BJ Penn, Wilson Gouveia, Paul Taylor, and Paul Kelly were all awarded $35,000 post-event bonuses from the UFC.
Penn was awarded “Submission of the Night” by default, posting the only submission victory on the 9-fight card. In the UFC 80 main event “The Prodigy” submitted a bloodied Joe Stevenson with a rear naked choke in the second round to claim the vacant UFC lightweight title.
Gouveia posted a come-from-behind knockout win over Jason Lambert to earn the “Knockout of the Night” award. Lambert appeared to be cruising to an easy victory against Gouveia midway through the second round before Lamber landed a brutal left hook that immediately dropped Lambert. The award was easily the most highly contested on a card that included six total knockout endings.
England natives Kelly and Taylor picked up “Fight of the Night” honors for their fast-paced fight that included several extended standup exchanges. Kelly ultimately won the bout via unanimous decision due his ability to control the fight on the ground though both fighters received bonuses for their efforts.
