Hey Kris, thanks for sharing this video. And GSP all the way :-)
This video really makes GSP look like he’s on a whole ‘nother level. I mean, come on… he has a former olympic boxer complimenting him on his boxing. He’s quickly taken up gymnastics? WTF? who is this guy? That’s right: we are witnessing something truly special.
Then there’s Jake Shields from the mountains of Cawleefowneeyah. He is being sold as a worthy opponent, and believes he’s the best Jake Shields he’s ever been. We have Greatness versus Very Good-ness in this fight, or at least that’s what it seems like. But on fight day, maybe, just maybe both fighters will have elevated their game to Godlike versus Greatness. In any case, the equation works out in favor of GSP, gymnast.
Its possible that we may be at the point post-129 where we start discussing who is the best fighter that GSP has ever beaten…
All GSP has to do is keep a distance to avoid take downs. Ppl will b1tch about not finishing the fight but it’s not something GSP can pull that ezly.
I think GSP will win this fight, but it’ll take a few rounds to tire Shields out. Probably a 5 round unanimous decision. But I was wondering why Shields, who’s competed at both WW and MW, decided not to go after Anderson Silva instead? If he’s really as good as he says he is, it’d be epic to hold both the WW and MW UFC belts.
I was going to make this fight GSP’s LAST chance to finish a fight. Instead, I’m tired of the apologies. I’m tired of him not finishing fights. I’m really not looking forward to him stuffing Shield’s take downs and jabbing him for 5 rounds.
Don’t take me wrong. There is no one classier, more capable, or more elite than GSP. He amazes me with all that he does…outside the octagon. He finishes a fight or two, he raises right back up to GOD status and I can root for him again. As of now, I see him as a belt defender; not as a fighter bringing it to his opponent.
That being said, for Shield’s to actually win, he has to close the distance, take GSP down, and do tremendously more punishment than his initial UFC fight. No small order for Mr Shields.
Sheilds wasn’t close to finishing Kampmann, and did practically no damage even in the first round which he ‘controlled’. And he gassed big time in the 3rd round. While his grappling is amazing he didn’t do any damage or get close to a sub really. 5 rounds with GSP – I’d be very surprised.
I think anyone presuming GSP is simply going to walk over Jake Shields are sorely mistaken.
This is a dude who took a clean, crisp bomb from Dan Henderson at the outset of their fight and recovered fully going on to completely dominate Hendo via grappling, mounting him with ease, (and Dan’s an Olympic caliber wrestler).
Also, let’s not forget that Shield’s first fight in the UFC / “Big Show” (Vs. Martin Kampmann) was his first fight dropping down to Welterweight in over two years. I just don’t see that particular performance as indicating much of ANYTHING in terms of his upcoming war with GSP.
IMO, this is going to be a very competitive fight. If Shields can get on top of St. Pierre, there could be a ton us GSP fans going home devastated the night of April 30th.
