I just hope that Jake Shields doesn’t get shelved by GSP like Josh Koscheck did…
But man, that was some poetic justice. I loved it.
Why do I get that nagging feeling this will go the full 5 rounds, GSP dominating but not finishing ? Probably because he will be in Canada so no chance of him taking any risks as long as he gets in the win column.
Still very excited by it though !
You are so so so on point with that .now I have no comment, other than saying -great call
I’m a bit surprised Randy’s not on the poster for marketing purposes…though, a card in Canada with GSP headlining / mug on a poster is really all you need to fill something as huge as the Rogers Centre.
Consider that the UFC hype machine needs to p!mp Jose Aldo, a relative UFC newcomer a LOT more than they do Randy Couture, a hall of Famer.
Plus Hominick is Canadian, so, y’know…
;-)
Pretty much, it’s just the first time I can think of Randy not being on the poster art for any card he’s fought in…feels odd.
They don’t wanna do anything to steal gsp’s thunder ,not while he’s the golden boy
badasss poster
that is badass.
if they can only put 4 guys on the poster, obviously it’s going to be the two title holders and their opponents…
I’m actually REALLY looking forward to aldo-hominick fight. Aldo is no nonsense and Hominick likes to come forward…nice fight, for sure. I’ll be rooting hard for hominick. Interesting to see how Aldo will perform after a considerable layoff.
The real main event is the jose aldo/mark hominick fight. The fight between GSP and jake sheilds is weak. I don’t care what Dana says or shields, it’s going to be complete domination by GSP. BTW Jake Shields is one of the most boring fighters out there.
Both times Jake fought on CBS for free I ended up changing the channel half way through. I guess you could say the only time I watch a full JS fight is when I have payed for it. So yeah, he’s boring.
I know most people like to see fights end before the judges’ decision. Fighter’s knocking their opponents out, or submitting them, but really I love to see any fight any day, which brings me to the point that Georges might be fighting safe, but he is a very smart, technically-strategic fighter, and I like watching him fight, just as other fighters that do not finish fights.
Onto the main event, I do not believe Jake Shields has any chance to win. Georges is h<ll of a wrestler, being strong and fighting smart, like he always does, he can disable Jake's BJJ and give him a very long night.
I agree Georges has been fighting somewhat safe but fighters approach bouts very differently according to what they need to achieve. When GSP was gunning for the belt he was nuch more aggressive looking to take the belt rather than retain, the same could be said for Silva.
It’s good for a fighter to lose every so often and come back stronger and more focused on finishing.
It is tempting to call the GSP victory by decision, because that’s what we have become accustomed to, but I really do see GSP finishing him inside 3-4 rounds. Jake’s stand-up (both offensively and defensively) is so bad, that I really can’t see the pin-point striking of GSP not putting him down hard and often. Heck, if Kamppman had higher ‘fighter intelligence’, this fight wouldn’t even be happening.
There’s no way that the UFC will convince me that this is a threatening match-up for GSP on his home soil.
ONLY way this fight is competetive is if Shields comes into the fight not drawn out. period. Even then he’s got cards stacked against him (no pun intended)
Sheilds has like velcro on his hands or soemthing. When he gets those mits on someone, they usually always end up on their back. Even when he was on his back ‘gainst Kampmann he rolled Martin over soooo easily. I can appreciate the skill it takes to do that and make it look so easy.
BJ Penn had elite world class BJJ too….looked what happend to BJ. I agree that Sheilds is not a very exciting fighter but he’s very technical.
GSP will do to Jake Shields what he has done to his last several opponents, and beat them where they aren’t strong.
Or what military historians used to call applying the spearpoint to the weak point.
MMA observers just LOVE to talk about a specific GSP fightplan.
About time they dialed into the fact that GSP doesn’t have specific fightplans. Its the same fightplan tailored to different opponents.
You don’t need to be a Gracie to figure that out.
Consider that in the last 40 months or so:
Strikers Thiago Alves and Dan Hardy spent more time on their backs than a hooker trying to make her rent. And they lost.
Wrestlers like Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch got bloodied and brutalized and in Koscheck’s case, broken. And they lost.
Smaller guys like BJ Penn and Matt Serra were overwhelmed by GSP physically. And they lost.
Old school Matt Hughes got blinded by GSP’s cutting edge MMA “science” in under 10 minutes.
And yeah, Hall of Fame membership notwithstanding, he lost too.
So what does Jake Shields bring to the cage at 129?
Nothing that GSP hasn’t seen before.
Shields is a good wrestler and good submission fighter, no denying it.
That means he’s going to be facing so many strikes on 30 April that he’ll think he is in the Octagon with an angry labor union.
Assuming Shields survives the 25 minutes of multiple knees in the clinch, rhythm-disrupting kicks, pinpoint jabs, and shins to the chin, he’ll leave the Octagon looking like the victim of a shark attack, and be on the shelf for months while something badly broken heals.
No disrespect intended, but Jake Shields is out of his league.
And witg few exceptions we all know it…
ya getting it twisted though gsp is a great fighter as well as shields and when it comes down to it its gonna be about whoever is more prepared mentally… gsp needs to stay focused and shields cant be to eiger. the fight is on rush’s soil and shields cant let that get to him and rush needs to forget about his soil when he gets in there and focus on the task at hand.
