Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Continues on April 9, Likely in Japan

Alistair OvereemThe second quarterfinal event of Strikeforce’s heavyweight grand prix is scheduled for April 9 and will likely take place in Japan, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told ESPN’s Josh Gross on Thursday.

The event features Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers opening round matchups, as well as the return of lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez, who is rumored to face Tatsuya Kawajiri next.

According to the report, Coker will soon meet with DREAM officials to discuss details for the event, though the U.S., Canada, and Brazil also remain options.

The heavyweight grand prix kicks off on Feb. 12 in East Rutherford, New Jersey with Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Andrei Arlovski vs. Sergei Kharitonov on Showtime, which will also air the April 9 card.
