UFC 84: Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida Still On
Posted by Kris Karkoski on Feb 19, 2008 at 9:34 am ET54 Comments
Rumors have been circulating in recent days, based on a Renato Sobral interview with PunchDrunkGamer.com, that Tito Ortiz would no longer be facing Lyoto Machida at UFC 84 on May 24th in Las Vegas.
However, MMAFrenzy.com has learned from Chris Fries, co-host of The Lights Out Show on Tagg Radio, that the fight will go on as scheduled. Fries spoke with Machida’s manager, Ed Soares, who confirmed with UFC matchmaker Joe Silva that contracts for the bout have been signed and the fight is a “go”.

all i can say is that im a big fan of tito and will be very pissed off if dana lets him go, as for this fight tito is to big an strong for machida and will make him look like a b**** when he takes him down an make him eat elbows until the ref stops is,
GO TITO
Im all for keeping big named fighters…but im sorry, Tito, RIGHT NOW, ranks right up there with cro cop…he needs to beat Machida to prove me wrong…. if you disagree, just think…his last fights….and do not count the shamrock fights.. those were gimme fights….but you have Liddell, where he was dominated….you have Forrest where he barely won, and some thought he actually lost that fight…he also had Rashad Evans and he had a draw…where some thought he lost that one too…. (those fights arent in order, obviously)
So yea, a big name and 2 reality stars…then tito had to come out and say he wasn’t 100% and thats the only reason why those fights were close… PLEASE…tito was a stud but is getting older and isnt as good as he was….so its a catch 22 for Dana….do you pay big bucks to a guy who can, for now, draw in people bc of his name…..or do you pay big bucks to a guy who isnt very impressive anymore and will soon start to lose most matches he is in…or do you just cut your losses…quit while you are ahead?
I say let Tito go – he will want more money, and he isnt even top 5 in his class..
I will always pay money to watch a Tito fight. But he really does need to pull this win off to re-claim his spot amongst the big dogs and prove his doubters wrong. If not then he will be on a downward spiral in mma. He’s still a beast and his training regime is sick. To me hes still young at 33 and should have at least another 5-6 strong years in him. All I wanna see is the ground and pounding days come back. The fire in his eyes that scared opponents. He doesnt seem to faze anyone these days and I dont think alot of fighters could give two flying f***s about him. To be fair if he wouldnt have grabbed the cage in the fight with evans he would have walked away with a win, and evans aint no chump.
I’m on the fence with both of these guys…but for some reason I have a hunch that Tito will step up due to the pressure of his expiring contract and really lay it all out. It’s too bad Tito wasn’t closer to 185…he could bring some ‘drama’ to that weight class
I could be wrong…but my assessment of Tito is that he has become a pretty boy who is more concerned with his appearance…and health (not meaning that in a bad way) than he is with winning fights…and i dont think he wants to fight much longer…i could see him wanting all this money but then pretend to be hurt….etc.. even though im bashing him, im truly a fan of his… he was at one time very exciting and one of the best to get into the octagon….but if he loses to machida then he wont fight again in the UFC, and i would be surprised if he fought again! (bc of his business he has now…he might want to focus on that)
I am with Jason N on this one. You have to win in the UFC otherwise it’s bye bye. I’ve loved Tito most of his career but it’s time to win. The UFC has the vast majority of prime talent in mma and likely has an unborn star on their roster of fighters right now. Therefore, to keep the ball rolling the UFC cannot afford to keep on a big name fighter that loses. There is nothing new and exciting about that. Tito, Sylvia, Cro Cop and even Randy need to reexamine the situation.
Im with you too except for Randy… though he is 44, the guy has proven he can still win, and is possibly on top of his game NOW….so this guy should be resigned….he wants Fedor…well why not Noguera?? That would be a great match up if you ask me…
As for Sylvia…yea, he is a boring fighter, but regardless, he still wins…except his last fight, but yea…the guy can still beat most of the heavy weights….I say in June, when Liddell fights sho gun…put on that card the winners and losers from this last card…Noguera vs Mir and Lesnar vs Sylvia….especially with that trash talk from Sylvia saying Lesnar shouldnt be making more money..and Lesnar saying Sylvia should be embarassed for letting a small guy (Randy) come up and beat him….that would be a great fight!
i agree with jason N. i will be getting tickets to the event in june so those other fights will be great to watch even tho mir an nog will be boreing ide still like to see who wins, lesnar an sylvia will be a war but ide have to pick tim and were would that leave lesnar?
I think Tito will definitely win this fight with Machida. I have a good feeling he is going to slam him too! If Dana is willing to pay Brock Lesnar $250K b/c he can bring in a larger audience he should be willing to pay Tito Ortiz some big bucks too. Granted his last fight with Rashad was a draw but there is no way anyone can say that he lost that fight, Rashad decided to fight in the last 30 seconds of the 3rd round, I was not impressed with him at all. Tito is a big draw, and we all know that if he were to move to another fighting organization he’d make a lot more money and probably even take a huge number of UFC fans with him.
i dont see lesnar losing again until he faces a guy who is mainly BJJ…i think he would dominate Sylvia…I see him just rushing guys, overwhelming them and then making them tap to strikes….or just knock them out….I think Mir was lucky that the fight was paused….bc he was seconds away from having it stopped!!
That Mazzigatti needs to resign…he screwed that fight and he screwed razor rob in his WEC fight.. in the 3rd round, razor was coming back and starting to turn the tables and he let Varner CALL TIME OUT to get his mouth piece, then the momentum went back to Varner…i hate it when i am about to watch a fight and he is the ref
Tito Is a Hudge reason why this sport is what it is today. If there is no respect for tito, there is not much respect for the fans or the sport in the beginning. Tito Has been around since UFC 13 and made the sport very popular with his winning ways and his ground and pound. Tito even brought Dana into the sport and this is the reason why UFC is UFC. Though he is not winning impressivly now, he still is a legend and a good fighter, Tito can not be counted out of this fight. He needs to win impressivly to stay alive.
I’d like to see Tito replace Goldberg for commentating.
I agree that Tito helped build the UFC. But I think Shamrock did as well, and I am glad he is gone. Tito definately needs a win to stay in the UFC…but even with a win (that I don’t think he will get, Machida is for real guys) I think he uis leaving. Either way, he has had some EPIC BATTLES in the octagon, and could be a HALL OF FAMER someday.
As far as “Razor” Rob getting screwed…..Varner was KICKING HIS ASS. “Razor” looked out of shape, and got VICIOUSLY KOed. That whole WEC card was great though.
Sylvia vs Lesnar makes a great deal of sense. Sylvia is on his way out, and they need to get Lesnar a credibal opponent. I say Lesnar wins, but Tim has shinned in the past-great fight.
Ok a couple things…
Scotch..you took the words out of my mouth on Shamrock..that was going to be my comeback too… I think Shamrock did the same if not more for the sport…he’s been around since UFC 1… But there is a time when enough is enough, and he is now off somewhere else…which is fine by me…Like Tito, Im glad he did what he did for the sport, but its now time to move on and let other talented fighters shine, so they can become the next Tito…Shamrock, etc….
As for WEC…yea, Razor was losing going into the 3rd round, but watch that 3rd round again before you go off like that….razor was KICKING varner’s ass! He landed some HARD shots and it ROCKED Varner…so hard he knocked him mouth piece out….. and if the fight was not stopped due to a f’n time out, razor, i think, would have eventually stopped him…. but since the ref granted him a TO…that gave him precious seconds to recover…to semi cool off razor, and the momentum shifted back to Varner and he ended it with an amazing KO….but if there was no stoppage, i truly dont think the fight wouldve ended that way, atleast not in the 3rd….if Varner wouldve escaped the 3rd, he couldve eventually knocked out Razor, but we will never know…
Ok, the mazz. thing we need somebody to blame when the guy we want to win doesn’t. As for the Tito thing if we are saying at 33 he is washed bc his record is 1-1-1 granted not impressive fights. Chuck is 2-2 in his last 4 isn’t he. Shamrock was an amazing fighter watched him from beginning, but his last fights he was taking serious beatings. I feel he stood a chance at perm. damage. If Tim could keep it on the feet for a round, he would ko Lesnar. Although these are just my opinions.
i dont blame mazz bc i wanted razor to win… hell its the WEC…i could give a rats ass who wins….honestly i wanted all underdogs to win, and in that fight, varner was the underdog…what i do want is a fair fight and let the fighters fight..and not have the ref interrupt it unless its obvious for a ref stoppage….in that case, it was not needed nor should have been allowed!
The problem I have with your guys’ view on the Varner/Mcoughla(or how ever it’s spelled) is this. When a mouth guard is out, the refaree is SUPPOSED to find a point when the fighters are seperated to get the mouth piece back in(when it’s knocked out, not spit out to breath) I think that it is “Razor’s” fault for not staying on him when he was “calling time out”. Remember Trigg/Hughes II? Remember when Trigg kicked Hughes SQUARE IN THE NUTTS. Hughes tried to call time out, but Trigg (being smarter than he is givin credit for) jumped on Hughes knowing that you don’t stop til the refaree says so. I agree he was in a bad place, but they were standing, and Varner pulled away, and Razor Rob backed off when Varner said time out- Rob’s bad in my book. Personally, I really don’t care, but I love the highlight reel KO.
Jason N,
The only reason I said Randy is because he wants Fedor and only Fedor. If that is the case he only wants one more fight and then he’s done??? His actions leave a lot to be explained. I love Randy and wish he stayed with the UFC but if he only wants to fight Fedor then let him go do it. What the hell will he do after? I know the UFC heavy weight division is weak but I do not believe that will be hard to change. In any case, Randy will be missed in the UFC big time. The UFC has got to keep movin’ and cannot be hung up on one fighter. Even Randy. It’s a business. Maybe Sean Sherk and Tyson Griffin can move up to heavy weight. That would be 10 times cooler than Bimbo Slice and Tank Abbot.
I diffently agree with alot of you Tito did bring alot to the mma world. The one thing people have forgotten about Tito, that he is the bad boy of Hunnington beach. I think thats the problem with UFC. He didn’t respect the camp the fighter came from (ex Shamrock’s Lion Den). Which made for entertament. I feel if Dana wanted more WWE fans it needs more “DRAMA”. Thats why the tv show Ultimate Fighter did so well. Which is why we still remember Tito. If more camp started going againist another with there fighter, more people would start watching. (ex IFL just not with the gay colors)
i think this is it for tito. he needs a big performance to justify a new contract because no one deserves a free ride.he is so far out of title picture at the mo. as for machida we will find out where he is at but i think his performances have got better and better and tito may have his hands full.
this is what i dont get right people are saying that tito is washed up an doesn’t want to fight and is not in the top 5 LH but on the other hand there saying machida is a top 5 LH but… (now stay with me on this one) there saying they will no were machida is after the tito fight i mean WTF is going on there surly if people think machida is ranked higher then tito then they wont base how good a fighter he is on this match,
i hate to sound like a stuck record here but tito is a top 5 LH and will make mince meat out of machida the only people i would back to beat tito in the LH ufc divison is chuck, rampage thats for def the other 3 guys that i wouldn’t be able to call is wandi, shogun and thiago silva,
i welcome others peoples views an look forward to hereing them!!
My opinion on this fight is that Tito needs to win and he will…I see Machida being overpowered. If Tito loses…he’s not retiring…he has his website which mainly gets promoted when he fights and he has his book coming out in June….so this fight even though he’s talking **** and everything about dana white…he knows he needs to win and work out some kind of contract….and also he needs to win by stoppage…not a split decision…if he stops machida in the first..and machida is supposed to be top 5….then they need to sign him…also rumor is jardine vs wanderlei might be added to this card….best card ever
Shamrock was never the type of champion Tito was and did not make such a large impact like Tito. Royce Gracie made the most impact in the beginning, as he was unstoppable in the first few years. Sure Shamrock helped it grow as the lions Den was a feared tranning camp, but When Tito came into the sport it grew probablly the most it has since it started with the exception of the last few years. All I ever heard was Tito this and Tito that, look how bad ass Tito is… untill Randy Spanked him literally. Now we still here of Tito because he is only 33 yrs old and is still capable of winning. I dont know that there are nearly as much of a fan base still till today for Shamrock compared to what Tito has. The guy is loosing more fans if he does not win Machida. Go Tito. Tito is a legend in my book at 33 yrs. old
Yes, Tito is a legend..thats obvious….but people have to stop looking in the past! Its like saying the Yankees are the most dominating Baseball team…really? When was the last time they actually won it all???? Same with Tito.. when was the last time he was champ? He is NOT a top 5 fighter, I’m sorry. Machida IS ranked higher because he has beat some quality fighters in his career and is undefeated. In my opinion, the LH division looks like this…
Rampage, Forrest (by default, according to UFC, not me personally thinking he is), Thiago Silva, Rashad Evans, Liddell, Machida, Jardine, Tito, Wanderlei, Sho Gun
Thats my top 10 – I know people will disagree – thats the point of this message board…but in my eyes, after the top 2, I think Thiago is #3 bc he looks very impressive..and he destroyed Houston Alexander who people thought could be the next champ soon….then I think Rashad…but I am still not impressed with him, but you cant really rank people higher than him…like Tito since Tito didnt beat him…then Liddell…just for the name sake and he won his last fight vs a top fighter…he is slipping, but the win over Wanderlei gave him a HUGE boost…then its a toss up between Machida and Jardine…I just gave it to Machida bc he is undefeated and beat a highly talked about Sokoudjou….then the final 3 are Tito, Silva and Sho Gun….all 3 great fighters, but havent been impressive in their last showings so they HAD to drop down, thats how it works!! Just like NCAA Basketball…if Memphis loses this weekend, they CANT stay #1…
Oh and another thing….since Tito has this beef with Dana…..do you think he will put that fight with Machida on the undercard of this PPV like he is doing to Arlovski?!?!?!
JK…
I agree that Tito needs this fight. But I also see some long term problems with him moving forward in this division now…. The Evans fights is debatable… but when you look at guys in that division I see a handful that I don’t believe he has more than a punchers chance at beating. Sort of stalemates is career.
It’s only with one opponent really… but sort of like what Rich is facing now with Anderson…only in that case someone will come along who’s style nullifies Anderson’s but is susceptible to Rich’s.
I am a huge Tito fan and thats not gonna change BUT i agree at lhw wit the likes of rampage at the top of the hill hes done as a lhw in the ufc but wat about MW ive been sayin this since anderson silva destroyed franklin “y doesnt tito drop down to middleweight.” hed b a beast at 185(hes huge at 205) and hes another fighter with the right style to beat the spider a good wrestler thats got a solid base on the ground and is great at GnP and wont b easily submitted the only problem is his chin it doesnt appear to b a solid one(Liddel 1&2, Cote) if he can protect his jaw while makin sure the fight stays on the ground tito much like hendo has a good chance of winning
and dont get me wrong im not sayin tito or hendo will beat the spider im just sayin they stand a betta chance wit there style of winning then a chris leben or franklin
Well…I will say Hendo WILL beat silva…he is hyped up way too much by Dana… dont get me wrong, Silva is no chump…but he has defeated chumps….Franklin was/is decent…but look at his competition….Leban….not that great… and nate the great…..please….thats who Silva has fought, oh and our native South Dakota boy Travis Lutter…..now Silva has to fight a big name stud who can bang as well as he can wrestle…i think Silva goes down….but thats a whole different discussion!
im sry Jason but i have to disagree ive seen both men fight and i believe that if there should b any hype the hype should b all over Silva the man is in the top 5 for everyones pound for pound list hes a great striker wit excellent jitz skills to go wit the strikes and hes got a solid chin watch his fights and he always gets cracked b4 he wakes up and starts layin a beatin on the guy. Now Hendo do i believe Hendo can beat Silva? Yes like i said before he has the best style to match up wit Silva hes a big guy hes got iron for a jaw hes got a solid right hand his greco-roman skills r on point and hes got a solid base that will b hard to move if he gets on top and he looks like hed b tough to catch a submission on but wit all that said i still say that the onslaught that anderson silva brings is too much for hendo to handle
dont get me wrong..when i said what i said, it wasnt a knock to silva…im not saying he is not good…but the guy has yet to be tested… he has fought dbl A talent at best….Im sorry, if there are Rich Franklin fans out there…but the guy has never impressed me…i do think silva is deserving of the belt…i do think he is the best MW…but now that hendo dropped to MW…I think he is the best, but regardless…its going to be 1 hell of a fight…
ill agree wit that it should b a war
I think that Jardine deserves to be higher ranked than Liddel because it was fairly recent that he beat him. And I also think he should be ranked higher than Rashad Evans. The fight in the division that needs to happen for both fighters is Jardine vs Evans. These two are REALLY GOOD FRIENDS and trainning partners, but they are floated back and fourth on the rankings that we (and they) need to know which one deserves the top five ranking. I can’t see both of them being in there. Evans went to a draw with Ortiz(LOST) so I am not sure why he gets such credit without Tito being “top 5″ as most of you say. Now Jardine beat Liddel down. Sure he got KOed by Alexander, but he BEAT LIDELL DOWN. Now, I have been a fan of Tito’s for years, but have never been unrealistic. I knew he would loose to Couture (in fact got in an actual fight with an aquantence of mine because of it.I wound up with some chipped teeth-NO MOUTH GUARD) Machida is the real deal. If Tito doesn’t come in 110%, he’s going to loose.
Jardine does NOT deserve to be higher than rashad…haha…why would you even think that?! Why do I say that? Well lets see..Rashad has 0 losses…Jardine has lost….Rashad BEAT Jardine…yes it was on the reality show, but regardless, he BEAT Jardine…
I guess I could juggle Jardine and Liddell since he did beat Liddell…but I think that was a fluke to be honest, I think Chuck just over looked him and if they fought again, it would be different…but we may never know…as for now, Liddell lost….but my reasoning he is higher than Jardine, is that he has defeated more quality fighters than Jardine has fought..period.. so I give the edge…but hey, its my opinion…im not the official ranker!!
Well really when couture steps in the cage do u eva go against him? NO!!!
now i agree that jardine and rashads friendship is makin the debate at 205 tougher cuz they get flip flopped in and out of the top 5 yes on the one hand rashad drawed wit tito but did he look impressive enough to put him near the top dogs? no and i feel the same wit jardine he got stomped by alexander and then had a semi good preformance against a washed up Liddel(although it appears chucks turned things around wit his war wit wandi) so how would i seperate these 2 well lets 1st look at there records Rashad 16-0-1 compared to Jardines 13-4-1 point rashad now lets look at common opponents they did fight on the show wit rashad winning they both fought Stephen Bonner wit Rashad winning a decision and Jardine losing point rashad we all kno about there big name fights and how they went against tito and chuck so ill skip that point Jardine and finally whos been more impressive in there victorys and in my personal opinion Rashads looked betta then jardine has wit the highlight reel kick to Salomon and the impressive ko of jason lambert
OK, your opinion is as good as mine, but I honestly don’t count (and neither do the record books) wins or losses from TUF. I honestly think Jardine got screwed in the decision loss to Bonner, but a decision is an average of three other opinions. I think that Forrest would stomp a ****-hole in either of them, I am pretty sure Houston Alexander would woop Rashad as badly as he did Jardine, but again- They should fight to prove one of us wrong?!?!?!
first of all how can a fighter be washed up and then not washed up. now I am a Tito fan big time and he will dominate. That said, the only arg. I have is the ranking of Jardine. He beat both Chuck, and Forrest call it a fluke, but if you do then the fights between Tito, and Forrest, Tito and Evans while he was hurt and he did have surg. were flukes. I know Jardine lost to Houston. He did beat those other two and neither was far enough back not to count. Speaking about talent they fought did Evans beat both of those. By the way Forrest is not using fights #2 I also don’t understand how anyone else could say he is. He lost to a guy some say is ranked #7. By the way who did he beat to get there. just my opinion
he beat sho gun to get there….and i will be the 1st to say i think it should be jardine fighting rampage, not forrest….but i also think the reality show had something to do with it too.. bc if you think about it, im sure they wanted rampage the whole time….and then the fact that forrest just beat sho gun put him up there with Jardine…and they prob asked themselves, who would be better for the show…Forrest or Jardine!?!….but thats just my opinion…
Since they have those 2 top (rampage Forrest), thats my top 2…after that, i gave my reasoning for the others… And for Evans…he hasnt impressed me yet either, BUT he keeps winning… so you cant really disregard someone who wins…
huertarogerhuerta how can u call chuck liddlle washed up b4 the jackson fight he was still classed as the best fighter ever then he got caught by jackson (not takeing nothing away from jackson) then he had a bad day at the office with keith if they went at it again **** that would be bad for jardine, chuck will be champ this year, as for jardine an rashard please rashard wiould kill jardine
classed as the best fighter ever by the ufc hype machine i didnt buy it then i dont buy it now was he near the top of the division world ranks of course but wit all his outside **** (rehab, entourage, blade the series etc) and how he had faired in his last 2 bouts (rampage and jardine not wandi) my opinion was and still is hes on his way out
Its funny everyone is talking about Jardine, Tito, Griffin, Jackson, Luddell, and Houston. The everyone showed be looking at is Thiago Silva. This guy not only beat the **** out of Houston, he did it slowly. He comes from Chute Boxe camp in Brazil, if you don’t know Chute Boxe in Brazil look them up on the web. And he has a record like 18-0.
Royal A,
I completely agree about Thiago Silva. He just hasn’t been truely tested yet, and there will be plenty of time to find the next contender for the LHtitle. There should be a lot of match ups between now and the title defense of the winner of the Griffin/Rampage fight so we should get a great combo of fights between all of these fighters. I am hopeing that they don’t consider the winner of Liddell vs Shogun the #1 contender cause that would be seriously bent.
I don’t know about that, I did find some info on Thiago. He beat Houston record 8-2, who was the next big thing. And the other two he had in the UFC were not chumps. One of them had a record of 14-2. The other was James Irvin who has a record 13-4. All three of these guys have about 80% 1st round knockout rate. Thiago has 12-0, 10kos, 1sub, 1des and out 8 fights they were 1st round wins.
“If Thiago has a title shot he will win”
But I diffently agree with you about Liddell vs Shogun!
I cant belive tito can drop to 185. Tito already drops 20-25 lbs. I would be unhealthy to drop this much weight. Also his stamina will drop. Sorry huerta it not going to happen. Hendo is much smaller and thats why he can drop. he is a natural 205. Go Hendo. But Sylvia is no joke and it suprises me that people think Nate Marquart is not that good. He is also very good but had a bad night against Sylvia.
wow cant belive u think liddlle is on his way out huerta after his last fight he looked like the chuck that beat randy and tito,
hey scotchydow about the next no1 contender i think it will be the winner of rashad v silva going against the winner of liddlle v shogun then that guy will most likely get a shot, i belive jardine is fighting wandi next and i dont give poor keith a chance in hell looks like the dude wont ever get a shot
Nico thanx for clarifyin i wasnt sure how much he cut to get to 205
johnboy 1st that 2nd fight against tito was bull**** yamasaki f***ed him on that 1 it shouldve went to the 4th (yes tito fan) and as for chuck i said i think he started to turn it around wit the wandi fight but im not sold yet and to ne liddel fans im sry but everyone he beat when he was on his “badest man on the planet” run were people he already beat or fought. randy couture and rampage r the only people chuck fought previously i feel deserved a shot at that belt jeremy horn babalu yes even tito (im his fan but im a realest beatin ken slamcock shouldnt have earned him a shot) none of them deserved the shot they got and it showed in the fight results look wat happened when someone who wasnt goin to b a lamb led to the slaughter fought chuck 1 took his belt the other damaged his rep
Tito will definitly lose. End of storey Machida is one a much farther scale of skill then Lidell or anyones who’s beat tito before. His striking is intense and his BJJ is slicker then elvis’ hair.
I’ll have to take Machida on this one after seeing his last few fights I’ll say by decision. As far as Lesnar goes I think his next fight will be a gimme. Prolly vs some up and comer who has nothing but stand up.
well, im a big fan of lyoto “ryoto” machida “the dragon” he is a terrific fighter he can be a middleweight or a light heavy weight fighter, ihave seen a lot of fights of him in pride, he defeated bj penn, michael mc donald, rich franklin and soon he will take tito ortiz out.
if lyoto would fight as a middleweight he could even beat anderson “skiny ass” silva
everybody is gonna know how good lyoto “the dragon” is……………
there’s a rumor going around that Lesnar may fight Justin McCully. Probably a gimme and then it might not be he is fair to good at bjj. So who knows.
Brock Lesnar is fighting Justin McCully and Brandon Vera is fighting Fabricio Wedum
When do these tickets go on sale and how do you get them…..any inside info?
I read that this will be the last fight for Tito and will be on some show and will get paid top dollars. So it’s up to him if he wants to do his best like he used to and win or walk out the octagon as a loser.
Tito ortiz is goiing to beat his ass that is all to it
