UFC Roundup: News on Hawaii Event, Cro Cop, and More
By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Oct 5, 2007
- White wants to run a show in Hawaii next year as soon as regulation is in place. The Penn-Pulver fight did a 20.8 rating on the island, bigger than everything except American Idol.
- The company is planning to make a strong push for the UFC brand in Japan. One wonders if it would make sense to push the WEC in the market. With its lighter weight classes, it would be more friendly to Japanese fighters.
- Cro Cop hasn’t been taking the company’s phone calls of late and his future is very much in doubt. With such a high downside guarantee to go with his lackluster performance, he has become very expendable.
- Sean Sherk passed a lie detector test saying that he did not knowingly use steroids. While certainly not conclusive, it can’t hurt his chances at getting his suspension over turned or at the very least reduced.
- Dan Henderson wants to stay at 205 while the UFC wants him to drop to 185 for another unification match. Henderson only has one fight left on his current contract.

I can’t understand why Henderson is being so stubborn and not wanting to drop down to Middleweight? He had his shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight Title and failed. He had a chance to unify the belts and he wasn’t able to.
Henderson, even if he is successful at Light Heavyweight won’t get a title shot anytime soon, especially since he had his chance and lost. The fight wasn’t exciting and I doubt the fans will want to pay forty dollars to see him fight Rampage for the title again.
If Henderson drops down to Middleweight; he would probably get an immediate title shot due to the lack of depth in the division.
It makes sense for Hendo NOT to move down and fight at middle weight because then he is more valuable when the UFC resigns him after his next fight and can get more money.
People like you are not fans of MMA. Hendo/Page not an exciting fight? Were you in a coma? That’s, by far, the best fight in the last 6 months. Just because nobody got knocked out doesn’t mean it wasn’t an amazing fight.
I agree 100% with “G”, dumb comment by Red whom is probably a Generation-TUF guy. Hendo vs anyone is by far more appealing than a Rashad vs Bisping main event. “NO KO-SWING FOR THE FENCE TYPE OF FIGHT GUYS? LETS BOO.” attitude makes me sick.
I’m a huge Henderson fan, but I agree with you Red. He looked over-matched in the fight against Rampage, and I think he is much better suited at 185 anyway. There is no doubt that his first UFC middleweight fight would be a title bout, because he is still the Pride Welterweight Champ (185 not the 170 like in the UFC) and the UFC wants to unify the belt as soon as possible.

I thought that Hendo looked great for his first fight in the UFC. Look at fighters, like Shogun or CroCop or Rampage, whose first fight in the UFC was lackluster. The reborn Rampage is a beast I might add. Not to mention that Hendo’s wife had just had a baby and he was not focused on fighting with a new addition to his family. Hendo asked Dana for an extension, but was denied. So Hendo couldn’t train properly. Look at Rampage, he broke his giant mugfist against Hendo’s head, what a chin. And if Hendo had more time to train and had his cardio up more I think that the fight would have been over when Hendo had Rampage in the crucifix position. So, I wouldn’t say that Hendo will venturing very far from the 205 pound title picture.
Yeah, what’s up with Hendo’s rock-solid head? That’s pretty wild. After the fight, you could see Rampage laughing it up with Hendo about how he got hurt punching Hendo’s face, though right after the fight Rampage said he’d punched Dan’s head. Hendo must be one tough badass. I thought Hendo vs. Rampage was a great fight.
I hope the Ortiz vs. Hendo rumors turn out to be true. Ortiz claims to be training better, and implied that he made Griffin and Evans look good by his poor training and injuries in the past. One thing is for sure, he better come in top shape if he plans on scrappin’ with Hendo.

I would like to see Hendersen unify the title at middleweight, but maybe he wants to prove himself at a higher weight. I believe it’s his choice. He is a top tear fighter….. As far as Cro-Cop, he may be done. Fighters have figured him out. Japan would be very cool. They could have a tourny over there….. I still think Sherk is full of it. Its not hard to pass a lie detector test when you have been lying to yourself for years.
SCOTCHYDOW - There are so many immature assumptions built into your disrespectful comment about Sherk. You don’t know him. You don’t know anyone who knows him. You’ve read the same snippets on the MMA sites that the rest of us have read. I’m not even a fan. But I respect him. I suggest you do the same. He gets his day in “court” at the end of October. Till then, keep your 12-year-old comments to yourself.
I don’t know why you consider them immature assumptions. You do not get a stacked body like Sherk has naturaly. You don’t fail a drug test without doing steroids. The test consists of not just 1, but 2 samples, and I do not appriciate you suggesting me to show this guy respect. I was a fan of Sherk, but I tend to lose respect for a fighter when they fail a drug test for steroids (especially a champ), and then don’t come clean. I am not assuming anything. He failed the test. You are assuming that a man, who is phenominal shape, says he is very careful about what he puts in his body, READS ALL OF THE LABELS ON EVERYTHING HE EATS OR TAKES, didn’t know what he was taking, or that it had a banned substance in it. His body doesn’t look like a person who just accidentally took roids once either. You are entitled to an opinion, but I suggest you respect my right to my own.
SCOTCHYDOW - You’re wrong. False positives are not uncommon in sports, though obviously much rarer than true positives. Sherk was not nearly as far above “normal” as others whose tests could not even be contested. Royce Gracie, for example. 50x above normal levels. No wonder Royce did not contest. Furthermore, Sherk’s positive was for a substance that occurs naturally in the body.
Your comments are immature and presumptuous. Not only have you presumed conscious guilt on his part, you have also maligned his character by implying that he is simply a pathological liar and that he has lied for years.
You write as though you are full of knowledge, but you know only what you have read.
Unlike you, I was never a fan of Sherk. But I respect these fighters until they are PROVEN to be without honor. Sherk has not been proven to be without honor.
Go back and read through the information regarding roid use, Sherk’s specific roid positive, false positives in general, comments about his character as a person, and then come back with something intelligent to say.
cro cop is over. ufc in hawaii and japan would rock i think. sherk v penn would be the best lightweight fight ever
I’d rather see Hendo hang out in the LHW division a little longer. There are too many very good matches. I suspect the next match for Hendo will be Tito. I suspect the next match for Liddell will be Wandy.
I just don’t think the Wanderlei/Chuck fight will be as great as it would have been 2-4 years ago. I think it is a very dangerous fight for Chuck, but also a great way for Silva to re-start his career in the UFC. I think Chuck has possiblly been put on the back burners with back to back losses. I would also like to see Hendo succeed in the UFC’s lightheavyweight division, but I think the middleweight titles need to be unified also. I think he would be dominant at that weight, and I think he will suffer more losses at lightheavy.
P.S. Sorry about the **** comment, but you were insulting me long before that. It was unnecessary, but let’s try to keep it cicil, ehh.
(sp)civil
You fail to understand the main point of my entry. You are trying to start a war over an opinion of mine. You are insulting my intelligence on a matter of unwaivering opinion, not smarts. I do not know what you are trying to gain here, because my OPINION is going to stay the same, as obviousely yours will not change. I could give 2 ****s about your views, and I don’t know why mine have such an effect on you. I haven’t once gotten personal (unless you in fact are Sean Sherk, then you have real problems because you are not even a fan of yourself) Move on, get over it, I am not trying to change your mind, don’t insult mine.
Your words, bro:
“I still think Sherk is full of it. Its not hard to pass a lie detector test when you have been lying to yourself for years.”
Did I miss something? That was an insult to character, not a comment about evidence. Don’t insult your own intelligence.
What, are you Sherks lawyer? I didn’t say “I didn’t say anything about Sherk.” I said I didn’t say anything about you. The only one insulting my intelligence is you. You are taking my opinion about Sherk, and his POSITIVE STEROID TEST personally. You obviously have nothing better to do but waste your time on this dead subject. Maybe he will win his appeal. Good for him. Does it change the fact that I (key word there, I) believe he is guilty. I didn’t know my opinion had so much power. It’s OK sweetheart, there are disagreements in every relationship, and just because you are being a little ****, doesn’t mean I don’t still care.
I was a fan of Cro Cop prior to his stint in the UFC. I’m still a fan, but I guess I’m not a fan of “UFC Cro Cop”. It seems like he’s had a tough time adjusting to the new paradigm. I’ve seen it suggested elsewhere that he could drop to LHW without much problem. I think his walking weight is around 220 lbs. A 15 lb drop to LHW could make a big difference. Imagine Cro Cop vs. Liddell. Assuming Liddell continues fighting for a while.
You see, here is the problem I have with the whole issue. Everybody has seen Sherk’s trainning, and how proud he is of what he puts in his body. Seen him reading all of the labels on everything he buys. Everybody knows how much muscle can be packed onto a body frame with natural, and non-contraband substances. I don’t believe that with just legal substances, and workouts, a person can build a body structure like Sherk has. Even if he wins his appeal, I still think he has used steroids in the past, if not recent history, therefor believe he is “lying to himself”. I don’t like to see a naturally gifted and talented athlete throw away such a promissing (and profitable) career for something so avoidable. That is my opinion and where it has its base.
Damn…there is a war going on in here! SCOTCHYDOW vs MMACrossfire….. LEZ GET IT OOOON

i hear what alot of ppl are saying about sherk using roids, and i can sympathize. I mean, hes HUGE, and he failed the test, so it is likely he took steroids. however, being a fan of his i have looked into the steroid that he used, and there are a couple things about that that could get him off the hook, that specific roid can occur naturally in the body, and with all those supplements in his body and that workout regimen, it’s not really that far-fetched that that happened. RE the polygraph, sure its not 100% foolproof, and according to some not even 60%, but it is a start, its like, OK, i took a polygraph, see? now i’ll show you something else that contributes to my innocence…etc. I personally know ppl who are that big, and ill be damned if they’ve ever done the juice. i also know over ppl whose body produces certain chemicals naturally in levels that are unhealthy or dangerous, and theyve taken meds for that. same situation, no. is it applicable, im guessing maybe.
thats just my two cents.
then again, it is definetaly very possible he took the juice and is a liar,in which case ill lose all respect for him, but innocent until proven guilty, and a failed test does not mean DEFINATELY guilty
“That’s, by far, the best fight in the last 6 months. Just because nobody got knocked out doesn’t mean it wasn’t an amazing fight.”
G you don’t really believe that was the BEST fight in the last 6 months do you? If you do, then you obviously haven’t watched some of the amazing lightweight tilts that have taken place. I thought it was a great fight, with lots of action, and a tremendous amount of skill, but the best no way. They had a torrid pace going for the first 2.5 rounds, then Hendo, for whatever reason, kind of dropped off. Be it an injury, fatigue, or even the physical prowess of a dominant Rampage, the fight did lose some excitement, and everybody knew who was going to win. Hendo will most certainly be back, and the fight with Tito would be a phenomenal fight. I realize for a number of reasons, all valid too, that Hedno wants to fight at light-heavyweight, but I just think he’d be unstoppable at 185 in the UFC. He will always be near the top of the food chain in whatever class he fights in, but I just don’t see him being the top dawg at 205. And that’s the whole point right? To be the best and have the belt?

i would like to know if any of you are actual fighters that are talking in these chat rooms, b/c i am and i before i started training i thought it was ok to try and judge fighters but unless you’ve done it you have no right to boo any fighter or make judgement against them. and sherk he is a freak of nature, i dont think he has taken roids he trains like an animal, there are plenty of huge guys that are accused of this, yes he did fail a test but it could be wrong and im on his side until hes proven guilty
MMACrossfire is not only a jerk on this forum, but on several others. He does the same garbage on http://www.mmajunkie.com. Tells people their opinions are wrong and speaks with authority. In real life this guy is 5′7″ and his name is Lance Zechinato.
To the coward who posted last on this forum (31-Dec-2007 at 9:53 am):
After almost a year, I just found your post. You are long gone, and I’m sure you will never see this reply. Very likely, you are same coward who posted on my MMA blog at the time of your above comment. (Now I know where you came from.)
It is so easy to find info on the Web. It is/was no secret that I have an MMA blog…. a blog I don’t even have time to keep up. I am all over the Web, in fact. I have been for years. No mystery there.
I’m not sure why you took such offense over a debate, other than it bothers you that I wouldn’t let disrespectful smack talk about Sherk go unanswered.
