Huerta To Take 6-8 Months Off

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Dec 14, 2007 at 10:53 am ET14 Comments

After a blistering 2007 in which Roger Huerta posted a 5-0 record, including a win last weekend over Clay Guida in The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale main event, the rising lightweight contender will not be back until the middle of 2008 according to an interview with Huerta at MMA Weekly:

“I’m not fighting for 6, 7, 8 months. I did everything I could this year, I tried to keep helping promote the sport, keep making it grow, but I think I didn’t get a lot of R&R. I trained through Thanksgiving for this fight, I didn’t even go home to Texas to spend time with my family.

I think I’m going to take some time off. You know the truth is I need to finish school too. I fought 5 times this year and I think that’s the most anybody’s ever done in the UFC and I think I’m going to take some time off.”

Good for Huerta, He needs sometime off…And a Huerta v Sanchez would be a great fight in Mexico City

  • holy_dave says:

“Some” time, I agree, but 6-8 months. I thought you have to be WW champ to take off that much time.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

The 6-8 months will have him set up to face the winner of Sherk vs Penn. I dont like having one of the most exciting LW not fighting for awhile but if the man needs a break let him have it.

    goodbye startum, hello ring-rust

  • Red says:

I think he deserves the time off. Huerta pretty much did all he could do for 2007 and I think 2008 will be a good year for him as well. He might contend for a title as soon as early 2009.

My hat is off to him, and I hope he finishes school.

  • scotchydow says:

I do like the idea of him and Diego facing each other in Mexico. UFC 87-Mexicali Mayham?

  • FixXeR says:

I hope his return is a good one. Hope he fights some real fighters when he gets back. Guida is a tough dude…but other than that…cmon.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

How are you going to say that aside from Guida he was fighting nobodys? Doug Evans was undefeated before he ran into Huerta. Alberto Crane undefeated til Huerta. John Halverson is a veteran fighter that trains with the MFS. The only fight that wasnt stiff lightweight competition was Leonard Garcia and thats only because Garcia is a featherweight and that fight still turned out to be amazing.

  • FixXeR says:

They make Huerta out to be a monster, and he has faced some mediocre opponents. Put him in against Penn, Stevenson, Sherk…basically some fighters that have proven themselves. The fighters that Roger has fought in the past are not bad fighters by any means, they are just not in the same class of fighters as the above mentioned. Im not slammin Huerta…I just want to see him fight some tougher opponents. I guess what I meant by my statement was, the UFC/media, make him out to be some kind of monster and a very popular fighter. They need to pair him up with another popular fighter that is a proven fighter.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

Ill agree with you on that. They were mediocre fighters(even though 2 of them were undefeated before fighting Huerta) but certainly not nobodies. And Ill agree in 08 he should fight some big names like a Penn or Stevenson or Sherk. But whats this talk of Diego vs Huerta? Is Diego dropping down and I wasnt informed? That would be cool if Diego is done having “nightmares” about Fitch.

  • Vampslayr says:

I don’t blame him for taking a break. Finishing school sends a positive message and is a good image for the UFC to promote (see Penn, Sherk, War Machine, etc…).

  • Kirsten says:

Huerta’s an awesome figher, very entertaining to watch. Good for him though that hes taking time off, especially if its for school and to be able to spend time with his family and such. But I will miss watching his fights.Hope he comes back just as strong, if not stronger

  • Thumper says:

I would like to see Huerta and Melvin G go at it; that would be a really good fight.
