Takanori Gomi Signs With World Victory Road
Last month it was reported that lightweight standout Takanori Gomi just may have a future with the UFC after becoming a free agent following Zuffa’s acquisition of Pride FC last year. However, Sherdog is now reporting that Gomi has officially signed a deal with the World Victory Road promotion:
“While the source could not confirm the length of Gomi’s deal with WVR, the deal will see Gomi debut for the promotion on their March 5 Sengoku card at Yoyogi National Gymnasium No. 1….WVR reportedly finalized their deal with the former Shooto and PRIDE champion late last week, but were waiting to announce the acquisition in hopes of announcing Gomi’s March 5 opponent simultaneously.”
Takanori “The Fireball Kid” Gomi, is a former Shooto welterweight champion, and the most recent Pride FC lightweight champion. Gomi also holds notable wins over Jens Pulver, Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett, Ralph Gracie, and Hayato Sakurai.

im a bit gutted that gomi hasnt signed. even tho bj beat him i still think he couldve been a force in the ufc and i always enjoyed watching him fight.
I agree he didn’t sign because he was afraid. Why do these supposedly great fighters sign with small organizations? Because they want to keep winning. I think it was the same with Fedor. The money cannot be better. The exposure can’t be better than the UFC. Gomi is a wuss. He can’t beat UFC guys (BJ Penn and Nick Diaz). I think there are a lot of guys ranked highly that wouldnt do great in the UFC. I wonder how a guy like Gilbert Melendez or Jake Shields would fare against top level guys. I would say all those guys including Gomi could not beat the top 3-5 in their divison. So what’s their solution, sign with an organization with no quality fighters. You can win all the time. You can be their sole star. You can build your resume up even more. I’m disappointed in Gomi.
It is well documented that the ufc underpays their fighters.That is the reason Randy left and why Frank Shamrock refuses to sign with the organization. Maybe this is the real reason why Gomi as well as Fedor signed with other organizations. Simply put they do not want to get screw by the Ufc when they can make more money somewhere else even if it is to a smaller organization.
Thats right Bobby the ufc could very well be in a bad position if big name fighters continue to sign elsewhere. For someone to say an mma fighter is scared thats just stupid. Dana White can’t continue on paying who he wants to make money fighters are getting tired of it and rightfully so. How would you feel if a guy with 1-1 mma record made three times as much as you even when he lost. Way to go Dana King…
