After months of anticipation, both Alistair Overeem and Wladimir Klitschko recently returned to the octagon and ring, respectively. Overeem, the reigning Strikeforce Heavyweight champion, and Klitschko, the WBA, IBF, IBO, and WBO Heavyweight champion, both fought to decisions in their most recent fight.
Overeem took on Fabricio Werdum last month in a rematch of their original matchup in Pride in May 2006. The fight did not live up to the hype of the anticipation, as Werdum repeatedly lay on the mat in hopes of Overeem grappling with jiu jitsu black belt. Ironically, Klitschko faced a similar problem, as his opponent David Haye also went to the mat multiple times during their boxing bout earlier this month.
Following an interview with the Polish website Boxing News, Overeem mentioned that the expectations of him taking on UFC heavyweights in the future is not his only option.
“I’m looking at the UFC or boxing,” Overeem said. “I think it (boxing) matches my personality. I’m always looking for a challenge. That came about in fighting in K-1 and becoming champion there. It’d be cool to go to boxing and beat the main guy there.”
It is rumored that Overeem’s contract with Strikeforce will expire following the conclusion of the Heavyweight Grand Prix.
While Overeem’s desire may be sincere, the chances of this happening are slim due to Overeem’s boxing experience and the expected payout for a contract with the UFC to take on the top heavyweights on that roster.
Overeem will be taking on Antonio Silva in the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix which are set to take place on September 10th. Wladimir Klitschko’s next opponent has yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, Wladimir’s brother, Vitali, is set to face Tomasz Adamek in September. Overeem specifically mentioned taking on the WBC Heavyweight champion.
“Vitali is champion for a reason,” said Overeem. “But I know if you give me good preparation with good sparring partners. I’m sure I could go in and break some bones.”
