Sherk Remains 155-lb. Champion (For Now)
By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Dec 7, 2007
Despite early promises to the strip the lightweight title away from Sean Sherk if his steroid suspension was upheld the UFC has yet to make a formal announcement regarding the future of the division, specifically whether or not current champion Sean Sherk will be stripped of the title. Steve Seivert of The Houston Chronicle contacted UFC officials who confirmed that Sherk remains the promotion’s champion.
With no official comment made on Sherk’s reduced suspension it is hard to determine what direction the promotion will go. However, if the past is any indication, Sherk will likely be stripped of the lightweight belt and will fight the winner of January’s bout between BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson in mid-2008 in an attempt to reclaim his title.

Dana White says he keeps it and that is final.
Mr. B.J. “I only want to fight 2-times a year” Penn will have to deal with it.
Yeah, im basically tired of this whole thing.
Hey Kris…I heard a rumor that Jon Fitch is going to be fighting Akihiro Gono soon…is this true?
Since the incredible rebirth of the UFC, I have been been worried that the management will follow boxing’s example and give up competitive integrity for the all mighty dollar. They are proving to be as shortsighted in failing to protect the value of their product in order to get as much money right now. This attitude is the same problem that drove myself and many others from boxing. UFC should be careful not to give those who hate the sport an excuse to stifle its growth, and more importantly to give its fans what they expect to see, clean, honest fights.
i think sherk has been though alot having to fight at 170 trying to fight much larger then himself if he is to keep his title i think a fight with him and penn would be great seeing how sherk likes to g@p his oponents i think that having bj on his back is a different thing then having most people on the floor with his great submissions plus bj also has better conditioning at 155 i think pj is really the uncrowned champ at 155 ever since his 1st fight with pulver wheen he had jens tapping out at the bell.
Sean Sherk should get stripped. Just because he got a reduced sentence due to the CSAC’s inadiquacy doesn’t change the fact that he cheated. Cheaters like Sherk deserve to have there titles and records taken away. Fitch vs Gono better not be going down. I mean yes Gono beat Maccaroy or whatever his name was in Jersey with a crazy armbar but he’s a step down for Fitch. Fitch needs to fight for the title soon especially if Matt Serras out for the long term.
Yeah FiXxer, he was offered that fight according to rumors but he wants Karo instead. I can’t blame him, he has little to gain should he beat Gono but a win against Karo def. puts him in the no. 1 contender spot. We’ll see.
If I was Tim Sylvia, I’d be extremely upset with the UFC, especially he got his title stripped after testing positive for steroids. Sherk lost some respect for cheating, let him earn it back like Sylvia did and fight for it.
this is dumb! how does everyone think the prospected fight between penn and sherk would go? i know penn is a mores skilled fighter, but if he doesnt finish in 2 rounds… i think he has no chance.
then with that will sherk and penn fight because it would be stupid if they have stevenson and penn fight when sherk is back a ready 2 fight why still have the interim??
From here on out, the UFC needs to do internal testing of some sort. If a fighter tests dirty, suspension and probation(monthly tests) are in order. Sherk should be stripped. How many fighters know to use that arguement (I didn’t know what I was taking = they told me it was pencil shavings dad)
Interim = 5 round fights instead of 3 rounds. It’s the reason GSP/Hughes is an interim bout. Penn vs Joe, winner faces Sherk. All 5 rounders, which I think is better for us. Let him keep the belt, he would have fought the winner later in 2008 once his original suspension would have been lifted anyways. I may be naive, but I actually believe Sherk when he said he didn’t knowingly take a banned substance. Apparently Dana is of the same belief.
^^^agreed w/ you there, and like some commentor on the houston chronicle article said, 12/g of it or w/e is not through the roof and quite plausible to have occuredsimply w/ the help of supplements and so on.
