After undergoing back surgery in December, heavyweight Cheick Kongo is looking to return to UFC action in June, which would coincide with the expected return of recent heavyweight challenger Shane Carwin.
MMAFighting reports that a source close to Kongo confirmed the French fighter’s desire to return to the Octagon in early summer, possibly at UFC 131 which is expected to be headlined by Brock Lesnar vs Junior dos Santos.
Carwin, also coming off back surgery, is expected to return at UFC 131 as well.
A match up between the two seems to make the most sense with most of the other top contenders in the division already tied up with upcoming fights.
Kongo last competed at UFC 120 against Travis Browne in a bout that ended in a draw. Kongo has struggled against top competition in recent years with his only wins since 2008 coming against Dan Evensen, Mostapha Al Turk, Antoni Hardonk, and Paul Buentello.
Carwin hasn’t competed since UFC 116 last July when he was defeated by Brock Lesnar in a heavyweight title bout. Carwin went 12-0 previous to the loss including wins against Frank Mir and Gabriel Gonzaga.
