Bas Rutten: Having Kimbo Slice Fight A Submission Specialist Would Be “Trouble”
By: Kris Karkoski | Apr 7, 2008
Chris Fries and The JDH of Tagg Radio’s The Lights Out Show interviewed mma legend Bas Rutten on their last show, and he had some interesting comments on his prodigy, Kimbo Slice. It seems Bas doesn’t think Kimbo is ready for the big time.
“…throwing him (Kimbo) up against a submission specialist is going to be trouble.”

It is good to see that Kimbo’s camp understands his limitations! This proves that Kimbo is a big time draw, but is not ready for the big time fights! It would be a disaster for the organization and Kimbo if he lost 2 or 3 fights in a row!
So your basically saying he is not a MMA fighter! No kidding. Kimbo is a joke! Go back to the streets!
more from the “no ****” desk… the sun is hot, women are confusing, and ice is cold…
but hey…good observation bas
great… bas has said what everyone else already understands thats exactly why i cant stand kimbo…has it not been proven yet that in MMA if you are one dementional your only going to make it so far…I wish he would fight a couple submission guys…the sooner he loses some fights and everyone forgets about him the happier i’ll be
i love watching kimbo fight guys on youtube but its different inside the cage. He reminds me of a brock lesner…Has alot of potential but not ready yet.
I think sub guys like Mir and Nog will give him fits. But a counter stiker like Chuck would KO him. And i think a ground and pounder like Brock and Heiring will get him too. So what i’m i saying…he my be the big name in EliteXC but he would beat any of the top HW in the UFC.
And yes i know chuck is a 205er but he has stated he would like to fight fedor and Nog.
bas says kimbo would be in trouble against a sub guy ide say he’ll be in trouble against an mma fighter haha
Ya no **** he would have trouble and EliteXC knows it too, So he gets D rated fighters with no ground game or chin for that matter. Everyone thinks he’s such a bad ass but he has not fought 1 quality fighter to date. He is an untested bully. Chucks’ comments were right on about him.
kimbo would be in trouble against any mma fighter who wasn’t washed up like the one’s he’s been fighting! what a joke!
“…he my be the big name in EliteXC but he would beat any of the top HW in the UFC.”
eddy, i hope you meant to say WOULDN”T!!
BISPING IS GAY!
Yes Kelvin i meant WOULDN’T and Bisping blows dudes for fun!
let’s see lee vs the spider.
Kimbo Slice would knock out Chuck Liddell. You all need to give him some credit. He has beaten everyone he’s fought. Sean Gannon cheated by using knees and elbows. Kimbo used his submission skills to make world class boxer Ray Mercer tap out. If he fought Frank Mir 6 months from now he could probably submit Mir too.
Kimbo probably needs another year or two of fighting and training before he can beat Couture and Fedor Emelianenko. Who else in all of MMA could be as good as Kimbo is with just a year of MMA training?
Kimbo will be the one fighter to take MMA mainstream.
He is an exciting fighter with good boxing skills. He’s not just a street fighter in there throwing wild haymakers. He has an ameture boxing background but now just needs to learn the other disciplines needed to be a really good fighter in MMA. He is no different from any other fighter that is good in one area such as wrestling, but needs to work on the other areas of their game to be successful in the sport. We all know that he is green and still needs to develope in other techniques besides his boxing skills, but you can’t deny the fact that he is exiting and he generates a buzz. It’s just great marketing by EliteXC to take advantage of the “newness” that he brings to the sport. I say they put him in with a few more stand up bangers but younger guys no more of these over the hill, over 40 guys and then put him in against a submission guy after he’s picked up a few more exciting wins by vicious knock out.
I question Kimbos conditioning more than anything else!
Brock is not a good ground and pound fighter. Against Mir he didn’t throw any left punches once on the ground in a dominate position. Thats very typical of an unexperienced fighter to get “right hand happy” once they connect with one good one.
Saying that Kimbo is terrible is as bad as saying that he’s great. We haven’t seen him tested to know yet. We can draw assumptions based on what we have seen, and now with this from Bas, but let’s give the guy a break. He’s living a dream for many of us, I say best of luck to him!
