UFC 82: Jon Fitch vs. Akihiro Gono
MMAWeekly is reporting that UFC welterweight Jon Fitch has signed a bout agreement to take on Akihiro Gono at UFC 82, which will be taking place on March 1st in Columbus, Ohio. Although Gono has not officially signed his fight contract, it is reported that he has verbally accepted the match after originally turning it down. Jon Fitch (15-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) ) is becoming quite the standout within the welterweight landscape, with his most recent win over Diego Sanchez at UFC 76. Previously Fitch has amassed victories over the likes of Thiago Alves, Josh Burkman and Shonie Carter, and is on an almost unheard of 15 fight winning streak since 2002. Fitch is also currently ranked the number 4 welterweight in the world by MMAweekly. Akihiro Gono (28-7 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is a veteran of Pride FC, Pancrase and Shooto, and has notable wins over Yuki Kondo, Ivan Salaverry and most recently Tamden McCrory at UFC 78. Gono has also fought and lost to such fighters as Matt Hughes, Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
With Fitch-Gono being almost a done deal, it would appear that Karo Pariysan has gotten his wish so to speak, since he reportedly preferred an “easier” fight against someone not as strong as Jon Fitch, so that he could have a smoother road to a title shot. Things could come back to bite Karo in the rear however when both Fitch and Karo win their bouts (which I’m assuming they will) and then get pit against each other to see who is the number one welterweight contender.

this will be a good fight. fitch is heading towards a shot at title but gono is a tough guy so its an interesting fight.i hope fitch keeps winning then he may get karo before a title shot.
wow this is a good fight gono is pretty good this could be a upset as well
i’m not sure how he’s ranked #4 in the world, but I do like Fitch. I’m glad this article suggests that he’s got at least 2 bouts before deserving a title shot. karo’s a dumbass if he really said he’s trying to duck Fitch. that’s a surefire way to either not get a title shot or to make sure you have to fight fitch.
if i wa fitch ide be pritty pissed off if i dint get a title shot if i won my next fight, i mean this guy has beat everyone the ufc has put in front of him, plus karo who most people think should have the next shot is running scared, fitch is a little animal an ide like to see him fight gsp after he wins back the title, im guna put my cards on the table right now an say fitch will beat gsp!!! anyone with me on this?
I like Jon Fitch, he’s a hell of a fighter and will win his fight against Gono. I’d like to see him fight Nick Diaz, that would be an interesting fight. As far as him beating GSP, I don’t think so, GSP has too much talent and athleticism to let that happen. Yet, he got beat by Serra, so you never know?
I don’t understand why they have marijuana on the list for performance enhancing substances. Pot doesn’t help with performance, it messes it up. What someone does in their spare time is no one’s business, espaecially if it’s not hurting anyone. Nick Diaz was screwed by a hipocritical system, that has nothing to do with performance enhancement or health issues.
im sorry fitch is a good fighter but gsp can not be stopped the only way he will lose is if he beats himself THE MOST DOMINATE FIGHTER POUND FOR POUND!
i dont think fitch will beat gsp.hes good but gsp is the man.would be good fight though and everyone has a shot once the fight starts.
GSP would lose to Fitch…..my opinion only. Fitch is a monster at WW.
If that is true what Karo said then I hope he loses his next fight. What a little b****. Fitch Vs. GSP would be an awesome fight. I’d definately be pulling for the upset even though I like GSP I have to go with my fellow wrestler here! It’s about time FITCH gets a title shot!
Sure feed GSP another wrestler and he will take him apart. Story is out of Greg Jackson camp that Rashad Evans, a standout colliegate wrestler, cannot take GSP down but GSP can take him down at will. Rashad is as big or bigger than Fitch.
Thumper, that’s awesome if its true, but where in the world did you hear that?
