Bellator 41 Results: Warren Escapes Defeat, Makovsky Dominant, Straus, and Freire Advance

Despite temperatures reaching 99 degrees in Yuma, Arizona, Bellator 41 took place outdoors Saturday night. Bellator champions, Joe Warren and Zach Makovsky, were victorious in their respective non-title super fights. Also on the card, the season four featherweight tournament final was set with Patricio Freire and Daniel Straus advancing.

In the non-title main event between Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren and Marcos Galvao, Warren ended up in trouble early and often with missed throws and big knees from Galvao in the first two rounds. Warren finally managed to control the two-time BJJ world champion on the ground throughout the third round. Despite two very shaky rounds for the former Greco-Roman world champion, Warren was awarded a shocking unanimous decision.

In the other non-title super fight, Bellator bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky put on a dominant performance against Chad Robichaux. Robichaux secured a weak guillotine attempt early in the fight but once Makovsky worked free, it was all Makovsky. Makovsky utilized solid striking and looked to pass directly off each takedown. After multiple submission attempts, Makovsky finished off Robichaux with strikes from back mount in the third.

In the first featherweight semifinal, Daniel Straus utilized strong throws and takedowns to finally ground a very game Kenny Foster and lock in a guillotine choke in round three. Foster showed great takedown defense early until Straus started setting up his takedowns with hard strikes. In the third, Straus ended up on top after an impressive scramble and locked up a D’arce choke. Straus looked content to ride out the round in that position until Foster attempted to counter and Straus transitioned beautifully into a guillotine choke. With the win over Foster, Straus became the first finalist in the Bellator season four featherweight tournament.

In the second semifinal, Patricio Freire defeated Wilson Reis in a rematch of last year’s semifinal. Freire was the most accurate striker through out the bout, while Reis controlled most of the grappling. With the fight likely tied heading into the third, Freire turned up the intensity and picked apart the wild swinging Reis before knocking him out against the cage. Patricio will face Daniel Straus in the final with the winner having a shot at Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren.

“Warren was awarded a shocking unanimous decision”…i agree it was a shock, i had Galvao winning rounds one and two. One judge had it 30-27, i just don’t understand how someone could see something so differently than me.
I know the old adage “never leave it in the hands of the judges” but to be reasonable it’s going to happen, top tier fights include top tier fighters and sometimes very little separates them…it must be very frustrating to have all of your efforts undermined by what i can only determine as ignorance.

I did not expect the 30-27 score card either but I can understand the 29-28′s and I would not classify this decision as shocking

The knee’s that Galvao landed seemed to do zero damage to Warren and the shots that Warren landed did inflict damage..Warren’s superior gas tank, pressing the action & late rd takedowns won him the fight

Joe Warren looks is a slow starter but he will be tough out for anyone on the Bellator roster (especially in a 5 rd fight)

Definitely time for Zach Makovsky’s name to start cropping up in 135 discussions.
Sure, the guy needs to polish his striking, but his ground game and cardio are not to be doubted.
Would like to see what he could do rolling in a better fightcamp and with top shelf training partners…

“We’re out here on the desert, came out here to look for someone that could beat me and we don’t see anybody out here man…” Joe Warren

    The guy talks like sonnen…

Sonnen could actually learn a thing or two about sh!t-talking and such from Joe Warren.
If you care to, hit up the InterWeb to unearth some of his previous “gems” such as, “I’ma slam him so hard it’ll change his gender” and “if he hit any softer he’d p!ss sitting down”…
