The return of former top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko against fellow contender Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva has been pushed back to February at the earliest just one day after it appeared likely for Strikeforce’s Jan. 29 event, Sherdog reports.
Emelianenko appeared to have finalized his long-awaited contract extension with the promotion to clear way for his return from an upset to Fabricio Werdum in June, but they haven’t yet reached a deal.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told Sherdog he hoped to have Emelianenko challenge heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem in January, but that fight won’t happen and Silva could also move on a new opponent if Emelianenko doesn’t reach a new deal soon.
The Jan. 29 Showtime-televised event is still expected to featured welterweight champ Nick Diaz along with a rubber match between middleweight contenders Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Tim Kennedy.
