEAT DOWN and be brought back down to earth.
They should also do an immediate rematch between Vera and Werdum, in my opinion.
Bisping cost me $100. No big deal but F Bispning for winning the one time I bet against him because I thought his head was getting big. Actually, his head is getting big. Apparently he is a huge star in England and he even “told” Guy Ritchie, “I’m the thug for your next gangster movie.” Wow….arogant with and ego…nice. I defended Bisping for a while but at this point it is time he fights either Leben or Quarry and with a win he would then have to fight Henderson, Franklin, Okami, or Marqaurdt to be near title contention. I have a feeling the UFC will give Bisping a title shot with one more win. Guess it doesn’t matter because Silva will kick the piss out of Bisping in about 13 seconds.
wiman tavares was good, but i think marquardt leites should’ve been given something as well. the dude pulled a pile driver.
kelvin all you do is slag bisping off like your a stalker or something. he is winning the fights he has had in good style and at least he trys to finish fights.
Herb Dean,,Dan Magiolita,,ohh the days of yesteryear with John McCarthy….please get him back!
BREAKING NEWS:
I just read on Fightline.com that the UFC has signed the #1 P4P Boxer in the world, Floyd Money Mayweather AKA Pretty Boy to a figting contract. Not only am I a big fan of MMA, I am also a big fan of Boxing and I read on Maxboxing.com last Friday, Mayweather just recently officially retired from boxing on last Friday. If the reports of Mayweather signing with UFC are true, It makes since now, why Dana White says he has some news that would rock the MMA World! THIS IS HUGE!!!
belly, kelvin makes good points about bisping. the only two fighters he’s faced that would be considered halfway decent whooped his ass, and yes i’m including hammil cuz we all saw that fight and we all know how it shoulda been scored. the guy is way too ****y for what he’s done which is beat up on no names to make his record look impressive. if you notice after his fights, he never says anything about wanting to fight top level guys. this only makes me think that he’s content to sit around pickin small time fighters off so he doesn’t ever get hurt. the dudes a pansy. if he had any confidence at all he’d at least express the desire to fight someone like franklin or hendo. but he won’t cuz he know’s he’ll get beat. i’d say he’s an ok fighter, but in a weak middle weight division, i dunno that he’s even top 5 for the ufc.
Well, Alves really, really pissed me off. If he really hurt his ankle ten days before the fight, he should have told it to the ufc, and request a catchweight contest. I think that extra 4 pounds really gave him a significant advantage. I’m not saying that otherwise Hughes would have won, no, I think Hughes would have lost anyway. But this way his win wasn’t fair and square. And if you don’t make weight, don’t beg for a ****ing title shot! And saying “I’ve been a good boy” pffff… Come on men!
So IMO he DOES NOT deserve a title shot, but I’d like to see him against the LOSER of Fitch/GSP, and if he wins that AND makes weight than he can get one.
PS: I’m not bashing on Alves, I think he is really talented and a good fighter, but the amount of BS that he was saying is completly unacceptable for me.
hope mayweather gets his fukin head kicked in, wat will he fight at 155?
Mayweather…come on..give him two years to train at 155 and BJ will still kick his a$$…
Best Mayweather fights(embrace your inner fanboy and post them all). All of these are based on the punchers chance.
1 Gamburian can take a shot if the shoulder holds.
2 Faber you get the elite and the all to popular
promoter trick of the race card. Pick Faber
3 Pulver-Mayweather Pulver loses if Maurice Smith
is in the training camp.
4 BJ Penn takes him.
5 Mayweather beat Stevenson up
6 Tyson Griffith(sp?) War like Tapia’s fight
with Buenlos (sp?)
Can’t think of anymore…

Correction: Should have read Pulver loses only if Mayweather hires Maurice Smith for training camp.
Why all the talk about Mayweather? He knows he cannot compete in the cage any better than a MMArtist would in the boxing ring. F Mayweather….he will require a ridiculous amount of money to do anything. Someone told me his deal with the WWE made him 20 million. I don’t believe it or care to research it but I do know he wants/gets way too much money in general to do anything….even breath. I’d rather see Pavlik train for MMA if any boxer were to try and make the transition right now.
ya, i don’t see mayweather makin the jump. too much to lose and not enough to gain. and he doesn’t seem like the type of guy that would do it cuz he loves to fight or for respect or any other reason than money… and the ufc ain’t gonna pick up that tab. so what are his two realistic options if this is even a real thing that might happen? live comfortably with the jillions of dollars he’s already got or put himself thru hell for some extra pocket change and tarnish that pretty record of his all while proving to the entire world that MMA is superiour to boxing.
p.s. mayweather signing with the ufc is about as likely as bisping taking on a real opponent. actually it’s even less than that. prolly more along the lines of bisping saying no to gay sex.
2girls1cup,
Is Bisping gay? Really…is he? If he is I did not know that. I do not think there is one openly queer fighter but there has got to be a few out there. They should come out of the cloet and challenge Cro Cop….I here he loves ‘em. You do know with Bisping’s speech it’s his native English tounge not a lisp don’t you?
from a sherdog post
group of investors led by Dana White have agreed in principle to purchase the UFC from Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta for an undisclosed amount. Included in this investment group is WWE’s Vince McMahon who will now own a minority stake in the company. They also have plans on taking the company public by years end.
At the press conference also expect Dana to announce that with the help of McMahon, who has extensive connections in the New York State Athletic Commission, they were able to get the UFC sanctioned in New York, and plan on having a show sometime in the winter at Madison Square Garden. That is all I have right now.
