Lyoto Machida won’t be welcoming Chael Sonnen back to the Octagon, as a rumored matchup between the former light heavyweight champion and middleweight contender has been scrapped from the UFC’s fall plans, according to MMAjunkie.
Sonnen and Machida are both still awaiting their next bouts.
When Sonnen (25-11-1) returns it will be the first time in over a year following his suspension for failing a drug test and pleading guilty to money laundering after nearly dethroning middleweight champ Anderson Silva in August only to be submitted in the final round to snap a three-fight win streak.
Meanwhile, Machida (17-2) is on the rise again after rebounding from back-to-back losses with the “Knockout of the Night” of UFC hall of famer Randy Couture at UFC 129 in April.
The UFC’s fall schedule includes UFC 135 on Sept. 24 featuring light heavyweight champ Jon Jones vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, UFC 136 on Oct. 8 with a likely headliner between featherweight champ Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian, UFC 137 on Oct. 29 pitting UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre against former Strikeforce title-holder Nick Diaz, and UFC 138 on Nov. 19 with heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos.
