Schaub (8-1) knocked out Mirko Cro Cop in March for his fourth-straight win since losing to Roy Nelson in the finals of The Ultimate Fighter 10, while Nogueira (32-6-1) has been sidelined since a Feb. 2010 loss to Cain Velasquez.

Seen this one coming..makes alot sense for both fighters should be a good fight but see big nog taking this by rear naked choke round 3

  • Johntron says:

    KO by brendan schaub

  • jcohl says:

A lot of MMA observers [myself included] feel that BigNog’s best days are behind him, primarily due to what we call PRIDE syndrome.
A lot of MMA observers [myself included] aren’t 100% sold on Brendan Schaub as a major league MMA talent.
A lot should be determined at 134 as this thing is shaping up to be what I call a barometer fight…

  • JK says:

what a punk, tryna go after old men and their legacies…i hope this backfires on him and he gets sub’d

    • jcohl says:

I get what you’re saying, but what was Schaub supposed to do when the UFC offered him the fight?
Waving off the fight not only risks p!ssing off Joe Silva and Dana White, but also maybe gives off the whiff of Schaub fearing BigNog, and that sort of whiff almost NEVER benefits a fighter.

Smart play here is for Schaub to remain humble, show proper respect for BigNog AND confidence in his own abilities, bust his a$$ in camp, and come down to Rio ready to throwdown.
Anything outside of those boundries runs the risk of Schaub looking like a tool, and maybe severely p!ssing off BigNog and BlackHouse…

      • JK says:

he petitioned for it, AND THEN they offered it…if they offered it first i would never have a problem…but hes trying to piggy back his fame off of 2 legends…if thats his prerogative, then ok, but i’m definitely not gaining any respect for him as a fan…he gets KTFO’d by roy, and then he starts beating up on old fighters, it just seems like a b*tch move to me, just my 2 cents

      • jazz says:

        @JK

        Well said dude.

      • chromie says:

Yeah I never really could get behind Schaubb for whatever reason…just one of those things I guess..

Schaubb Struve could be a good fight somewhere down the line…both have been KO’d at the hands of big country.

I’m rooting for big nog here…not sure how I see this fight going down yet though.

    • Advent says:

If Nog doesn’t want to fight younger, hungry opponents, then he should retire. There’s not that many fighters with the legacy and respect that Nog has that he can fight. So that only leaves these young guys.

Schaub is ok, but I foresee him finishing Big Nog. I hope not though.

    • Plinko says:

Ignore the title of “legend” and just look at the fighters as fighters. Does that change the perspective for you? In all honesty, Shaub wanted this fight because he saw that it was an opportune time to fight, with an opponent that complimented him well in his skill set. Many MMA observers, like Jcohl will tell you that BigNog’s best days are behind him and I agree. So, realistically the fight will give Shaub just the appropriate amount of challenge as it will BigNog. So to call Shaub a punk is to say everyone else who has called out a “legend” is a punk. They’re fighters, they’re paid to fight.

    • Five-Alive says:

      @JK

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal that Schaub wants BigNig. They are both Heavyweight UFC fighters. So what if BigNob is older it’s not like there’s a seniors division.

Since BigNog is older than he’s more experienced and he has a great camp with amazing training partners. He’s fighting in his home country which is going to give him lots of motivation with his huge heart, so I don’t see this being a punk move by Schaub and nor should it be an easy bout.

Another thing is he’s not going to get famous for beating BigNog. He’ll get famous if he can consistently win more than lose and do that for a long time in the UFC. Another thing that would help would be finishing a nice amount of his fights in spectacular fashion. Good luck to both fighters and good fight. ;-)

  • Steve_M says:

When Gonzaga stuffed Schaubs takedown attempt at the end of the third round he looked like he was in a world of trouble. Big Nogs days are more or less over I’m just hoping he can get the sub win one more time.

  • Five-Alive says:

A lot of people feel that Schaub is the out right favorite. I’m not to sure about that with BigNog in Brazil. I feel BigNog is going to come out there with a lot of heart, pride and joy and he’ll be tough to stop. I know the crowd is on his side and I think his experience is going to help him shine in Rio. I really like Schaub but this is one tough test for him. Good luck and congrats to the winner. Also, please no one get hurt! ;)

  • Matt says:

Brendan schaub will have to change his nickname to the legend killer should he win this fight

  • Five-Alive says:

If Schaub can take out BigNog than for surly call him the Legend killer. I feel he has a tough test in front of him but if he gets through it on top than give him that nickname and more. Their is also another man that could be called the legend killer…but if you don’t care than just read the last paragraph. ;-)

World #2 Novak Djokovic defeated world #1 Rafael Nadal in the finals of Rome yesterday and beat him in the finals of Madrid last week. Both of those tournaments were on clay and Nadal is the greatest clay player of all time.

Novak Djokovic is still undefeated this year and now he’s at 37-0 and is riding a 39 match winning streak. He has won 7 titles this year, 1 being a major(Australian Open), 4 being ATP 1000 masters series’(BNP Paribas Open, Sonny Ericsson Open, Mutua Madrid Open, Internazionali BNL d’Italia), and 2 ATP 250′s(Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and Serbia Open 2011).

The next tournament is aaround a week from now and it’s the 2nd major of the year, The French Open. It’s also known as Roland Garros and it’s played on clay. If Novak Djokovic wants to have the biggest winning streak to start out the season than he has to at least make it to the semi-finals of the French to tie it or the Finals to beat it. The man that holds the biggest winning streak is the American John McEnroe at 42-0 in 1984. One more thing about the Serbian Novak Djokovic (a.k.a Nole) is he’s the first man ever to beat Nadal in 4 straight finals. ;-)

Last of all (and one of the main reasons I posted this) I’ve been hearing from a large amount of people that Tennis is the closest sport to a combat sport. Do any of you agree that tennis is somewhat in a way like MMA? I know that intelligent people comment on this site and I’d love to hear their opinion.

    • mach2 says:

We are MMA fans here, I think you should go to another forum…

      • Five-Alive says:

I’m a MMA fan as well. I apologize to you and everyone else who dislikes this comment.

    • Newfie says:

“large amount of people that Tennis is the closest sport to a combat sport”

How anyone thinks tennis is even remotely close to mma is completely beyond me. I don’t remember seeing a brawl after a tennis match, I’m sure it has happened but not after every match. (I don’t watch tennis so humour me) Tennis is 2 guys batting a ball back and forth, with a very defined point system to determine a winner. MMA is 2 guys trying to punch, kick, or submit each other, with a scoring system which involves judges using their own opinions to score the fight should it go to the cards. I don’t see the similarities, except maybe that both are one on one sports, but thats it.

My oppologies Mods, completely off topic but I wanted to reply to his question.

      • bsbiz says:

The mental aspect of thinking ahead two or three moves, varieties of styles… It sort of works. A little fuzzy, but I see the connection.

    • jcohl says:

Never really gave tennis much thought as a “combat sport”.
In my part of the country its more of a women’s sport, but thats probably just a real provincial POV.
Personally I see American football being the closest team sport to MMA, primarily because of the intentional violent collisions and frequent line grappling.
Every other major non-combat sport discourages violent confrontations, although with hockey and lacrosse thats questionable ;-)

      • bsbiz says:

Except that American Throwball is the epitome of team sport whereas tennis is the epitome of zero-sum one on one competition.

      • jcohl says:

        @bsbiz
        “epitome”?!
        “zero sum?!”
Hold on a sec, let me get my chef-to-science geek dictionary so I know what the He11 you’re talking about…
        ;-)

      • bsbiz says:

“epitome” : a person or thing that is typical of or possesses to a high degree the features of a whole class.

“zero-sum” : One can not succeed unless at the expense of someone else.

      • Mikemac says:

        I’m positive hockey encourages it.

    • Five-Alive says:

Well skdrcr gives a good quick and to the point answer and bsbiz really understands it. I think that not everyone but that most people would have to be a fan of tennis to see the similarities.

I’ve already heard a lot of tennis players and commentators say how they feel tennis is the closest sport to a combat sport like MMA. They feel their sport is always changing and and getting tougher. That you have to have a very well rounded game and be in unbelievable shape physically and mentally to compete with the top guns.

The way a fighters mind is always thinking is how a tennis players mind is thinking. It’s a war when you step on court, just like when you step into the cage or ring.

Another thing is Men’s tennis is more competitive and explosive than women’s tennis, but they’re both still exciting to watch. ;-)

  • Matt says:

Novak is playing amazing at the moment and for him to beat nadal on clay twice gives the spaniard something to worry about ahead of Roland garros

    • Five-Alive says:

I agree. I would like to see a Nadal/Djokovic finals. I’m a big fan of Novak Djokovic so I’d love to see him win it. My two favorite sports stars are Novak Djokovic and Georges St-Pierre.
      Nole and GSP. ;-)

  • skdrcr says:

What they have in commin is that they’re both individual sports where not only the physical aspect but mental aspect both play a big role in the matchup. Ivan Lendl would have something to say about your comment on Nadal being the greatest clay court player of all time as well. As far a Schaub and Big nog goes, Nog should clinch with him and pull guard if you ask me. I myself would like to see Schaub try to stand and bang with Barry. Granted he beat Cro Cop who subbed Barry, Barry also broke his hand and foot early in that fight.

    • Five-Alive says:

I agree that Bjorn Borg would disagree. He was amazing on clay himself. I should of said Rafael Nadal is controversially the best clay player of all time. ;-)

A match-up between Schaub vs. Barry interests me whether schaub beats BigNog or not. I’m not to sure if they would end up standing the whole time. Schaub is becoming more of a well rounded mixed martial artist and I could see him taking the fight to the ground.

I do think that Schaub would beat BigNog every else but I’m don’t know if he can do it in Brazil. BigNog has a BigHeart and it’s going to be huge in Rio. It should be a very interesting bout.

      • jcohl says:

So any of you think over at tennisfrenZy.com they’re discussing MMA?
        ;-)

      • Five-Alive says:

        lol that’s a good one. ;-)

I bet you never thought you would see people bring up tennis here at the frenZy.

So does all this talk about tennis makes you want to watch it?

I actually think you’d enjoy the sport if you watched it. If you gave it some time I think it would grow on you. ;-)

You’d probably have to watch it for a little while to see the similarities between Tennis and MMA. The French Open starts in a week, what a perfect time to start. ;-)

      • jcohl says:

        @five-alive
I’ve actually watched some tennis before.
        Wimbledon 2006.
Roger Federer won the singles championship and the Bryan twins out of California won the doubles.
At the time I was working at a hotel restaurant near Dover in England, and it was all-tennis, all the time on the many TVs located throughout the hotel’s bar, restaurant, etc.
Not exactly my “cup of tea”, as the Brits say, but I can understand how the sport appeals to many, especially outside the US…

  • skdrcr says:

Whoops, meant to say Bjorn Borg not Ivan Lendl. :P

  • corey says:

rough fight back for Big Nog. One would think that would give him an “easy win” since he is fighting in Brazil.

  • willyt says:

2 bad that bignog is gonna get ktfo in rio
