BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch UFC 127 Winner Will Be Top Welterweight Contender

BJ PennThe winner of UFC 127’s main event between BJ Penn and Jon Fitch will be the top contender at 170-pounds and in line for a title shot after champion Georges St-Pierre faces Jake Shields at April’s UFC 129.

UFC President Dana White made the announcement during a Tuesday media call to promote the Feb. 27 event in Sydney, Australia, which airs on pay-per-view in the U.S. on Feb. 26 in its regular time slot due to the time difference.

Penn (16-7-1) returned to 170-pounds with a 21-second knockout of Matt Hughes in November after losing the lightweight title and an immediate rematch to Frankie Edgar earlier in the year, while Fitch (23-3) has returned to title contention with five-straight wins including a unanimous decision over Thiago Alves in August.

During the call, White also confirmed plans to debut the first international edition of The Ultimate Fighter in 2011 featuring fighters from the Philippines, with U.K. and Canadian versions also in the works.
