John “Doomsday” Howard Released by the UFC

John HowardFollowing three-straight losses, welterweight John “Doomsday” Howard (14-7) has been released from the UFC. Howard suffered his most recent loss to Matt Brown at UFC on Versus 4 on June 26.

Howard announced the news today on Twitter.

Howard made his Octagon debut at UFC 94 with a split decision over Chris Wilson, starting a four fight win streak that also included wins over Tamdan McCrory, Dennis Hallman, and Daniel Roberts. His last victory, against Roberts at UFC on Versus 1 in March 2010, scored him a highlight finish along with a bonus for “Knockout of the Night”.

However, this was the end of Howard’s success, as he was dominated by Jake Ellenberger in their matchup at UFC on Versus 2 last August. Ellenberger utilized strong ground and pound on Howard, closing Howard’s left eye shut in the process. This forced the doctors to stop the fight in the middle of the third round.

In Howard’s most recent bout, he went up against Matt Brown, a fighter who was looking to recover from a three fight loss streak himself. Neither Brown nor Howard took control of the fight, which saw Brown as the victor in a unanimous decision.

The release of Howard follows the news that The Ultimate Fighter 9 runner-up Andre Winner was also released over the weekend.
