UFC on Versus 3 Medical Suspensions: Sanchez, Kampmann Among Five Suspended

CB DollawayMedical suspensions have been handed down from Thursday’s UFC on Versus 3 event in Louisville, with headliners Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann sidelined indefinitely.

Sanchez edged Kampmann in a three-round “Fight of the Night” that left both fighters bloodied and bruised.

Sanchez must have his left orbital cleared before returning to the Octagon, while Kampmann must have his right hand cleared, which he’s said is swollen but not broken.

CB Dollaway, Thiago Tavares, and Todd Brown were also suspended 60 days after suffering knockout losses at the event.

Evey article I read on this fight gets me a little p*ssed off. Kampmann has now lost too in a row, one of which he definitely won and many people gave him the Shields fight as well. Bad judging is seriously screwing with these guys careers.

    • chromie says:

All I’d say to that is judges will be scrutinized for nearly every decision they make. Fighters can nulify this by not letting it get to a judges decision.

If Kampmann won, there’d be as many fans complaining about Kampmann winning.

I was really surprised to see Diego didn’t have a jaw injury, the way his jaw seemed to be hanging. I guess it was just a badly swollen lip or something.
Glad to hear kampmann’s hand isn’t broken.
hope everybody heals fast and good.

  • bb says:

yes it sucks about the judging.. but I thought sanchez won 2 and 3.. Its tough when there is no clear winner, maybe it should be 5 rounds all the time?

  • jcohl says:

Everything connected to this sport is on a hyper-evolutionary track.
Everything…that is…except the abilties of the men scoring the fights.
Same mindset, same knowledge base, same inconsistencies.
As the fighters get better the judges in comparison get worse.
Until we get new judges, and or a better scoring system, look for this problem of controvertial decisions to only get worse, not better…

  • Da prince says:

Kampmann did win that fight he was robbed they gave the fight to Sanchez because he showed reckless courage and heart. That’s bullshit!! Can anyone look at that fight and say Diego won all three rounds?! Look at his effin face people. Tell me Kampmann didn’t land some effective punches.
Kampmann was robbed because he didnt have to show heart because he was licking Diego’s ass.
Give Diego the second but Kampmann won that fight

    • dbiz says:

He didn’t have to win all three rounds. Diego clearly won the second and it the third was close…until Kampmann screwed his hand and stopped fighting for the final minute. That is what cost him the fight. Not the judges.

  • Da prince says:

LoL I mean Kicking Diego’s ass. Geez

  • Steve_M says:

Licking aside, People seem to acknowledge the one single takedown Diego got but seem oblivious to the other 14 failed takedown attempts.

    • dbiz says:

14 failed attempts still gives Diego the edge on aggression and octagon control. Add in harder shots and Kampmann doing NOTHING the final minute-ish and you have a loss.

    • chromie says:

15 attempts-kampmann’s 0…all I get from that is Diego attempting OFFENSE!
If ALL that happens in the entire fight, no strikes, no kicks, NOTHING but TD attempts, even with all of them failing, you still have to award the AGGRESSOR! NOTHING can come from defense alone, never has never will. That is why Diego was in the judges eyes rewarded. Especially under ten point must system. Defense, successful or not, simply cannot be rewarded.

And to people suggesting a no fail scoring system…which do you suggest, cause all I’ve heard so far is alot ifs ands or buts. No substance, no suggestions. And “better scoring system” just doesn’t cut it.

Should we maybe poll ufc fighters, past and present via TWITTER who they think won the fight, award a winner that way? They don’t have a “vested interests”, right? Maybe we should get one of those “applause-o-meters”… let the fans cheer the loudest for who they think should win…or maybe we could somehow measure how much blood each fighter lost, then determine a winner by blood loss. Or maybe since dana’s opinion is so important, maybe we should just let him decide, Rogan too??? Maybe we can forget judges all together and just use compubox!?!? first guy to 1000 jabs wins? Or how about fight metric. That’s fail-proof, right? There’s gotta be more!?

What a shame that we got to witness a once a year, if not more fight, where each guy left everything they had in the cage. Putting on a show for the FANS, the same FANS that are calling this bull$hit, like somehow they got screwed out of a win themselves. No, no one got screwed here. If anything it’s the winner of this fight getting screwed. You’d think FANS would be appreciative of what these two guys did for you, instead Diego must be made to feel like he somehow owes something back to all of you. Like he should feel sorry for winning. and poor Kampmann, look at how much blood diego lost, look how many punches he threw…No, Diego went out there and TOOK that win, That’s how I saw it. You can say my opimion doesn’t matter because I’m a diego fan all you want. trust me, I’m smarter then that. I will root for fighters till I am no longer a fan of this sport. But I will not let that get in the way of how I witness, interpret and comprehend a fight. Martin did not do enough to win that fight. Simple. So you can call it bullshit all you want, snivel about the decision all you want but until you come up with a better suggestion as to decide THAT close of a fight! maybe you should just take another look at the fight, take it for what it is, appreciate it, and thank these guys for giving you something you didn’t have before.

  • chris c says:

Assuming any judge awarded that fight to sanchez because of his third round takedown is as absurd as giving the fight to kampmann because diego was bloodier. Experienced fighters tend to start bleeding the first time they receive a dirty look. Im tired of hearing the theory that Diego lost because his face was messier than kampmanns. Guys like sanchez, Guida and Nick Diaz are typically bloody messes at the end of all of their fights because of their expieriance and extensive scar tissue. Watch the fight again objectively and if you still think diego didnt do enough to win that fight in the 2nd and 3rd rnds. then you have no idea what you’re talking about.

  • Mickey says:

What is the UFC fights judged on.

Striking: Diego was not as clean of a striker but did land heavy hits and had Kampman hurt twice. Lets give this to Kampman anyway.

Grappling: There was very little grappling but the one take down goes to Diego. Lets call this a tie anyway.

Octagon Control: Kampman was backing up the entire time and Diego defiantly dictated where the fight was. Including the one takedown. This has to go to Diego.

Aggression: Diego was the aggressor and turned the fight into a brawl. This has to go to Diego.

Like it or not these four things are what the Judges are asked to judge and give the fighter that expresses the most of those four things the round.

It is clear based on this Judging Criteria that the correct decision was made. Some people look at Diego Face and think he had to loose but as you can see there is not criteria to judge on appearance. Or they like to follow Joe Rogan like he is always right. Joe is a commentator not a Judge and needs to keep his opinion on who won private.

Diego won the fight and the correct decision was handed out plain and simple. That is why Dana is not complaining.

    • Steve_M says:

Fight metric scored the fight for Kampmann who according to the numbers had the far superior number of strikes and as for the grappling, anyone can attempt a take down, if you fail to do anything with that attempt the you lose the grappling exchange. Dana white called the fight for Kampmann and so did Joe Rogan. The fans at the arena booed the decision because they could clearly see it was bull sh*t.

      • chris c says:

Steve M. Dana White scored the fight for sanchez giving him rnds 2 and 3. Joe Rogan scored the fight for kampmann

    • jcohl says:

      Lets be clear here:
Dana White was happy with the decision because the more promotable fighter won. If it had gone the other way we would already have a thread going about the immediately-ordered rematch.
When DW dislikes a result, he publicly disses it and orders a rematch as soon as possible, or simply bypasses the decision and promotes the loser as he sees fit.
Check out DW’s comments after Fitch-Penn, or how DW reacted after Rua-Machida 1.
All the SAC guys do is score the fight, and about half the time they can’t even get that right.
Its Dana White who determines who fights who, and where, and when.

      PROMOTABILITY.
At the end of the day THATS the meausring stick in the UFC, so lets not forget that when we discuss DW’s POV on a fight decision…

  • Advent says:

To be fair, Rogan is a better judge of MMA than the judges they have. He obviously trains and knows what to look for. That being said, he’s watching the fight for a different reason… to commentate. Maybe he has to focus on other certain aspects, because I believe Diego stole the fight. So i dont agree with him there, but he’s pretty knowledgeable.

Anyway, I like the idea of a half point scoring system. Gives the judges more leeway if they think a round was close. That’s just me though.
